“Through the Eyes of a Friend” Comes to Manatee Academy K-8

The Living Voices performance, funded by InSIGHT Through Education, provided 6th-grade students at Manatee K-8 with an educational experience that went beyond traditional classroom learning, offering them an immersive and emotional connection to history. By presenting the story from Sarah’s perspective, a composite character based on real testimonies, the performance allowed students to engage with the Holocaust in a deeply personal way. The students were able to witness the events through the eyes of a young girl their own age, experiencing her fears, struggles, and triumphs as she navigates life during this perilous time and survival. This perspective humanized the historical events, making them more relatable and impactful for the students.

The performance also helped students understand the broader context of the Holocaust, not just through the lens of Anne Frank’s famous diary, but through the experiences of countless other young people who endured similar hardships. As Sarah’s journey unfolded, students were exposed to important historical concepts which allowed students to gain insights into the complexities of resistance, survival, and the devastation of war. The inclusion of multimedia elements and Sarah’s direct storytelling created a multi-sensory learning experience, fostering empathy and a more profound understanding of history.
