Samuel Gaines Academy recently presented the kindergarten and first grade resource showcase for the month of April. Students demonstrated activities learned in music from Merritt Tilson using different instruments and sang a melody of animal songs. Megan Schwenger’s computer students displayed on the screens illustrations of the animals they made using computers. Patt Reynolds’ first grade media students presented a flannel board story and puppet show, and kindergartners sang Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Carmello Williams and Dominique Thomas welcomed Letycia Holley to Cindy Hedrick’s VPK class at Samuel Gaines Academy. The three students were playing in the dramatic play center imagining the future when they came up with these unusual, but flattering outfits.

Take Stock in Children scholarships are awarded to middle grades students after a selection process through the Indian River State College Education Foundation. The recipients will receive mentoring throughout high school, and then will have all four years of college tuition paid! There were hundreds of applications, and only 10 students were selected county-wide. Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies fourth graders and eighth graders recently exchanged success stories, personal challenges, and encouragement as they discussed their grade group’s journey through 2021-2022. Students and their older peers reflected on their individual data and offered each other good advice for the future. Shine on, Colts!
Samuel S. Gaines Academy’s Student Council facilitated the school’s participation in the Channel 5 Food For Families Drive. Their donations went to the Southside Baptist Church in Fort Pierce, and as a school they collected 1,773 items to donate to this worthy cause. Students and staff truly showed the Thanksgiving spirit by opening their pantries and their hearts to support people in need in our community. Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies AVID students attended a virtual presentation by the University of Central Florida STEM Ambassadors. 6th and 8th grade students learned about various engineering degrees offered by UCF, as well as general information about college readiness. Students were able to connect what they are currently learning in their STEM elective classes to what they can study in college, and then what future career options are available to them.

The Samuel Gaines Academy soccer team competed at the recent district tournament at Fort Pierce Central High School. The Colts proudly represented their school as they shut out two of their opponents on their way to the semi-finals for a second straight year. The Samuel S. Gaines Academy Soccer Team went 3-2 at the District Winter Tournament. Lead by captains Manuel Esquivel #20, and Jean Saintable #10, the team advanced to the semi-finals. The leading scorer for the day was Luis Gil #4, who had six goals, beating the team record of 5 goals set a year earlier by his cousin Jesus Gil. While Luis was the leading offensive player, the star of the day was the goalie, Jose Villalta, who made save after save. Students in Christen McCray’s class at Gaines Academy K8 wrapped up a Nature of Science unit in which they investigated airplanes. Students flew airplanes made from various types of paper to see which would fly the farthest. Students applied the scientific method as they developed a hypothesis, collected, recorded, graphed, analyzed data, drew a conclusion and shared the results. Pictured is Johnnie Velasquez.
Students Jovante Briggs and Jonathan Derinor from Jackie Kendall’s sixth grade second period math class at Gaines Academy were given the task of creating a math game using all of the skills they had learned this year. The boys created the game, as well as the rules, game cards, and pieces. They were then asked to test the game out on some of their classmates to see if what they had created was as exciting to them as it was to the boys. The students who played the game said it was fun and exciting.
Enthusiastic seventh grade students in Beth Torresson’s reading class at Samuel Gaines Academy have diligently been working hard in the “Language” reading program. This 90 minute direct instruction is given on a daily basis. The “Language” program is a comprehensive literacy curriculum. The students work on a variety of concepts each day, including grammar and usage, listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing, phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition, spelling, vocabulary and morphology. All of these concepts will enhance their skills to become better readers and to understand the structure of the English language more proficiently.
Students and staff at Samuel S. Gaines Academy are very proud of the newly formed Girl Scout Troop #40729. The young ladies who participate in troop acitivies learn about their special talents and how to be leaders in their community. The new troop is comprised of second through fifth graders who are Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts. Pictured are troop members with their sashes, who are ready to serve their community with a smile.

When the 2014-2015 school year started Mrs. Wilke presented the students with a challenge. She challenged them to read 1,000,000 steps of reading practice for 100 Book Challenge. Mrs. Wilke told the students if they met the principal’s challenge she would do anything they wanted her to do. The students voted on several options such as sing karaoke, dress like a clown, and complete the Ice Bucket Challenge.
