Fort Pierce Showdown- An Annual Tradition

The Annual Fort Pierce Showdown was proudly kicked off by enjoying the Pre-Huddle Breakfast, bringing together the football teams of Fort Pierce Central High School and Fort Pierce Westwood Academy for a morning of unity, inspiration, and celebration ahead of Showdown 47.

The event was nothing short of spectacular. Our dynamic Masters of Ceremony, Mr. Peter Crespo and Senior Jakobe Blackwood, energized the crowd with engaging football stats and entertaining skits that kept everyone captivated from start to finish.

We were honored to welcome a distinguished lineup of guests, including alumni from both schools, students from Dan McCarty, our Chief of Schools Dr. Sommer, Executive Director Mr. Canamas, and several impactful speakers. Pastor Gregory Pressley opened with a heartfelt invocation, followed by Pastor Dr. Ronald Evans, who delivered the blessing and benediction. Former players Derrick Hallman (FPC Class of 2007) and Jabarri Williams (FPWA Class of 1992) shared powerful reflections, and we were thrilled to have Mr. Wayne E. Gent, former superintendent of St. Lucie Public Schools, join us as a special speaker. Our very own Mrs. Vernicia Eliacin delivered a powerful rendition of ROAR.

Coaches Mike Watkins (FPC) and LaDavaris Vann (FPWA), along with Athletic Directors Peter Crespo (FPC) and James Gardner (FPWA), delivered motivational messages that resonated deeply. Principals Mr. Eldrique Gardner (FPC) and Mr. David Alfonso (FPWA) added a fun and spirited exchange that highlighted the camaraderie between the schools. Our student-athletes also took the stage, delivering inspiring speeches that truly stood out.

The 46th renewal of The Showdown was more than just a game—it was a statement. Fort Pierce Central reclaimed neighborhood bragging rights and capped off a historic regular season with a hard- fought victory over rival Fort Pierce Westwood.

Under the bright lights of Calvin L. Triplett Field at Lawnwood Stadium, the Cobras showcased grit, determination, and heart, grinding out a 14-6 win to finish the season at 9-1, their best record in over a decade. This wasn’t about flashy scores—it was about resilience. Guided by a relentless defense and a disciplined offensive approach, the Cobras proved they can win tough when it matters most.

“I’m happy for the kids, super pumped for them,” said Head Coach Mike Watkins. “To finish the year at 9-1, I couldn’t be more proud of their commitment and the incredible work from our coaching staff. We’ve faced adversity, but this team never quit.”

The rivalry lived up to its reputation, with the last five Showdowns decided by one score. This victory marks Central’s first win over Westwood since 2022 and gives the Cobras a 24-22 edge in the all- time series.

Key moments included:

  • Second-quarter spark: A clutch fourth-and-11 conversion set up Von Adams’ 1-yard touchdown run.
  • Third-quarter magic: QB Drew LaPlante connected with Aiden Gluck on a 35-yard slant for the game’s biggest play.
  • Defensive dominance: Five sacks and critical stops sealed the win, proving that “the trenches mattered.”

Despite missing key offensive weapons, the Cobras adapted, controlled the clock, and leaned on their defense to shut down Westwood’s late rally.

Now, the focus shifts to the postseason. Ranked third in Region 3-7A, Central is poised for an at-large berth and could host a playoff game for the first time in more than a decade. Quarterfinals kick off Friday, Nov. 14—and the Cobras are ready.

We couldn’t be prouder of our players, Coach Watkins, and the entire staff. Their hard work and dedication have paid off in a season to remember. If you see our Cobras on campus, take a moment to congratulate them—they’ve earned it! Fort Pierce Central caps a historic 9-1 season with a gritty 14-6 victory over Westwood—bringing the trophy home and setting sights on the playoffs!
