ST. LUCIE COUNTY – Walk for Autism Speaks is a community event organized by volunteers at West Gate K-8 school in collaboration with Palm Point Educational Research School at Tradition. On Saturday, April 2, an estimated 2,000 staff from St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS), community organizations, and families poured into Tradition Square to begin the Walk. After learning about their school family in class, the VPK children in Mrs. Reynolds and Ms. Ifill-Bowen’s class at Allapattah Flats took a tour to visit some of the people who work in their school. They met school personnel and saw them at work. The children learned a little more about what each person does in the school.

At Mariposa Elementary, VPK learned about friendship and how to make a friend. They also learned how to be a friend. Mrs. Bonilla’s lesson included how friends care for one another, how they are kind, and how they are loyal. Loyal was the word of the week and tied nicely into the friendship theme. The students then created friendship bracelets which included the first letter of their name. We are excited to announce that Dr. Karen Crocco, Instructional Specialist for Visual and Performing Arts for St. Lucie Public Schools, has been invited to be a presenter at the 2020 Summer Online Arts Integration and STEAM Conference this year. The Online Conference has inspiring TED-style talks plus hands-on teacher-led workshops. The conference is starting on July 16 and registration is open now at ArtsIntegrationConfernece.com. St. Lucie Soars is an early literacy effort launched by St. Lucie Public Schools that includes a community initiative in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters. A component of the program involves the recruitment of volunteers/mentors to support reading efforts in kindergarten through grade three. Community members are asked to consider becoming volunteers for St. Lucie Soars by donating one hour each week to read with a child. Each year, the United Way of St. Lucie County hosts a Stuff the Bus event. It is a one day push for the collection of school supplies at all local Walmart locations. This year the event will be held on July 20th from 9 AM – 3 PM. It is a great opportunity to come out and volunteer! Volunteers serve in 2 hour shifts at the Walmart of their choosing.
