Students at Fort Pierce Westwood’s Marine and Oceanographic Academy are making a difference in the local community! The Leadership class at M.O.A. organized the food drive encouraging the campus to bring in food donations. The student body overwhelmingly responded with a grand total of 1,669 food items collected — all of which are being donated to the Treasure Coast Food Bank. Awesome job, Panthers, on the successful food drive!

Samuel S. Gaines Academy sixth graders had the honor of listening to guest speaker Mr. Joe Smith, Clerk of the Circuit Court of St. Lucie County, as he shared his life story during a recent Speakers Bureau event. Mr. Smith, a native of Fort Pierce and a product of the St. Lucie Public Schools, comes from immigrant grandparents who arrived in the United States in the early 1900s. On Tuesday November 22, 2016, Lincoln Park Academy Middle School students participated in the annual Pathway to Success ceremony.  Whether it’s the youngest Greyhounds in the class of 2024 or the voting-age seniors who graduate in May, all students deserve to know they inspire adults around them.  The students received a keepsake to commemorate the ceremony and signed a graduate silhouette ensuring their commitment to be successful at LPA which is displayed proudly on campus.  Great job, Greyhounds…and keep up the hard work!              

On November 9th, there was a celebration for three Lincoln Park Academy seniors.  Each of them have committed to the college or university of their choice to further their education and athletic excellence. The families, faculty, and staff of Weatherbee Elementary recently collected and filled over 100 shoeboxes with much needed health care supplies for our neighbors in hurricane stricken Haiti and Bahamas.  Mrs. Guermithe Ogé and Mrs. Darlene Sydné coordinated the collection drive.

Fourth graders in Ms. Erica Morales’ class at Mariposa Elementary enjoyed playing the role of the math teacher. “Ms. Owens, and Mr. Orozco” guided their fellow classmates in multiplying two digit by two digit numbers using the Matrix Model. Recently at St. Lucie West Centennial High School, the 19th Judicial Circuit held Teen Court. Criminal Justice students from Fort Pierce Central, Fort Pierce Westwood, St. Lucie West Centennial, and Treasure Coast High Schools prepared and presented defense and prosecution cases. Students also served as jurors, bailiff, Clerk of the Court, and audience members for three cases involving teens.

Fort Pierce Central culinary students and their instructors joined over 40 Florida high schools at the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association Educational Foundation (FRLAEF) Regional workshop at Johnson and Wales University (JWU)  in Miami, Florida. Students rotated through four sessions including: knife skills, trends in baking and pastry, Molecular Gastronomy, and trends in nutrition. Lunch was then served to everyone in the JWU cafe, and each student received a personal chef jacket for attending the event. An exciting and very educational day was had by all!

At Weatherbee, we recently celebrated the end of our latest Reading Challenge. Classes that met their reading points goal were treated to watching our principal and assistant principal get doused with gravy!! The students who earned the highest amount of points in each class did the honors of pouring a cup of gravy over our literary pilgrims – a.k.a. Mr. Hitsman and Ms. Avellino.

Olive Garden sponsored an event honoring student athletes at SLW Centennial High School.  Student athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and higher were recognized for their academic achievements.  The top two students who both have a 4.0 cumulative GPA include Cameron Pagan (pictured on left), 10th grade, Volleyball Team and Nalin Saraf (pictured on right), 10th grade, Cross Country Team .

This exhibit showcases the work of the Creative Photography students from Fort Pierce Central High School. The school added photography courses four years ago, and in that time Heather Blackmon-Gordon’s students have grown in both skill and scope. With photography as their commonality, they search for their own creative style and vision. The students have spent the last few months documenting, critiquing and reflecting on physical and mental places in their lives. The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Raider Team traveled to South Fork High School to compete in the Area III Regional Raider Meet State qualifier. They competed against 22 teams from nine other schools in five physically demanding events. The events consisted of Cross Country Rescue (team had to answer questions on first aid, treat a simulated 120lb casualty with supplies from 30lb ruck sacks, and then move the casualty and supplies one mile to the safe zone), 100 meter 300lb tire flip. Students in Mrs. Saunders’ 5th grade at FPMSA researched, prepared, and presented projects on Pre-Columbian North Americans. Students created posters or dioramas to display the information they acquired. Classmates learned from each other and learned from the past. Realizing how landscape, climate, and resources shaped the customs and homes was evident in their work.

On Saturday November 5th, Caleb Pottorff won the 2A Cross Country State Meet.  Caleb ran the fastest 5K of the 728 male and female runners who participated.  Congratulations to Caleb! Your Lincoln Park Academy family is very proud of you.

Lincoln Park Academy’s Middle School Student Council is grateful to be assisting the effort to eliminate hunger within the community.  With the tremendous outpouring of effort from students and staff, LPA was able to donate    2 1/2 wagons of non-perishable food items to the Mustard Seed Ministry.        

During the November 22nd Organizational Meeting of the School Board, School Board Attorney Daniel B. Harrell administered the Oath of Office to School Board Member Carol A. Hilson (residing in District No. 2) and School Board Member Kathryn Hensley (residing in District No. 4). Both were re-elected to four year terms and will continue to proudly serve the students, staff, and community of St. Lucie County.

The School Board of St. Lucie County held an Organizational Meeting on November 22, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. in the School Board Room. During this meeting, Mr. Troy Ingersoll was elected Chairman and Dr. Donna Mills was elected Vice Chairman.

It was the pleasure of the Northport administration, teachers, and staff to host our monthly Speakers Bureau in partnership with Dr. Donna Mills, SLPS School Board Member recently. Each month, Northport along with several other schools, hosts guest speakers who encourage and motivate students to pull themselves up by the boot straps, make good choices, use positive role models and learn to find their passion and purpose in life.
