St. Lucie West Centennial High School NJROTC Visits National Guard Armory

On Friday, May 15, the cadets of the St. Lucie West Centennial NJROTC program participated in an educational field trip to a National Guard Armory, where they gained valuable insight into military operations, safety procedures, and leadership training.
Upon arrival, the cadets were welcomed by Staff Sergeant Munshower, who introduced the group to a variety of military weapons and equipment used by today’s armed forces. Cadets were able to closely observe several tactical systems and combat firearms while learning the importance of proper weapon safety and handling procedures. Although all weapons were unloaded, cadets received instruction on maintaining muzzle awareness, keeping fingers off triggers, and safely transferring weapons between individuals.
Throughout the visit, cadets practiced proper weapon-handling techniques and learned how body positioning, balance, and posture are essential when handling heavier military equipment. They were taught the importance of maintaining control, discipline, and awareness while working with military gear. These demonstrations gave cadets a greater appreciation for the level of training and professionalism required within the armed forces.
In addition to the weapons and safety demonstrations, cadets had the opportunity to hear from a guest speaker involved in a College ROTC program. The speaker shared personal experiences about military training, leadership development, and life within ROTC programs at the collegiate level. Cadets actively participated by asking questions regarding boot camp preparation, physical fitness, and military career opportunities.
One of the highlights of the trip was a hands-on crowd control exercise conducted outside using protective shields similar to those utilized by law enforcement personnel. Cadets worked together in teams while practicing proper defensive formations and techniques. The activity emphasized teamwork, communication, and discipline, making it one of the most memorable portions of the visit.
The field trip concluded with a group photo in front of the unit’s logo and a presentation of medals of appreciation from the NJROTC Commanding Officer to the individuals who dedicated their time to mentoring and instructing the cadets throughout the day.
Overall, the visit provided cadets with a unique opportunity to experience military professionalism firsthand while reinforcing the core values of leadership, discipline, teamwork, and respect. The NJROTC cadets represented the program with outstanding behavior and professionalism throughout the entire trip.
