Mrs. Slappey’s Wilderness Club from Rivers Edge Elementary embarked on another trail expedition, uncovering some of nature’s hidden gems. The students were thrilled to discover an opossum jaw bone, a snake skin, and some enchanting lichen along the way. The experience was nothing short of magical, sparking curiosity and wonder among the budding naturalists.
Founded in 2017 by Mrs. Slappey, the Wilderness Club has been a cornerstone of hands-on learning at Rivers Edge Elementary. The club’s activities include hiking the trails behind the campus and exploring the back trails overlooking the St. Lucie River. Students learn to identify various animal scat, game trails, alligator signs, gopher tortoise nests, and both native and invasive plant species. They also practice nature etiquette, learning to observe without disturbing and to pick up litter left by others.
Mrs. Slappey integrates science standards into these hikes, encouraging students to discover nature with fresh eyes and fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world. This hands-on exploration not only provides unique learning opportunities but also instills a sense of responsibility and respect for the environment!
