This time-honored celebration of distinguished service men and women is held on the school’s campus located at 1400 Avenue Q in Fort Pierce. Event organizers Helena Grapsy, Tammy Davis, and Barbara Bennett encourage veterans interested in participating in the ceremony to meet ten minutes prior to the 9 AM kick-off in order to line up for a parade of appreciation that will wind through the FKS campus.
The JROTC cadets from Fort Pierce Westwood High School will open the ceremony with the presentation of colors followed by remarks from a special guest speaker. After the ceremony, there will be a campus tour of patriotic-themed displays. Honored guests will then enjoy a special breakfast prepared by FKS’s cafeteria staff.

On May 16th, 25 students in grades 2-5 competed in White City’s Spelling Bee. After nine rounds fifth grader Isaiah Alonso won first place. Fourth grader Nicholas Telicien won 2nd place and third grader Adrian Lopez won third place. All students received a medal and certificate.
The PBIS team of Samuel S. Gaines Academy is striving to engage kids in positive behaviors. When students follow the “SGA Way” which is the school-wide expectations to Stay Safe, Give Respect and Act Responsibly, they earn “Colt Cash.” Colt Cash can be used for special events and “Chance to Win” drawings. The PBIS team sponsors monthly drawings for grade groups K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Each group contains items donated by school personnel or community partners. Some of this month’s featured items are an ice cream social, play time in the SGA game room, extra recess time, teddy bears, art kits, sunglasses, gift cards, and more! Students found out what it was like to be a nurse during a hospital tour at Tradition Medical Center in Port St. Lucie. For these Port St. Lucie High School students, a day in the life of a nurse was a valuable experience.

The Indian River Lagoon Science Festival is holding satellite events throughout the Treasure Coast.
What do a tour of a world-famous orange juice plant, a paddle through Florida’s history, and a plant sale by Florida Master Gardeners have in common? They’re all part of five weeks of satellite events leading up to the fifth annual Indian River Lagoon Science Festival! The satellite events celebrate the scientist in everyone with S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) programs and activities for a variety of ages and interests. This year’s Indian River Lagoon Science Festival takes place on Saturday, October 27 at Veteran’s Memorial Park at the River Walk Center in Fort Pierce.

Check-in begins at 7:30am at the U.S. Sailing Center in Jensen Beach, with the paddle starting promptly at 8:00am. The group will paddle across the Lagoon to the FOS shoreline for a breakfast of grits and clams. Port Saint Lucie High School cadets were honored to provide a saber guard when Army Specialist Gonzalez and his family were awarded with their new home. Army Specialist Gonzalez, a Port Saint Lucie veteran, lost his sight and suffered severe brain injuries in an IED explosion in 2004. The home was designed for his loss of sight with handrails and textured floors. Cadet Major Julian Taft, Cadet Staff Sergeant Travis Cetin, Cadet Sergeant Major Adam Pagan, Cadet Captain Kaylee Zuidema, Cadet Command Sergeant Major Jamie Triplett, and Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Crystal Ortiz enjoyed the ceremony and listening to the key note speakers. At the end of the ceremony the saber arch was created for the family to walk through before walking into their new house for the first time. Congratulations to Specialist Gonzalez and his family for their new house.
For the second year in a row, Marta Almiron’s kindergarten class at West Gate K8 has written to the President of the United States and he has replied. The students are studying animals of the Arctic and wanted to bring the plight of endangered polar bears to the attention of President Obama. The students were very excited to receive interesting materials about the White House as well as a letter and an autographed picture from the president himself! The Port St. Lucie High School (PSLHS) Jaguar Cafeteria is undergoing a facelift. The school’s mascot is boosting school spirit around campus and what better place to make an impact than in the cafeteria!

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) Superintendent E. Wayne Gent posed the question to students in Mrs. Myers’ 3rd grade Bayshore Elementary School classroom, “What did you do this summer?” What he heard from eight-year-old Christine Regina was a heroic recount of this young student’s quick thinking that helped save a young boy from drowning.
With calm and quiet self-assurance, Regina explained to the Superintendent and her classmates what occurred on a summer day in June while visiting her grandparents in Margate, Florida. During an under-water exploration of the city’s swimming pool, Regina noticed a boy at the bottom of the pool. “He wasn’t moving, and he looked like he needed someone to help him,” she said. Looking for support, Regina swam to the nearest person, a teenage girl, who was able to pull the boy from the bottom of the pool and take him to the pool’s side where lifeguards then resuscitated him. “It made me feel good to know I helped someone,” said Regina.
That does not come as a surprise to Principal Lori Reid who said, “That’s Christine Regina. She is such a great student — always interested in determining how she can provide service to others. I would describe her as an incredibly kind-hearted young lady.” Regina’s classmate echoed that sentiment, as she told the Superintendent that the next book the class reads should be a book entitled, Christine Saves the World.
Regina and her companion good Samaritan were heroes that day in June. They were both recognized by the city of Margate for their quick action that led to saving the life of a six-year-old boy.

With the support of Larry Lee Jr. State Farm Agency, Big Apple Pizza, The Van Duzer Foundation, Peter W. Busch, St. Lucie County, and the Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County, the community came together to celebrate the accomplishments of St. Lucie Public Schools and kick off the start to another banner year.

St. Lucie Elementary School students felt a storm of excitement as they learned about air masses, tornadoes, and hurricanes during a visit from Meteorologist Cris Martinez this week. Each month, the WBPF personality visits schools in St. Lucie County to share information with students on weather and how it impacts them. He is always a big hit!
SLPS Social Worker Kate McCormic was recognized by the Sheriff’s Office for her outstanding work with a local family in the fall. She, in collaboration with the SRD and two others, worked to locate a student who was truant, provide food for the family, and provide support services.
After being stationed in Italy as a Commander in the Navy for the past nine months, Mr. Kyle Croce visited his kindergarten daughter Aria and first grade daughter Caroline during their lunch at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition. What a wonderful welcome back surprise; there wasn’t a dry eye in the house!
