Did the groundhog see his shadow?  Kathy Offerdahl’s kindergarten students at F.K. Sweet Elementary predicted whether or not Punxsutawney Phil would see his shadow.  They made their own groundhogs ‘pop’ out of their ‘burrows’ to share with their families.

September in kindergarten has been such a busy month!  Did you know what you will find if you cut open an apple? Isaiah Brickles-Jackson was pleasantly surprised to find a star!  Students in Melanie Francisco’s class studied apples while learning the properties of matter.  After reading about Johnny Appleseed, students turned apples into applesauce.  They practiced patience while they worked in their classroom all day smelling the delicious aroma.  At the end of the day, they were able to taste it.  The applesauce was fabulous!

During literacy centers, Kira Kim and Adrian Perez from Michelle O’Keefe’s kindergarten class at F.K. Sweet Elementary School had a great time cooperating in the puppet center. They worked hard developing a story with their puppets while friends watched and enjoyed the show. Students in Kristin Griffin’s kindergarten class at F. K. Sweet Elementary love learning about different cultures. After learning about the Chinese New Year celebrations, the students were able to try some authentic Chinese dumplings. After trying out their chopsticks on Fruit Loops, Janya Baptiste, left, and Alex Sgouris were ready for the delicious dumplings.

The kindergarten students at F.K. Sweet Elementary School were surprised with a visit from Kauff’s Towing while studying about Community Helpers. Teachers and students learned all of the responsibilities that the drivers have. Quiana Lundy, from left, Shanyla Osby, Jeffery Stephens, Josiah Fullwood, and Dennis Scott from Melanie Francisco’s class loved listening to kindergarten parent Dennis Scott explain the tools on the huge “wrecker” truck.

After learning about the celebrations that take place during Chinese New Year, Kristin Griffin’s kindergarten class at Frances K. Sweet Elementary enjoyed eating traditional Chinese foods. They feasted on dumplings that symbolize togetherness in the coming year and stir-fried rice that represents harmony and happiness.  Nicole Williams and Terry McQueen show their classmates how to eat withchopsticks.

After a week of studying and comparing fairy tales, kindergartners at F. K. Sweet Elementary

At Frances K. Sweet Elementary, media specialist Genie DuPell is sharing a variety of books by author Mo Willems with the kindergarten classes. Pictured, from left, Ireland Wagerer, Madison Paul, Jeremiah Hill, and Lennon Paquette are holding books and stuffed animals from two of his most popular books, “The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!” and “Knuffle Bunny”. In the school media center, there are 38 books by Mo Willems available to check out by students.

Kindergartners at F.K. Sweet Elementary wrapped up their unit on fairy tales by having a Fairy Tale Feast.  Students loved tasting delicious treats as they engaged in lessons on several of their favorite stories.  Classes enjoyed snacks such as pigs in a blanket for the Three Little Pigs, Snow White’s applesauce, and gingerbread cookies for the Gingerbread Man.  You can see by the smiles how students in Melanie Francisco’s class had a blast dressing up as their favorite fairy tale characters.  

Kindergartners in Melanie Francisco’s class at F. K. Sweet Elementary School have been anyalyzing two and three-dimensional shapes to name parts and describe their attributes. Pictured, from left, are Elliott Gardner, La Teya Weathers, Quiana Lundy, and Dennis Scott found shapes as the class created a classifying map.

Students in Melanie Francisco’s kndergarten class at F. K. Sweet Elementary School loved exploring apples using all five of their senses. Students observed and recorded how the apples looked, felt, smelled, sounded, and tasted. They graphed their favorite apple and wrapped up the unit by making applesauce. Pictured, Elliot Garder turns the crank as Santino Stevens and others look on in anticipation as to what will happen to the apple.

Students in Melanie Francisco and Michelle O’Keefe’s kindergarten classes at F. K. Sweet Elementary recently enjoyed throwing a Florida snowball. After studying a unit on snow and winter, the students went outside and engaged in a snowball fight using white yarn pom poms.

Kindergartners at F. K. Sweet Elementary School recently took a field trip to see the Nutcracker Ballet at the Sunrise Theater in downtown Fort Pierce. The Sunrise Theater offered a free field trip for students in St. Lucie County schools. Frances K. Sweet kindergartners recently celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday! Students in Melanie Francisco’s class loved having Frankie Lott read “Marvin K. Mooney, Will You Please Go Now?”  Mr. Lott is the president of the Kiwanis group who sends guest readers to Frances K. Sweet every year.  The students enjoyed activity packets and goody bags.

Kindergartners in Morgan Haupt’s Class at Frances K. Sweet Magnet School related to the Little Red Hen’s lesson about working together in order to enjoy the final product.   The students helped their teacher make cupcakes and then they were able to frost them and eat them as a reward for their efforts. Kindergarten students in Mrs. Morgan Haupt’s class have had a busy week investigating spiders. Students learned the parts of a spider as well as their habitats.  For a culminating activity students made spider hats to wear home. Showing off their hats are, left to right, Ty’Shawn Moore, Samara Rawlings, Kyra Burton, and Camryn Monroe.

Kindergarten students at F.K.Sweet Magnet School invited their families to school for a Thanksgiving breakfast.  The students sang songs, brought in food to share, and dressed up like Pilgrims and Native Americans. Charlotte Sellers from Morgan Haupt’s class was joined by her parents, grandparents and sisters for the special event.

F K Sweet kindergarteners would like to invite YOU to their circus. You can watch the fearless Lion Tamer and the daredevils on the high-wire! The kindergarteners of Frances K Sweet have yet again proved that they can truly perform the Greatest Show on Earth. Students were everything from clowns, lions, elephants, jugglers, to tightrope walkers. Students entertained their families and members of the community.
