The St. Lucie County Education Foundation, through its Teacher of Excellence Utilizing Technology Grant, presented laptop computers from corporate sponsor Dell, to honor teachers who are currently utilizing technology to both enhance the curriculum in an innovative manner and to motivate engaged student learning in the classroom. Education Foundation of St. Lucie County

Thom Jones, Executive Director of the Education Foundation of St. Lucie County, provided an end-of-year update to the School Board. The St. Lucie County Education Foundation was founded in 1990 as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization whose purpose is to support the teachers and students of the St. Lucie County School District through programs not funded by tax revenue.

Education Foundation kicks off ‘Get On the Bus’ campaign

The St. Lucie Education Foundation has kicked off its “Get On the Bus” campaign to enhance community awareness of its variety of initiatives to benefit public education in St. Lucie County and encourage community involvement in those programs. The local initiative is part of the statewide foundation consortium drive to increase support of public education through local foundations. The local Education Foundation provides multiple vehicles for individuals and organizations to make a positive difference in education through volunteer efforts, contributions, and celebrations of teachers and students. St. Lucie County’s Education Foundation awarded 33 grants to teachers throughout the district. Executive Director Thom Jones indicated that the grants represent a $50,000.00 investment in quality educational programs to benefit student achievement.

Education Foundation awards over $80K in grant funds

The St. Lucie County Education Foundation awarded grants exceeding $83,000 at the November 12, 2013, meeting of the St. Lucie County School Board. The grants were for classroom, school-wide, and district-wide projects and were distributed to 11 schools and the district curriculum and instruction department. Education Foundation awards laptops to teachers

The St. Lucie County Education Foundation Teachers of Excellence Utilizing Technology committee selected three educators to receive a Dell Computer for their grant application. The teachers were selected based on their unique utilization of technology in the classroom to engage students and improve student achievement, and were presented their laptops at the May 22, 2012, St. Lucie County School Board meeting. Education Commissioner Stewart sends letter to parents on new assessment tool

Florida Department of Education Commissioner Pam Stewart this week announced the assessment tool selected to replace the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) as an annual standardized test for Florida public school students. The commissioner developed a letter for parents to understand the process. Education authority engages crowds of parents, students, school staff with message

Nationally recognized motivational speaker and education authority Dr. Adolph Brown III continued his commitment to St. Lucie Public Schools with two days of appointments at several schools and an evening community program at East Florida Primitive Baptist Association Temple in Fort Pierce. Dr. Brown’s messages energize, educate, inspire and entertain all audiences. Dr. Brown’s continued association with the school district is part of the five-year partnership with educational publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to transform the school system through instructional practice and excellence in materials. Edible manipulatives are fun in math

First grade students Willdarion Adams, Anaiah Armah, Lorraine Zimmerman, Ariel Major, and Makia Cooper in Deanna Scotto’s class at F.K. Sweet Elementary enjoy working within their small math group. This  lesson consisted of using candy hearts to reinforce graphing skills. Edible treats are always a favorite manipulative for young learners.     

EDC’s School Counselor & Educator Virtual Tour – Targeted Industry Exploration

The Economic Development Council (EDC) in collaboration with St. Lucie Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) department hosted a live session for school counselors, graduation coaches, CTE educators, and school and district administrators. Participants gained insight into the industry, growth, and employment opportunities within St. Lucie County. The presenters were Two Way Radio Gear, Indian River Select, and The Porch Factory. The presentation highlighted the upcoming Ready to Work Manufacturing and Distribution Boot Camp.

EDC Virtual Tour – Warehouse, Distribution, and Logistics Industry

The Economic Development Council (EDC) hosted a live virtual tour for counselors, educators, school and district administration. The focus for the session was on the warehouse, distribution, and logistics industry. Participants gained knowledge from local industry leaders from FedEx Ground Regional Sortation Center, Southern Eagle Distributing, and Walmart Distribution Center. This tied directly to the newest Career and Technical Education program, Global Logistics and Supply Chain Technology. St. Lucie Public School’s Career and Technical Education department is proud to have collaborated with the Economic Development Council (EDC) for this event!

Counselors Participate in Virtual Tour for Marine Industry

School and district administrators, counselors, educators, and graduation coaches from St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) participated in a virtual tour focused on the local marine industry.  Representatives from Maverick Boat Group, Freedom Boat Club, Shearwater Marine, and Derecktor Shipyard centered their discussion on employment opportunities and talent recruitment for their respective company.  This information will be shared with SLPS graduating seniors interested in this career pathway.  This ties directly to the Outboard Marine Service Technology program at St. Lucie West Centennial High School led by CTE Educator, Chadd Fleming.  This engaging event was made possible through the collaboration between St. … Read More

Ed Foundation Heralds Successes of District

During the October School Board meeting President of the Education Foundation Thom Jones launched “Working Together for Success,”  the Education Foundation’s theme to support all of the advances recently made by the School District in ranking and graduation rates. Jones shared the fact that The Foundation had obtained Resolutions of support from the City of Fort Pierce, the City of Port St. Lucie, and St. Lucie County to support naming the first week of November (1-7), 2017, as “Public Education Week” in recognition of the School District’s advances.

Economics Award

For 38 years, the Florida Council on Economic Education (FCEE) has recognized Florida’s most outstanding teachers for their creativity in presenting lessons in economics, personal finance, and entrepreneurship. Open to all K-12 teachers, the Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching Economics is a celebration of best practices and a way of acknowledging the innovation that teachers bring to the classroom. Frances K. Sweet is proud to have Mrs. Alice Parks win 1st Place in the Econ 101 Category.  

Economic Development Council Hosts High School Counselors Bus Tour

The St. Lucie County Economic Development Council (EDC) took high school counselors and teachers on a tour of three employer sites.  Stops included Twin Vee PowerCats boat manufacturing facility, Amazon distribution center, GHO Homes building site, and Courtyard by Marriott where Superintendent Prince and Pete Tesch spoke to the group while they were served lunch prepared by the Recovery Sports Grill. It was a great day of seeing current career opportunities available for St. Lucie Public Schools high school graduates.  Big thanks to the EDC’s Jen Dubey, Rachel Savela, Pete Tesch, and the Porch Factory’s Jim Brann.

Echoes and Reflections Holocaust Training

Social studies and ELA educators from St. Lucie participated in the Echoes and Reflections Holocaust training.  The training was provided by the Holocaust Task Force organized by Linda Medvin, Director of the FAU Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education.  The engaging presentation was lead by Stephanie McMahon Kaye from Yad Vashem. “I found this training to be an eye opening and engaging experience.
