Last week at Fort Pierce Central High School, teachers from the 9th Grade ELA, AICE General Paper, and Intensive Reading teams came together for a dynamic collaborative planning session filled with creativity and purpose. The focus? Engaging strategies for teaching poetry that spark student interest and deepen understanding.

Led by the ever-inspiring Mrs. Devries, the session highlighted interactive, student-centered techniques designed to promote critical thinking and meaningful dialogue. Teachers began by individually reading and reflecting on a poem, then shared interpretations in small groups. The session included an engaging “Post-It Rotation” activity, where groups moved around the room responding to thought-provoking questions posted on the walls. This movement-based strategy encouraged lively discussion and fresh perspectives.
The session concluded with a whole-group reflection and an exit ticket, prompting educators to consider how these strategies could be adapted for their own classrooms. This collaborative effort is a shining example of how teachers at Fort Pierce Central work together to create engaging lessons that motivate students toward academic excellence.
