CTE Department and Educators Presented at the Florida Career Pathways Network Annual Symposium

The Career and Technical Education(CTE) department along with Mr. Kevin Fess (Northport K-8), Dr. Richard Lanning (Fort Pierce Central High School and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University), and Mr. Phil Depuy (Treasure Coast High School) presented at the 2022 Florida Career Pathways Network conference. The two presentation topics were Career Pathways Programs: From Application to Revamping Program (Application, Planning, Learning) and Virtual Field Trips: A COVID Lesson.

CTE Celebrates Business Partners

Career and Technical educators from the district were provided the opportunity to partake in two ribbon cutting events hosted by the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners.  The celebrations included opening for the south county Drug Lab and the Heath Clinic on Lyngate Drive, Port St. Lucie.  This event was celebrated on May 22, 2018 alongside City and County Commissioners, Clerk of the Court, St. Lucie County Sheriff, and City of Port St. Lucie’s administrators.

Cross Curricular Connections at WEST Prep

Mrs. Hoots, a first year educator and Art teacher at WEST Prep, has been collaboratively planning with many different departments on campus to infuse art and content across our STEAM campus. Showcased here is a collaboration between the African American Studies and the Literacy Committee. Through the African American Studies lens, they read about coded quilts and their use in helping escaped slaves navigate the Underground Railroad. The Literacy Committee helped design a Writing to Learn element to synthesize the unit and practice reading and writing skills. Crocco Invited To Present At Carnegie Hall

Dr. Karen Crocco, SLPS Instructional Specialist for Visual and Performing Arts, was selected to present a session at the Carnegie Hall Summer Music Educator Workshop in New York City. Music educators from across the country came to Carnegie Hall to expand the impact of their work with young musicians. Dr. Crocco’s standing-room-only workshop entitled “Beginning with the End in Mind: Intention in Rehearsal and Assessment” focused on teacher learning to reinvigorate student creativity and musicianship, building a community of peers, and investing in one’s own artistry through creative activities and music-making ensembles. Critical thinking lessons in local schools helps student teams capture competition

Lincoln Park Academy sent three high school teams to this year’s Odyssey of the Mind state competition. Odyssey of the Mind, often referred to as OM (although the official acronym is OotM), is a creative problem-solving competition involving students from kindergarten through college. Team members work together at length to solve a predefined problem (the long term problem) and present their solution to the problem at a competition. They must also generate spontaneous solutions to a problem they have not seen before in the spontaneous competition. Cris Martinez’s Weather School Comes to REE

The 5th graders at Rivers Edge Elementary were honored to have Cris Martinez of Channel 25 News Weather Team host his Weather School on Wednesday, December 3. He used our very own students to explain how a tornado works and what happens when a cold and warm front collide. Our 5th graders welcomed Mr. Martinez with a song they had written about hurricanes.

Criminal Justice Virtual Advisory Board

Criminal Justice Academy Educators from St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) participated in a virtual advisory board meeting.  Board members represented: Indian River State College, Keiser University, St. Lucie County Human Resources, St. Lucie County Emergency Operations Center, St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office, SLPS Criminal Justice Educators, and Career and Technical Education department.

Criminal Justice Students Participate in Teen Court

Recently at St. Lucie West Centennial High School, the 19th Judicial Circuit held Teen Court. Criminal Justice students from Fort Pierce Central, Fort Pierce Westwood, St. Lucie West Centennial, and Treasure Coast High Schools prepared and presented defense and prosecution cases. Students also served as jurors, bailiff, Clerk of the Court, and audience members for three cases involving teens.

Criminal Justice Students Participate in Federal Court’s Teen Discourse Session

The Criminal Justice 1 students of SLW Centennial High School got to go on an educational field trip to Indian River State College (IRSC), where they visit the Public Safety Complex. The trip provided the students with an invaluable opportunity to engage in hands-on activities and gain practical insights into various aspects of public safety and law enforcement. Criminal Justice Student’s Career Exploration with St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office

Criminal Justice Academy students from Treasure Coast High School (Mr. Rios’ class) and Fort Pierce Central (Mr. Wilder’s class) participated in a career exploration session with representatives from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.  Fort Pierce Central students were able to participate virtually from their campus.  Guest speakers included Crime Scene Investigation (Bridget Blatchford), K9 (Deputy Hill), and Sherriff’s Explorer Units (Deputy Raynolds, Deputy Gomez).
