Allapattah Flats Kindergarteners Learn to Use Kagan Structures!

The Kindergarten students in Mr. Zakrajsek’s class are shown working hard. They are using a Dr. Spencer Kagan strategy called Rally-Robin to orally communicate the rules and expectations to their friends. The students have also used this strategy to meet their new friends and describe themselves to one another. Allapattah Flats K8 teacher festively reinforces PBS expectations

Second grade students’ behavior in Sherrie McLemore’s class is reinforced through the “Gift Giving Tree.” As the students are following the PBS school-wide expectations of Responsibility, Safety and Respect they receive positive praise and are given a Gator Buck. When they receive two Gator Bucks they may trade them in for a gift ticket which go into a jar and the teacher randomly draws tickets throughout the day. Allapattah Flats K8 students use role play to solve problems

Students in Bridget Valinote’s reading class at Allapattah Flats K8 used role play to identify conflict, evaluate evidence and solve problems. Using the short story “Louisa Please Come Home,” students took turns acting as a crisis counselor and a runaway teen. Students evaluated evidence to support a variety of viewpoints in the story. Allapattah Flats K8 students rewarded for community service

Students at Allapattah Flats recently held a food drive for families in need for the Thanksgiving break. Students were asked to bring in canned and boxed food items over a one week period.  The classes with the most participation were rewarded with a pancake breakfast prepared by Principal Patti Galloway and served by Assistant Principals Casandra Flores and Ana Rodriguez. Susan Funari’s second grade class won for the primary grades and the students were delighted to be served at their desks, partaking in the home made pancakes covered in syrup used to create hearts, stars, and smiley faces for a little extra cheer. Pictured, from left, … Read More

Seventh grade students in Christi Pittman’s classes at Allapattah Flats K-8 School are learning about the Civil Rights Movement in language arts.  After listening to Martin Luther King Junior’s “I Have a Dream” speech in its entirety, students were impressed with his eloquence and use of “big words.” Inspired, the students wrote their own “I Have a Dream” paragraph about what they would like to see changed in their community, state, country, or world. Allapattah Flats K8 students move to the music

This week in music class at Allapattah Flats K-8, students listened to a piece called “Gallop” from The Comedians composed by Dimitri Kabalevsky. The instructional focus was on “form,” the structure of a musical composition as it can be divided into different sections. Teacher Danya Etter made the activity exciting by not only adding movements for the different sections of the piece, but also had streamers to make the lesson a hit! Joe Smith, Clerk of Circuit Court of St. Lucie County, spoke to first grade students recently at Allapattah Flats K8. Mr. Smith explained his role in the community and the upcoming election. Allapattah Flats K8 students find surface area of shapes

It’s not their birthday, but students Jayda Hill, left, and Heather White in Amy Redding’s seventh grade math class at Allapattah Flats K8 School are using wrapped boxes to find the surface area of prisms.  Students measured several boxes and were able to compare the surface areas of the three-dimensional shapes.

Allapattah Flats K8 student aces putting challenge at PGA

Students at Allapattah Flats K8 School participated in the Spring “Golf In Our Schools” program through PGA. The five-week tournament wrapped up with a skills challenge at PGA. Alexis Allen, a fourth grade Allapattah Flats student, won first place in the putting skills challenge. Congratulations Alexis! 

Allapattah Flats K8 Rad Recyclers

Ms. Marino’s RTI group of 2nd graders learned about recycling with Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful last week by finding and picking up items that could be recycled from their school grounds. Thank you to #KPSLB for lending us the grabbers to be used in this lesson.

Allapattah Flats K8 paperback library enjoyed by enthusiastic students ready to read

Allapattah Flats middle grades students are very excited as they celebrated their paperback library’s reopening this school year.  It is now home to over 1,300 books with multiple copies of most titles.  New additions also include comfortable furniture and rugs so that students can relish in this comfortable, inviting setting while we stay committed to fostering and instilling a love for reading as shown with this group of eighth grade students, Francisco Andrade, Niva Guerrier, Omari Cobb, Corey Lewis, Precious Joseph and Chris Cliff.

Allapattah Flats K8 holds student led conferences

Allapattah Flats K8 recently held student led conferences with every child on campus in kindergarten through eighth grade. Parents attended conferences where the students had the opportunity to take the lead. Students presented their academic data as well as goals they set for themselves throughout the semester. They shared work samples, projects, and assessments that allowed parents to see what they do in class as well as track their progress over the course of the nine weeks. Science vocabulary words came to life at Allapattah Flats K-8 on January 27th! Elementary students and staff had fun and remained safe as they marched in outdoor parades. Everyone enjoyed showing off the words they learned by dressing up or sharing their display boards. We had a great time coming together to celebrate science and literacy!

Allapattah Flats K-8 students learn about plant reproduction

Allapattah Flats K-8 students in Edwina Taylor’s fourth grade classroom are currently learning about the life cycle of plants and plant reproduction. Each student was given a flower to examine, so that they could label the parts of the flower. Then, the students created a Brace Map to separate the plant from whole to part. Community members came out to Allapattah Flats K8 School recently to share their love of reading with kindergarten through fourth grade students who were fortunate to see members of local law enforcement, school district officials, and even some familiar retirees at this event. Allapattah Flats K-8 presents student led conferences

Allapattah Flats K-8 students recently held their own student-led conferences, proudly showing off their work for the first nine weeks of school. During these conferences, students were able to show a parent or staff member their academic performance on things such as their classroom work and grades, benchmark scores, and progress for the first quarter. Students also discussed how they achieved their grades, what grades they plan to get next quarter, and their plan to improve academically. Students in Ms. Neel’s middle school art class collaborated to create this large‑scale figure in recognition of Black History Month. This project provided students with an opportunity to engage in meaningful artistic expression while reflecting on the importance of Black history and culture. Through careful planning, creativity, and teamwork, students transformed their ideas into a visually powerful piece that represents both artistic skill and thoughtful learning. The completed figure stands as a symbol of respect, celebration, and educational growth. On Wednesday, October 29th, Allapattah Flats K-8 celebrated its annual Storybook Character Day, a fun PBIS event for the entire school. Students and teachers were invited to dress as their favorite storybook characters, and K-5 students proudly showed off their costumes during a parade.
