The American Heart Association proclaimed February as National Heart Month. And Friday, February 7, was celebrated as National Wear Red Day. For the last decade, the American Heart Association has promoted Women Going Red for heart disease, which kills more women than all forms of cancer combined. School district continues powerful energy rebate partnership with FPL

The St. Lucie County School Board was presented a rebate check in the amount of nearly $680,000 at the February 11, 2014, business meeting from Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) as a result of completion and verification of chiller plant replacement projects at Port St. Lucie High School, Mariposa Elementary and Southern Oaks Middle School. The school district has partnered with FPL over several years on school energy upgrades that both reduce energy consumption and reduce the need for FPL to upgrade their systems or build new power plants. School Community Draws Together

A wonderful program was recently held in the Northport Media Center! The entire fourth grade came together with their teachers to learn about the autoimmune disease, Alopecia. Jeffery Woytovich, a representative from the “Children’s Alopecia Project,” came to raise awareness about alopecia. Students and teachers learned that there are three types of alopecia, or hair loss, Alopecia Areata, which is patchy hair loss, Alopecia Totalis which is majority or total loss of hair above the neck, and Alopecia Universalis which is total body hair loss. School Board votes to extend superintendent search

The St. Lucie County School Board today decided to extend the search for a successor to retiring Superintendent Michael Lannon during a meeting with search consultant Jim Huge. Huge began the meeting by announcing that finalist Scott Bailey withdrew his candidacy due to personal health issues. Board members could come to no clear consensus in selecting a new superintendent, so they discussed several options suggested by Huge, from selecting one of the finalists, to beginning the process anew later in the year. School-based Immunization Clinics for 6th Graders

School-based Immunization Clinics for 6th Graders (State required TDAP shot prior to entering 7th grade) Agreement with Healthy Schools, LLC, the company that administers the FluMist in the schools. Healthy Schools will come into each school that has 6th graders and offer the TDAP in the same way they have done the FluMist for the past two schools years. Scholarship Dollars Committed at the HBCU/HSI College Fair

Seniors were awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to launch their collegiate careers at the premier SLPS HBCU/HIS College Fair, and others were bought together with collegiate advisors who shed light on academic programs and information that will serve to brighten futures and spark dreams. Leah Scheible, a rising junior at Fort Pierce Central High School, was recognized at the August SLPS Board Meeting because she made a big splash at this year’s Special Olympics 2018 USA Games held in Seattle, Washington.   As one of Florida’s 7-member swim team delegation, Leah took twin silvers in her individual 200 freestyle event and 4X50 freestyle relay, and she scooped a fourth-place finish in her individual 100 freestyle event.   Leah’s swim coach, Heather Gray, who accompanied Leah to the Board meeting, describes her as an outstanding athlete.   Leah participates in swim, track, basketball and cheerleading … Read More
