Powerful Learning Experiences Bring History to Life at Oak Hammock K-8

Oak Hammock K-8 recently provided students with two meaningful and impactful experiences that brought history to life and deepened students’ understanding of perseverance, empathy, and the lasting impact of history.

Holocaust Survivor Visit – 5th and 6th Grade

Our 6th-grade students had the profound opportunity to participate in a Holocaust Survivor Visit as part of our annual Holocaust Remembrance observance. Survivors from The Child Survivors/Hidden Children of the Holocaust of Palm Beach County spent the day at OHK8 sharing their personal stories and lived experiences with students.

Through firsthand accounts, students gained a deeper understanding of the historical realities of the Holocaust and the lasting impact of those events. Listening directly to survivors allowed students to connect classroom learning to real lives, fostering empathy, reflection, and a greater appreciation for the importance of remembering history so that it is never repeated. This powerful experience reinforced the value of courage, resilience, and responsibility.

Living Voices Performance: Through the Eyes of a Friend – 8th-Grade

Our 8th-grade students attended a moving Living Voices performance titled Through the Eyes of a Friend, an innovative program that combines live theatrical performance with archival film and historical imagery.

The performance tells the story of the Holocaust through the perspective of a young Jewish girl, paralleling the life of Anne Frank and reflecting the experiences of many children and families during World War II. By blending personal narrative with historical context, the program allowed students to experience history in a deeply engaging and meaningful way.

This immersive performance encouraged students to think critically about historical events, understand multiple perspectives, and reflect on how the lessons of the past connect to the present. The experience supported students in developing empathy, historical awareness, and a stronger understanding of the human impact of intolerance and discrimination.
