Allapattah Flats students learn about overcoming obstacles through Stella the Whale

Kindergarten through second grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 School recently were visited by Wyland Foundation, along with Stella the Whale.  Stella is a near life size canvas painting of a baby right whale. Students got to take part in a unique exercise in goal setting to help Stella migrate 700 miles from one end of the state to the other. Allapattah Flats students learn about local agriculture

Third grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 School recently got up close and personal with Florida’s native wildlife and ecosystem on a trip to the 4-H Farm. Students were able to view gardens, rain barrels, and hydroponics. Cows and donkeys were just some of the animals students were able to touch. In the herb garden, students were educated on how herbs are used in cooking as well as being able to smell the various herbs. Pictured are Trey Devercelly, left, and Hannah Hudson.

Allapattah Flats students learn about healthy eating

First graders at Allapattah Flats K-8 enjoyed a visit from the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast to learn about nutrition and healthy eating habits.  Students learned about the food pyramid, healthy eating, and the importance of exercise.  Isabelle Veloz, from Ann Hartman’s first grade class, enjoyed making her very own yogurt parfait with the help of Joyce Thomasson from the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast.  Eagerly waiting their turn to make some yogurt are Cordelia Raeburn and Antonio Alves.

Allapattah Flats students learn about energy conservation

Students in grades kindergarten, first, and second grade at Allapattah Flats K-8 School watched a special performance titled “Men in Plaid: The Kilowatt Connection.” The performance was put on by The National Theatre for Children and it was sponsored by Florida Power and Light. The performers conveyed important messages to students about energy conservation in order to make the world a better place. Pictured, from left, are Kaylee Harris from Kylee Dvorak’s second grade class and visiting performers Zack and Nate.

Third grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 have been learning about different forms of energy in science class. Students in Shannon Johnson’s class went to the science lab to learn more about potential and kinetic energy. Science teacher Joseph Kline instructed students to experiment with different heights of a ramp to test the objects’ potential and kinetic energy. Students rolled a tennis ball down a ramp at different heights towards a funnel and then measured how far the funnel moved. All students at Flats K-8 recently led conferences with their parents and other caring adults. They shared things they have learned, things they still need help on and what kind of learning helps them most. Allapattah Flats students hold student led conferences

Allapattah Flats middle grades students recently held first-ever student-led conferences in their reading classes.  These conferences provided an opportunity for the students to reflect upon their successes during the year and show their data binders, which included their tests scores and academic work with their parents.  This was a positive opportunity for the students to emphasize their strengths, acknowledge their challenges, and with their parents’ support, plan their approach for the next semester. Students did a great job communicating with their families about their education and goals. Allapattah Flats Students: Highly Engaged

Allapattah Flats K-8 Second Graders are bursting with text features in informational texts! Students are paired with partners to rotate around the room with non-fiction texts. Students took turns answering questions about specific text features such as captions, subheadings, and bold key words. Students gave examples of each text feature, how it helped them, and where they found them within the text.

Allapattah Flats students get up close with wildlife

First grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 recently enjoyed had a up-close look at Florida wildlife.  Cheryl Wise of Busch Wildlife brought an opossum, turtle, corn snake, and an owl to the school. First graders learned facts about Florida wildlife and their habitats. Pictured are Tyler Garren,right, and Henos Yonas from Ann Hartman’s first grade class. They were brave first graders to touch “Sweet Potato” the corn snake. What a great visit!

Allapattah Flats students get up close with sea life

Second grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 School recently had the opportunity to visit the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center in Stuart. Students enjoyed learning about the many unique coastal treasures that are showcased at the center. Students were able to touch a variety of sea animals including stingrays, horseshoe crabs, sea stars, and sea urchins and saw lagoon fish, sea turtles, and even a nurse shark! They are looking forward to hopefully returning back to the center with their families during the summer. Allapattah Flats students get hands on physics lessons

Students at Allapattah Flats K8 students received enjoyed a scientific as well as fun special visitor recently. District Science Curriculum Coordinator Steve Shotola came to work with eighth grade students in Joseph Kline’s class with his amazing golf ball launcher. Students calculated the speed, velocity, and time it took for golf balls to be launched from the high powered launcher. The students had a great time as well as using math and science in a hands on and real world scenario. This is one lesson they won’t soon forget.

Allapattah Flats students enjoy reading classic children’s book

Second grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 School are reading the Caldecott Award-winning novel “Charlotte’s Web.” While studying this great piece of literature, students will be completing circle maps on the characters, acting out the vocabulary words, and writing a synopsis of the chapters. Students are enchanted with the characters in the book and are eager to learn the outcome. Allapattah Flats students dig into fourth quarter and welcome “quacky” classmates

Students at Allapattah Flats K8 worked diligently on FCAT skills as they prepared for the test, and will continue to keep up their brisk pace as they dig into the fourth quarter.  In science, students will be working on a variety of topics, like physical and chemical changes, forms of energy, heat, sound, and motion.  In math, students are beginning to dive into an introduction to fifth grade skills that will prepare them for their move into the next grade.  To top it all off, fourth grade students had some excitement as they welcomed their new classmates. Allapattah Flats students design area robots

As part of the GOMATH program at Allapattah Flats K8, fourth graders have been learning how to calculate the area of two-dimensional shapes. They started out estimating the area of given shapes, then used various strategies like counting, multiplying, and using mathematical formulas to find the area of complex shapes. Students especially loved solving problems that relate to real world situations. To engage the students, they were given an activity that involved drawing their own uniquely, designed robot on grid paper and finding the area. It was a chance for the fourth graders to show both their creativity and understanding of math skills. … Read More

Allapattah Flats students create atoms in science class

Students in Joe Kline’s eighth grade science classes at Allapattah Flats K-8 have been recently studying atoms. The students completed a hands-on science lab where they created atoms from clay. Students had to create the protons, neutrons, and electrons. In addition, they are building their own periodic table using their own elements — all while calculating the important parts of the atom. Allapattah Flats’ Students Connect with North Carolina Aquarium

Students in Ms. Mellion’s 2nd grade classroom have been learning all about life cycles of animals and plants. They were able to use Skype to connect with Ms. Samantha Betancur of the North Carolina Aquarium to learn even more! Students were engaged in an online Skype presentation about Sea Turtles, their life cycle, and threats. After meeting a real life Loggerhead Turtle, students were swimming with information and excited for future Skype education!  

Allapattah Flats students celebrate thanks with a hopeful twist

Eighth grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 School recently created traditional Thanksgiving native headpieces with a twist with the Kids at Hope philosophy as a twist. After reflecting on the four destinations of Kids at Hope — home and family, community and service, hobbies and recreation, and education and career — students listed what they were hopeful for, and then wrote down one reflection per feather. Allapattah Flats students celebrate Mother’s Day

The third grade students at Allapattah Flats K-8 celebrated Mother’s Day by decorating their own heart shaped Mother’s Day cakes. The cakes, including the frosting and sprinkles, were provided by the school’s business partners at Publix Super Market. Students enjoyed decorating their own cakes and were even able to add their own special touch with a unique Mother’s Day card.
