St. Lucie County students rank number one in the nation for the Middle School Zero Robotics Challenge held on the International Space Station on Tuesday, August 13th. Two teams of students participated in the 5-week summer program held at Southern Oaks Middle School. Kevin McInerney and Brian Jones facilitated the teams to learn about and write programs that could control satellites in space.  The participants competed with 26 other teams across the nation to win a technically challenging game by programming their strategies into a SPHERE satellite.  A series of elimination tournaments were conducted with astronauts on the International Space Station and the event was … Read More

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit Highlighted at St. Lucie West Centennial High School, Criminal Justice & Law Academy Students

St. Lucie West Centennial High School students from Mrs. Baumgarten and Mr. Nichol’s classes were introduced to a few local heroes.  The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit came out to meet and speak with students about working in law enforcement.  Students were well engaged and enjoyed observing the demonstrations provided by the unit.  Thank you to Deputy Randy Hunter, Deputy Steve Wise, and Sergeant Ben Deblieck; and the Career & Technical Educators for organizing this event for students in Criminal Justice/ Law Academy at St. Lucie West Centennial High School.

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team Demonstration with Centennial’s Criminal Justice Students

Representatives from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone team hosted a live demonstration for Criminal Justice and Law Academy students from St. Lucie West Centennial High School.  Special thanks to SLPS Criminal Justice Advisory Board member, Sergeant Wes Harbrin from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office for setting up this event!  Mrs. Angela Baumgarten’s students were engaged and learned about skills, training, and career options for sUAS industry certification and the connection of drones to the field of law enforcement.  

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department Provides Bike to Forest Grove Middle School Student

Forest Grove Middle School’s Resource Officer, Deputy Smith saw a need and quickly jumped in to help! When working with a student, she realized that the student who was recovering from a recent injury was having a difficult time walking to and from school. She reached out to the Community Liaison Department of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office for help. They were able to provide the student with a bicycle. Thank you Deputy Smith and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office for your support of our students!

St. Lucie County Schools Hosts Teacher Recruitment Fair

St. Lucie County Schools hosted its annual Teacher Recruitment Fair on June 23, 2014 with over 150 applicants attending this event.  School leaders from 16 schools interviewed prospective teachers in preparation for the coming school year which begins August 18, 2014. Recognizing that the greatest impact on student success is high quality instruction one of the District’s Strategic Goals is to recruit and retain effective teachers for all classrooms.   As one of several recruitment strategies the Fair provided an opportunity to hire teachers before school starts. St. Lucie County Reading Council – Book Fest

The St. Lucie County Reading Council invites parents and students to Bookfest – a March 5, 2016, literacy event hosted by C.A. Moore Elementary School in Fort Pierce. This free reading festival is scheduled from 10 AM to noon and is designed to provide attendees with a wide variety of literacy resources and information.  Activities and resource stations include: Read to a VIP, Community Resource Information Station, Literacy Games and Prizes, Free Literacy Resource Center, Book Exchange, Mother Goose, and much more!  

St. Lucie County Partnership with Fort Pierce Westwood’s Criminal Justice Academy 911 Program Wins NACO Award

Fort Pierce Westwood’s Criminal Justice Academy was recognized by St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners during the county board meeting.  Ms. Mildred Brown and St. Lucie Public Schools was recognized for the joint effort where students go to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) as interns, guided class tours of the facility yearly, and guest speaker presentations.  This partnership enables students to earn training hours towards their industry certification.  Additionally, students completing the program and earning their 911 industry certification can apply for and become hired by St. Lucie County as Emergency Dispatchers.

St. Lucie County High School Art Show

The annual St. Lucie County High School Art Show opening is Friday, April 20th, from 5 to 8pm.  This year’s show takes place in the Galleria of Pierce Harbor building at 100 S. 2nd St. in Ft. Pierce. An awards ceremony will take place at 7:15 after the closing of “Peoples’ Choice” voting. Students will be judged in 6 categories for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, plus a “Peoples’ Choice” award. St. Lucie County Firefighters Visit FPCHS

The St. Lucie County Fire District brought firefighters and fire trucks to visit a class at Fort Pierce Central High School.  The students spent the afternoon learning about fire safety, finding out what it takes to be a firefighter, and exploring a fire truck.  Thank you to SLCFD for making the visit so enjoyable for our students!

School display winners from the St. Lucie County Fair were recognized at the April 10, 2012 St. Lucie County School Board meeting, and presented with their monetary awards. As one of the largest private scholarship programs in St. Lucie County, the Education Foundation awards approximately 60 scholarships each year thanks to our many donors, such as Aaron Project. Online applications are now being accepted through March 21st and awards will be announced on May 3, 2021. All graduating seniors in St. Lucie Public Schools are invited to apply at www.efslc.org. St. Lucie County Early Childhood Conference

180 Early Childhood Educators engaged in a morning of learning, laughter, and comradery, hosted by the SLPS Early Childhood Department, ALPI-Head Start, The Early Learning Coalition, and the Children’s Services Council. Fabulous keynote sessions were delivered by: Chancellor Cari Miller and Mandy Rowland, FLDOE; Mabel Ramirez, Discount School Supply; and Tony Chaidez, Lakeshore Learning. 90% of a child’s brain is developed by the age of 5. We greatly appreciate the educators of our youngest students! 

St. Lucie County Clerk Holds Town Hall Meeting with Dan McCarty Civics Students

Dan McCarty Middle School is stepping up their civics game this year! The local middle school was proud to welcome County Clerk Joseph Smith into the Eagles family for a visit to all seventh graders. It’s a state requirement for seventh graders to have a civic education, and Dan McCarty has found innovative ways of teaching the subject. The visit from Clerk Joseph Smith was an opportunity for students to communicate with an elected official about public policy ideas and interact with a public servant who was also once a student in St Lucie County. The St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce Foundation congratulates the Young Floridian Scholarship Program Winners for the 2017-2018 academic year. The Young Floridian Award was established in 1988 by General Development Corporation to recognize outstanding seniors for achievement and service to their school and community. Young Floridian awards honor one St. Lucie high school senior in 15 academic or extracurricular disciplines. Winners were announced at the award ceremony on February, 21st at the Indian River State College McAlpin Fine Arts Theatre. St. Lucie Centennial SWAT hosts meeting

St. Lucie West Centennial High School SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) Club hosted the monthly meeting of the Tobacco Free Partnership of St. Lucie County recently. Social Studies educators from Pensacola to Key West made their way to Palm Harbor, Florida for the 60th Annual Florida Council for Social Studies Conference.
