SGAET Kindergarten Treehouses

Samuel Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies kindergarten students culminated their unit of study on Needs and Wants with a STEM challenge. Students listened to the book, Everything You Need to Build a Treehouse; and then drew a blueprint of a treehouse. They brainstormed the materials they would need. Then, they gathered their materials and built their treehouses. SGAET Investigates the Atmosphere

6th grade students in Ms. Blackburn’s Science Resource were able to recreate the layers of the atmosphere. This was a great hands-on activity to help show students how some layers are thicker or heavier than others and how they act upon one another.

SGAET Gears Up

Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies (SGAET) received a facelift in the cafeteria.  Students and staff were excited to see the fresh new design that coincides with the school’s STEM focus.    

SGAET Colts Receive Early Innovator Distinction

Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies has been awarded a UBTECH Early Innovator Grant! SGAET is the first and only school  in Florida to be awarded an Early Innovator Grant, and just 23 schools across the nation received the award. UBTECH Education is a division of UBTECH—a global leader in intelligent, humanoid robots for consumers, business, and industry. Now, students will have the opportunity to work with UBTECH Robotics UKITs to practice engineering, coding, and apply their understanding of science and mathematics to create fully functioning robots. SGAET Clouds in a Jar

Ms. Blackburn’s Science Resource classes have been studying the water cycle. At the end of the unit, they created clouds in a jar to see the cycle in action. Using hot water and ice cubes the creation of evaporation and precipitation was shown.  Then, hairspray was used to mimic dust particles for water droplets to attach to create the clouds. What an awesome STEM activity!

SGAET Cleartouch Boards

Samuel S.Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies’ first grade students were able to divide their new Cleartouch interactive board into different centers to be used at the same time! Students played baseball while also calculating equations to determine a sum. They used digital pictures of animals to associate with scientific words. Finally, students sorted pictures to understand the differences between fruits and vegetables while also sorting short and long vowels.

SGAET Bullying Prevention Interactive Stories

In honor of National Bullying Prevention Month, Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies 6th grade students in Miss G’s computer science class are raising self-awareness on how to prevent bullying in their school and community using the block-based programming language called Scratch. Students get to put their computational thinking and problem-solving skills to the test by using events, sequences, and parallel responses to code an interactive anti-bullying message (in the form of their choice – e.g., ad, story, meme, animation), highlighting how to thwart and stand up against bullying. SGAET American History Z-space

While studying the 13 colonies in American History class, Ms. Secrest took her eighth graders to utilize the Z-space lab. The students used the 3D technology to read maps, dissect the colonies into regions, and analyze the climate and geography, in order to predict the economic focus of the region. All of the students really enjoyed the activity, but more importantly, they were able to understand the concepts more deeply and make better predictions about each region.  

SGAET 8th Graders “Think Win-Win”

Mr. Nicks’ 8th grade homeroom students were given a weekly STEM challenge: determine the number of balls in a large box. Students were given 5 minutes to plan their approach while keeping in mind the Leader in Me habit of “Think Win-Win”. The students were then given a 5 minute timer to execute their plan. SGA Welcomes Dan Frank

Samuel Gaines Academy had the honor of having Mr. Dan Frank, executive director of schools for SLPS, as a guest speaker for the Speakers’ Bureau. Eighth graders had the opportunity to hear Mr. Frank’s story and his life’s struggles before he became an educator. All in an effort to help students understand the importance of an education, hard work, and effort. He was accompanied by Dr. Donna Mills, SLPS board member, and Pastor Kenny Mills Sr.

SGA Welcomes D. G. Burns

Samuel Gaines Academy had the honor, once again, of hosting the Speakers Bureau with Dr. Donna Mills. During the month of October,  Samuel Gaines students were inspired by Dr. Mills and their very own Dean Gerard Burns who shared their story and struggles as they prepared to achieve their goals in life.

SGA Speakers Bureau

The Speakers Bureau Special Guest Speakers at Samuel S. Gaines Academy K-8 this month were Mr. E. Wayne Gent, Superintendent of St. Lucie Public Schools, and Mr. Lafayette Ashley, Graduating Senior of Ft. Pierce Central High School Class of 2016. Mr. Gent captured the attention of the students as he told them how he chose to never give up on his dream of becoming a superintendent of schools. SGA Red & Gold Tie Event

The SGA Red & Gold Tie event was an amazing success. Gentlemen from around the county supported Sam Gaines Academy middle school students at the event. These community leaders provided practical tips to the young men on how to tie a tie and offered professional advice on being a successful person. Great relationships were formed and positive expectations were established.  

SGA Recycle Program

7th grade students at Samuel Gaines have started a recycling program. While conducting Project Citizen research, students discovered that Samuel Gaines did not have a recycling program and realized the effects on the environment.  Through the help of 7th and 8th grade teachers, they were able to start a recycling program partnering with Fort Pierce Recycling. Every Thursday students pick up recycling items from teachers classroom. Currently the program only accepts paper, but students hope to expand to all recyclable items. SGA Parent Night

On Thursday evening, SGA parents attended the “A Day in the Life of an SGA Scholar” Parent Night. Parents began their journey in the audeteria where they learned about the Title I program.  Also, they were excited about the announcement of the principal’s reading challenge. When the SGA students reach 250,000,000 reading steps, Ms. Wilke will do a cheer leading routine. After the initial session, parents made their way to their student’s pod to experience what their scholar does during their academic day.  Students were excited to showcase their work.  

SGA Donuts With Dad

Dads Take Your Child To School Day was a huge success at Gaines Academy. Fathers and other male role models streamed into Gaines Academy on Wednesday morning. They were treated to donuts and an inspirational message followed by smiles and laughter as they created a vision board with their child. Before leaving, the men signed the pledge to support and encourage their children’s success in school.    

SGA Community Meeting

Gaines Academy students enjoyed sharing the Good News of Gaines at a community meeting held at New Destiny Family Worship Center on the evening of October 15th.
