The F.K. Sweet Elementary Drama Club recently presented “A Fairy Tale Christmas” for parents and students. Fairy tale characters from all of the favorite classics try to prevent the evil stepmother from ruining Christmas by spreading good cheer with a little help from the Fairy Godmother! Garden City Early Learning Academy (GCELA) celebrated Literacy Week with many fun activities for the students. Curious George was the special guest that visited classrooms to get the students excited about reading. The students participated in a Vocabulary Quilt Contest and reviewed high frequency words. Students were rewarded with a badge/sticker for the number of high frequency words known. In addition, each child received their very own book to take home. GCELA encourages children to read each night for at least 30 minutes. Pictured with Curious George is second grade student Kadejah Stevens.
St. Lucie West Centennial High School Navy Junior ROTC field meet competition team participated at a field meet in Miami Beach recently. Even though the team was missing some valuable players, the cadets overcame their disadvantage and took home 10 trophies, the most the unit has ever earned. The cadets took first place in Armed Exhibition Drill and first place in Unarmed Basic Drill, and came in third place overall out of 15 schools. Congratulations to the Black Talon Navy Junior ROTC cadets.
Students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently had a “Twin Day” to raise money for Relay for Life. This organization raises money for cancer awareness and for different services for cancer patients. Each year Palm Pointe participates and several activities are planned to help raise money. St. Lucie Public Schools’ school nutrition services department’s Anita Alli, president of the St. Lucie County Florida School Nutrition Association, enlisted the support of Superintendent Michael Lannon in the local group’s application for a President’s Award through the state association. The award, “Living Today for a Better Tomorrow,” recognizes school districts which actively work together districtwide to promote education and nutrition. Seven seventh grade students from Samuel S. Gaines Academy impressed the judges at the recent districtwide Project Citizen event hosted at Samuel Gaines Academy. State Farm agent Janine Tillman sponsored the fourth grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition by donating trees and wildflower seeds for Arbor Day. Students learned the importance of taking care of the Earth, not only for themselves but for future generations. They were all excited to plant, care for, and watch their trees grow for many years to come. American Heart Association representative Linda Perez presented the St. Lucie County School District an award at the January 22, 2013, school board meeting recognizing the district as a Fit-Friendly company. The national recognition is presented for organizations promoting health and wellness. The Port St.Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion held its annual Military Ball recently at the Port St. Lucie Community Center. The Military Ball is an event in which cadets participate in a formal dining-out, followed by an informal dance. To begin the events, cadets and their guests proceeded through a receiving line and were greeted by the cadet leadership, led by Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Mabry and Cadet Command Sergeant Major Byron Cruz. The Jaguar Battalion of Port St. Lucie High School participated in the annual parade honoring one of America’s greatest civil rights leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Jaguar Battalion received many accolades from the spectators during the event. The battalion was led by Battalion Commander Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Mabry, followed by the battalion Color Guard, the battalion staff and the three companies with their professionalism. Through the dedication of the cadets and the leadership of the senior cadets, the Jaguar Battalion remained loud and proud throughout the parade. Pictured are the cadets during the parade.
Ft. Pierce Westwood Army JROTC Panther Battalion led their school in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during the annual MLK parade in Ft Pierce. The 74 Cadets of the battalion were led by Cadet Battalion Commander Maynali Gamez and were accompanied by the color guard, company guidon bearers and an Army High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) from the 1218th Transportation Company of the Florida National Guard. Fourth grade students in Kim Yoder’s class at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School celebrated mathematical success with ice cream sundaes. Fourth graders have been completing multiplication quick quizzes and post tests throughout the year demonstrating skill, accuracy, and speed. Those students who possess those qualities were rewarded with an ice cream sundae buffet. With over 20 different toppings, bowls were piled high with sweet rewards for sweet success. Newly seated St. Lucie County Commissioner Kim Johnson and wife Sharita Johnson were entertaining masters of ceremony for the annual parade on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on 25th Street in Fort Pierce. The parade highlighted a 10-day celebration, which included a spelling bee, oratory contest, and candlelight parade. Schools, community groups, fraternal organizaitons and local businesses paraded down 25th Street displaying their renditions of the year’s theme, “Reach Beyond the Dream.”
St Lucie West Centennial High school Navy Junior ROTC cadets presented the colors at the recent Treasure Coast Navy League Dinner honoring 95 year old Rear Admiral William Jenkins. Admiral Robert J. Papp, the Commandant of the Coast Guard, lauded Admiral Jenkins for his many years of outstanding service to the nation. Northport K-8 students in Pam Mishler’s first grade class and Lisa Cash’s sixth grade class made new friends all in the name of literacy recently when the students paired up to prepare for the school’s vocabulary parade. Students used words from their reading text for the year to make vocabulary costumes and hand made signs to wear in the parade to celebrate words. Northport K-8 School kindergarteners in Melody Nieves’ class shared with a room full of parents the many reading and writing skills that they have acquired throughout the school year. Students shared Gingerbread books that illustrated an excellent use of beginning, middle and ending for a story plot, good use of punctuation and started each sentence with a capital letter. Students also demonstrated a working knowledge of shapes by reading a sentence that each wrote using shapes such as circle, square, rectangle, triangle and rhombus. Students in Colleen Wilson’s sixth grade science class at Forest Grove Middle worked on a class science project, “Can you protect a falling egg?” Students created “protectors” for their eggs out of different materials with the goal of dropping an egg from the second story balcony and ensuring that the egg arrived on the ground unharmed. Northport K-8 School students in June Wilson’s seventh grade math class exercised their creativity by reproducing scale models of furniture in their classroom. Students learned proportion, similarity, scale drawing, perimeter and area of similar figures. Students utilized bridge maps for clarification of similarities. At the completion of the project, students were able to compute the perimeter and areas of their models to the actual objects by using the scale factor. Mrs. Wilson stated that students were thrilled to be learning math skills with a hands-on approach and social interactions were a positive influence on student output.
Students in Shirley Helton’s fifth grade class at Fairlawn Elementary took top honors in the VFW (Veteran’s of Foreign Wars) essay contest promoting citizenship and patriotism. Jillian Markle, left, placed first in the district and Sariah Strunk came in second. They won for the district and will go on to the state competition. Congratulations!
Northport K-8 lower school students proved their domination over hundreds of words by participating in a vocabulary parade recently. Students poured over lists of words from their texts and chose words that appealed to each, then made posters, signs, decorations and costumes declaring the definitions, the synonyms, antonyms, correct spelling and use of the words in sentences. All students used the book “Miss Alaineus” by Debra Frasier as a road map to comprehension.
