According to award winning children’s book author Donna Gephart, “Friday was the best school visit I’ve done in 8 years. Southport Middle School Celebrates Student Growth

Southport Middle School recently honored students’ hard work and progress on their PM2 FAST assessments with a special “Pizza for Performance” celebration. Students who demonstrated growth in one subject enjoyed outdoor free time, while those who improved in both reading and math earned time outside plus a delicious pizza treat! The event was filled with laughter, fresh air, and plenty of socializing as students celebrated their achievements together. Southport Middle School’s Athletic Department held a sports banquet in honor of all our student athletes. Southport’s Athletic Department was created to promote academics through sports and school involvement. The night of the banquet demonstrated school culture where family, friends, coaches, and players all come together to celebrate their player’s achievements. Southport Middle School Celebrates Readers at Level Up Luncheon

Southport Middle School’s top readers recently gathered for a Level Up Luncheon in the media center to celebrate their accomplishments and be rewarded for their achievements in the Reading Plus program. Several students celebrated leveling up by reading over 100 See Readers in the program and some of our students surpassed all the lessons in the program leveling up well above their goals. Southport Middle School Celebrates Literacy Week 2019

Southport Middle School students had a great time celebrating Literacy Week 2019. This year’s theme from the Florida Department of Education was “Spreading Literacy, One View at a Time.” The week began with a door decorating contest and homerooms were given the entire week to complete their project. Students started the celebration on Tuesday dressed as their favorite book character and ended the day with their families at a Literacy Evening of fun, games, food, and books from the Scholastic Book Fair held in the Media Center. Southport Middle School celebrates literacy week

The celebration began with teachers dressing up as pirates, and reading the second school wide read aloud of “Treasure Island”.  Book trailers were run on WSPM Channel 2 News. Students were given materials to make book marks which would include content from the read aloud.  The week ended with a book swap held in the Media Center.  Students were encouraged to bring in a new or gently used book and were able to pick from a variety of popular new titles in exchange. Pictured, from left are, Sharon Dudash, Kimberly Nicholas, Wanda Galey, Christine Richards, Lilias Demontegnac, Adrianne Mendoza, Andrea Levin and Dana Hochberg.

Southport Middle School Celebrates Literacy

Southport students celebrated Literacy Week with a giant book swap, popcorn, raffles, and a beautiful afternoon in the courtyard. Students were asked to bring in a gently used book  they have read and enjoyed, and would recommend to a friend. There were plenty of wonderful books to choose from. The book exchange was just one of the fun ways students had the chance to celebrate literacy with their fellow classmates.

Southport Middle School Beach Clean Up

Southport Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society teamed up with Student Council members and their families for an environmental service project to help clean up St. Lucie County beaches. The “Beach Clean Up” is one of Southport’s favorite service project initiatives that students are participating in this school year. The cleanup took place at Jensen Beach.

Southport Middle School announces essay winners

This year, students in grades 5-8 at Southport Middle School were challenged to imagine themselves living during the American Revolution for the D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution) essay contest. How would they feel? What would they do? How would their lives be different during the time of war instead of a time of peace? Southport Middle School 8th Graders Analyze Poetry

8th-grade students at Southport Middle School immersed themselves in the world of poetry. Through focused instruction and engaging activities, students explored a variety of poems with an emphasis on figurative language. They examined how literary devices such as metaphors, similes, personification, and imagery contribute to deeper meaning and emotional impact. By analyzing the poets’ word choices and stylistic techniques, students developed a stronger understanding of how language can evoke mood, tone, and theme. This deep dive into poetry not only enhanced their analytical skills but also encouraged personal interpretation and creative thinking, fostering a greater appreciation for literary expression.

Southport Middle School 6th Grade Student Retreat

Southport’s 6th grade students enjoyed an engaging, positive, and busy day at our first annual Student Retreat. Students participated in several activities and games throughout the day, as well as small group discussions where they learned about each other’s likes and dislikes. In addition to writing motivational letters to themselves (which will be given back to them during the school year), they received Palanca letters, which are letters of encouragement from teachers, staff, and family members. Southport Middle presents Sleeping Beauty

 The Southport Middle School performing arts presented the Disney Play “Sleeping Beauty”.  There were performances for the students during the day and for Morningside Elementary School students.  Parents and community members were invited to come to the evening performances. It was a huge success with great theatrical performances done under the direction of Mary Osking. Southport Middle opens Canes cafe

Southport Middle School students were the first to spend Cane Cash to have lunch together at the new PBS hot spot on campus. Principal Lydia Martin and Assistant Principal Nicole Telese stopped by to see students enjoying cool conversation in the relaxing atmosphere, dining in comfort with their friends at the new PBS Canes VIP Luncheon located in the SPMS cafeteria. Southport Middle Keeps Their Bus Drivers Warm

Southport Middle School is overflowing with gratitude for our amazing bus drivers!  On Thursday, when the temperatures were in the 40s, the bus drivers of Southport Middle School were greeted with a cup of hot cocoa and a special note to keep them warm.  The note read, “A special thank you from us, because you do so much on the bus.  Wrap your taste buds around this cozy hot cocoa-it’s like a warm hug in a mug.”   Southport Middle School staff is extremely thankful for all the work our bus drivers put in each and every day.  Huge shout out … Read More

Southport Middle junior honor society members thankful for support
