Don’t tell these F.K. Sweet Elementary kindergartners that they aren’t at the beach. They probably wouldn’t believe you because so much fun was had by all at the school’s annual Water Day recently. Fom left, Kierstyn Zinter, Brayden Adams, Antianna Mills, Alexia Moxley, and Keilah Magloire are taking a break from the water to enjoy building sand castles on the playground.

Jaime Hillaire, a seventh grade student at Allapattah Flats K8, received state, regional, and national recognition from the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for his entry in the Junior American Citizens contest. That’s quite an accomplishment for which he should be proud. Allapattah sends out a big congratulations to Jaime!

Twelve students at F.K. Sweet Elementary recently participated in the annual Sunshine Bowl. Four teams competed by answering questions about the 2011-2012 Sunshine Books. Some 38 students at F.K. Sweet Elementary read at least 15 Florida Sunshine Books and were treated to a “luau-themed” celebration of their success in the Media Center. Pictured are Lauren Nipper, left, and Kyla Pata enjoying the recognition.

The state finals, held May 24 in West Palm Beach, were the culmination of the nearly year-long effort by the class to identify and problem-solve a community public policy issue. The class Project Citizen project, “Vote to Make Fort Pierce Better: Voting Counts,” hopes to increase voter registration and voter participation in local, state, and national elections. The Windmill Point Elementary School Odyssey of the Mind team recently competed at the World finals event at Iowa State University. It was a creative extravaganza where more than 800 teams from all around the world shared their ideas and work. The Windmill Point teacm competed against 51 others from around the world, and placed ninth overall for Division 1, Problem #2- Weird Science. Alex Cardenal from Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition, along with his classmates, hugs one of the dogs from the Star Bright Therapy reading program. To the left of Alex is one of the volunteers from the program,  behind him is behavior technician Neil Siriani, and to his right is teacher Tammy Miller. Volunteers come with the dogs to Palm Pointe once a week for 45 minutes to read with the students. This helps students improve their reading skills. Northport K-8 student Finnegan Carey reaped the rewards of using the writing process effectively, adhering to the school rubric, correctly using dynamic illustrations and producing a relevant and substantial piece of writing. Finn and his parents, Jennifer and Nick Carey, pictured above, celebrated at the school district’s Young Author Showcase recently along with fellow Northport students Saige Searcy, Jazz Courtenay, Samantha Huynh, Paul Brinker, Joseph Ybarra, Giovanni Wright and Raena Davis. Over 175 student authors from across the district and their families were treated to a visit with author Donna Gephart, who wrote the book “How To Survive Middle School”, the district’s … Read More

Eighth grade students from Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition, pictured from left, John Rimes, Michael Williams and Michael Lyons prepare to launch their rockets that they made as projects for Thomas Carr’s science class. This project incorporated both math skills and science. The students had fun learning how to make the rockets and then watch as they launched their finished projects. 

Northport K-8 students from the Northstar team were selected to present at this year’s Project Citizen Oral Hearings held recently at the Palm Beach Coounty Convention Center. Three of the five teams presenting were from St. Lucie County and two were from Miami-Dade County. The team from Northport K-8 School represented Mary Ellsworth’s sixth period class with their project, “Put Down the Fork and Pick Up the Pace.” The project centered around the issue of childhood obesity and how schools can help combat this increasing problem. With support from Northport administration, the PTO, Building Level Planning team, cafeteria staff and coaches, students were … Read More

Port St. Lucie High School honored its graduating seniors at the recent Senior Scholarship Night event. Collectively, the graduating Jaguars earned over $2,971,934 dollars in scholarships from colleges and universities. It has been a fun week for students at Gaines Academy with field days and the many activities Coach Camarotti and Coach Ellinger prepared.  Students from Andrea Blackburn’s fourth grade class are pictured preparing for the beach day relay. Pictured with beach gear in hand ready to begin the race are Ledarius Sirmons and Elijah Similien.

Students and families recently visited many countries while traveling around the world at Gaines Academy. Pictured with passports in hand are second grade student Jason Jacques in Mikki Greer’s class, and his sister Jennifer, a kindergartner in Leigh Chesney’s class upon arriving in Egypt, where they encounter a camel created by eighth graders in Paul Small’s class. They also saw a pyramid with mummies inside and hieroglyphic prints.

Fairlawn Elementary School fifth grade teacher Shirley Helton has been named the Distinguished Stock Market Challenge Advisor of the Year for the State of Florida for demonstrating excellence in teaching economics skills of free enterprise and financial literacy. Each year, the Florida Council on Economic Education and Publix Super Markets Charities recognize a Distinguished Stock Market Advisor who goes above and beyond in teaching children about how financial markets work, how to invest money, and entrepreneurship.  Helton’s fifth grade students this year won first place in the state Stock Market Challenge Elementary Division in the Fall Competition and second place in the state Spring … Read More

Students in John Davino’s seventh grade civics class at Samuel S. Gaines Academy created their own review board games to study for their upcoming final exam. The Palm Pointe symphonic band recently travelled to Atlanta, Georgia, to participate in a private clinic at Georgia State University held by the university’s band director. While they were there they were able to tour the CNN television studios and view a live taping. Some of their other activities included visiting the Coca Cola corporation museum as well as visiting the world’s largest aquarium. Students gained memorable experiences that will last a lifetime.
