Mrs. Hoots, a first year educator and Art teacher at WEST Prep, has been collaboratively planning with many different departments on campus to infuse art and content across our STEAM campus. Showcased here is a collaboration between the African American Studies and the Literacy Committee. Through the African American Studies lens, they read about coded quilts and their use in helping escaped slaves navigate the Underground Railroad. Dr. Karen Crocco, SLPS Instructional Specialist for Visual and Performing Arts, was selected to present a session at the Carnegie Hall Summer Music Educator Workshop in New York City. Music educators from across the country came to Carnegie Hall to expand the impact of their work with young musicians. Dr. Crocco’s standing-room-only workshop entitled “Beginning with the End in Mind: Intention in Rehearsal and Assessment” focused on teacher learning to reinvigorate student creativity and musicianship, building a community of peers, and investing in one’s own artistry through creative activities and music-making ensembles. Lincoln Park Academy sent three high school teams to this year’s Odyssey of the Mind state competition. Odyssey of the Mind, often referred to as OM (although the official acronym is OotM), is a creative problem-solving competition involving students from kindergarten through college. Team members work together at length to solve a predefined problem (the long term problem) and present their solution to the problem at a competition. They must also generate spontaneous solutions to a problem they have not seen before in the spontaneous competition. The 5th graders at Rivers Edge Elementary were honored to have Cris Martinez of Channel 25 News Weather Team host his Weather School on Wednesday, December 3. He used our very own students to explain how a tornado works and what happens when a cold and warm front collide. Our 5th graders welcomed Mr. Martinez with a song they had written about hurricanes.

Recently at St. Lucie West Centennial High School, the 19th Judicial Circuit held Teen Court. Criminal Justice students from Fort Pierce Central, Fort Pierce Westwood, St. Lucie West Centennial, and Treasure Coast High Schools prepared and presented defense and prosecution cases. Students also served as jurors, bailiff, Clerk of the Court, and audience members for three cases involving teens.
Treasure Coast High School’s Criminal Justice students from Mr. Diego Rios’ class participated in a Teen Discourse Session with Federal Judges and Attorneys. This is a yearly event that transitioned to a virtual session this school year. The Criminal Justice 1 students of SLW Centennial High School got to go on an educational field trip to Indian River State College (IRSC), where they visit the Public Safety Complex. The trip provided the students with an invaluable opportunity to engage in hands-on activities and gain practical insights into various aspects of public safety and law enforcement. Criminal Justice Academy students from Treasure Coast High School (Mr. Rios’ class) and Fort Pierce Central (Mr. Wilder’s class) participated in a career exploration session with representatives from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. Fort Pierce Central students were able to participate virtually from their campus. Guest speakers included Crime Scene Investigation (Bridget Blatchford), K9 (Deputy Hill), and Sherriff’s Explorer Units (Deputy Raynolds, Deputy Gomez).
St. Lucie West Centennial High’s Criminal Justice student, Taylor Cuevas, is an Intern with the City of Fort Pierce- Code Enforcement Unit. This internship allows her to learn and apply her training as an Accredited Legal Professional. She states that she is gaining new knowledge and appreciates the opportunity. Taylor plans to attend the University of Central Florida to pursue Criminal Law after high school.
