Garber Fundraiser: Drive for Education at FPW (11/3)

On Saturday November 3, test drive a new Buick and help Fort Pierce Westwood High School (FPWHS) located at 1801 Panther Lane in Fort Pierce, receive up to $10,000. Garber Buick GMC in Ft. Pierce will have new Buick vehicles at the school for this Test Drive Event from 8:00am-3:00pm. For each two-to-three minute test drive, Buick will donate $10.00.  When the event exceeds 100 test drives, Buick will double the donation to $20.00.  The goal is to reach the maximum donation of $10,000 for the day!

 

Participants will sign-in at the main entrance of FPWHS’s campus where they will have easy access to the test drive range.  Drivers must be 21 years of age or older and have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.  There is a limit of two donations per household.

 

Visitors to the campus will also benefit from the services of other community organizations such as the Sheriff’s Office with fingerprinting services for children, the Humane Society with on-site adoption opportunities, and the Health Department with flu vaccinations (first come, first served).

 

Principal Joseph Lezeau is eager to host the drive event.  “Garber Buick GMC is a remarkable community partner in education.  This event will help our school raise funds for extracurricular activities and competitions for students who are active in productions and competitions that take place far beyond the regular school day. Fundraisers like this help us provide the means for our students to showcase their talents at high level competitions and events.”

Dear St. Lucie County School District Employees:

Join the Healthy St. Lucie Coalition Billion Steps Challenge! This is a community-wide movement to increase physical activity and healthy living in St. Lucie County. As of October 24, 2018, we have 1,164 registered participants and 119 teams, representing 32 unique organizations including private business, local schools, Indian River State College, a variety of nonprofits, churches, neighborhoods, parks and recreation, healthcare, and city/county employees. Together we have accrued 723,594,847 steps. We need your help to achieve our goal!

This challenge is completely FREE, and is a great way to maintain your fitness goals, while sparking some healthy competition among coworkers, family or friends. Join now and help Healthy St. Lucie achieve our first goal of one billion steps by December 31, 2018, and then continue on with us into 2019 as we set our sights on the next goal.

Below, you will find information on how to register, form teams, enlist people to help and enroll in upcoming mini challenges. Let’s continue to work together as a community to get healthy and show the world that St. Lucie County is a healthy, active place to live, learn, work and play.

About Healthy St. Lucie

In June of 2015, the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County met with community partners to begin work on a Community Health Improvement Plan for 2016-2019. This meeting launched the Healthy St. Lucie Coalition to promote health where we live, learn, work, and play.

On January 1 of this year, the Healthy St. Lucie Coalition launched a Billion Steps Challenge to encourage residents in St. Lucie County to be more active. This challenge was initiated as a strategy for the 2016- 2019 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) to address our high sedentary rates in St. Lucie County.

 

Getting Started

Creating Your Account

Walker Tracker is the online activity tracking platform we are using to host the challenge. Complete your registration by clicking on the link https://healthystlucie.walkertracker.com/ to answer a few questions and set your personal goals. Walker Tracker will take you through the simple process of synching a device or how to manually track your activity. If you have a smart phone, there is a free Walker Tracker app you can download to stay on top of your progress while you are on the go.

Forming a Team

It is easy to form your own Team! Create a name and then invite others to join. Any registered participant from your organization can join one team, by selecting the TEAM tab on the Walker Tracker website. Before starting a team, please consider a name and how many teams you would like to form.

Naming Your Team

You can pick out any team name, but this system will only let you change it once. So, choose wisely! On your team page, you can post a logo or other graphic and add some information about your team. More teams at an organization creates more friendly competition to keep everyone motivated! If you decide on multiple teams, you may want to consider a naming convention that would allow you to see the teams from your organization. See examples below of teams the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County formed.

Aligning Your Team for Success

While you may be the “lead” on paper, you can’t do it all by yourself! Consider targeting some key movers to help your team succeed. Some examples:

 

Registration/Tech Lead

There is always at least one tech savvy person within any group, and your team will be no different. From registration on Walker Tracker to synching a device, some of your team members may need assistance along the way. If possible, try to recruit a tech savvy person to support your team.

 

Team Cheerleader

Every group seems to have that one person in the office that is always cheering everyone on. Find that person and let them work their magic on your team. They can help encourage members to join, keep members engaged, and find fun ways to help the group celebrate milestones along the way.

 

Mini Challenges

Keep the momentum going by competing in monthly virtual challenges within Walker Tracker to help participants set and reach new goals. Based on your current fitness level, there are 3 levels choose from

– the HOP, the DASH or the ULTRA. These challenges provide opportunities for teams to be creative (think costumes, healthy potlucks, homemade prizes) and have fun while getting fit. Individual winners for each mini challenge level will receive a prize from a local sponsor, as well as a certificate from the Healthy St. Lucie Coalition. Registered participants of the Billion Steps Challenge will receive a notification email from Walker Tracker with links to register for each mini challenge. November 15-28, 2018: Turkey Trot

We’re inviting you to stay active, healthy and have a lot of fun along the way in our Turkey Trot Challenge. This is a perfect fall time challenge and a great way to stay true to your fitness habits going into the holiday season. As you walk around the East Coast on the route (shaped like an actual turkey) you’ll discover the milestone pins along the route include health tips to reduce stress, eat better, and improve overall health.

 

December 5-18, 2018: Winter Wonderland, European Trek

This is a great winter adventure. Travel along a snowflake shared route as you hike through the land and sea of Viking ships, Norse warriors, and the Kraken! Some of the stops we’ll visit; Russia in time for the Nutcracker, Finland for a quick sauna break, Denmark to learn about the original Little Mermaid and check out the wonders of Iceland. The Pacer Viking Ship will lead the way!

The St. Lucie Public Schools Transportation fleet was utilized to highlight features on buses contributing to the safe transportation of students.

“School buses are known to be the safest method of transporting kids to school—70 times safer than traveling by car. School bus design improvements and a variety of safety products and technologies all contribute to helping school buses maintain this distinction. Industry insight gathered on safety incidents involving school buses, however, shows that being outside of the bus, in the “Danger Zone,” poses the highest risk to children.”

Florida Education Officials and Local Bookstores Partner to Help Hurricane-Impacted Schools…

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., October 29, 2018 – The Florida Department of Education, Florida Education Foundation (FEF) and independent booksellers across the state have joined together to host Re-book to Re-build: Hurricane Relief Fundraiser. A portion of sale proceeds on November 3 and 4 at participating bookstores will fund grants that will enable schools impacted by Hurricane Michael to re-stock their libraries and classrooms.

 

First Lady Ann Scott said, “For the past 8 years, I’ve had the privilege to promote literacy at Florida schools. Reading has always been important to our family, and I truly believe that a strong foundation of literacy is important for students to achieve their dreams and career goals. Since Hurricane Michael made landfall, my husband, Rick, has worked hard to get communities back on their feet. The Re-book to Re-build program is a wonderful opportunity to help impacted schools receive the resources necessary for students to succeed.”

Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart said, “Soon, all school districts will have reopened following Hurricane Michael, but many students’ schedules have been adjusted and school locations have changed. Florida educators at every level are working tirelessly to ensure a smooth return for students after having experienced unimaginable destruction, and these grants will be a great help. I am grateful to the participating booksellers, not only for their financial contributions, but for showing our students what it means to care for one another.”

Floridians are encouraged to visit one of the participating booksellers on Saturday, November 3 or Sunday, November 4, 2018. A percentage of sale proceeds will be invested in local literacy grants for school districts and educators to purchase books for schools impacted by Hurricane Michael. Those who are unable to visit one of the following locations can give a tax-deductible gift to the Florida Education Foundation.

Since 1989, National Young Readers Week has been an annual event held during the second week of November to raise awareness around the importance of reading. The event was co-founded by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

We are continuing our tradition of challenging principals across the country to become shining examples for literacy by choosing one day to read their heart out all day long, from first bell to the last during National Young Readers Week. Principals have risen to the challenge over the last several years reading everywhere from hallways, playgrounds and rooftops on their chosen school day. Choose your day. Each year, the Florida Council for the Social Studies honors educators across the state at their annual conference. Joe Curatolo (Treasure Coast High School), Heather Prince (Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition), and Jacqueline Baptiste-Harris (Village Green Environmental Studies School) were recognized at the 61st annual conference as the Outstanding Social Studies Teachers of the Year for St. Lucie County.
Administrators across the district nominated teachers from their schools to be considered for this honor.  Leadership and drive to bring quality lessons were qualities shared of these educators, and all are well deserving of this recognition.

St. Lucie Public Schools Outstanding Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year Named

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Wide smiles and tributes to the efforts of their school teams were the remarks that echoed from St. Lucie West Centennial High School Principal Andrea Popwell and Dan McCarty Middle School Assistant Principal Samantha Piscopo as they were surprised with the news that they are, respectively, this year’s Outstanding Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year for St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS).

“Outstanding school leaders set the pace for positive student achievement,” said Superintendent E. Wayne Gent. “Both administrators have a proven track record for supporting collaborative school cultures and sustaining positive academic growth for their students.”

Popwell and Piscopo are both veteran educators in SLPS and have been recognized for outstanding achievement and service throughout their careers. They are also no strangers to professional learning as they have a passion for being on the forefront of the latest educational research and best practices.

Both nominations from SLPS will be shared with the Florida Department of Education’s statewide pool of nominees. State winners will be announced later this year. The Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership was established in 1988 to recognize Florida principals for contributions to their schools and communities. The Outstanding Assistant Principal Achievement Award was established in 1997 to honor assistant principals that have utilized teamwork and leadership to increase student achievement and greatly improve school environments.

The 2018 Giving Concert served a two-fold purpose.  Middle and high school choral groups from across the District provided the gift of music for audience members while audience members, in turn, donated food items to GracePacks for the organization’s weekend food program.  Special thanks to all who supported this year’s event!

Northport Celebrates 8th Annual Unity Day!

For the last eight years, Northport has recognized the month of October as Bullying Awareness Month. Students are educated using a multi-pronged approach with a common message. We don’t tolerate bullying at Northport; we offer tools to cope using an individualized plan, and we promote a single school culture with kindness, civic duty, patriotism, service, care and concern as our bell weather teaching style. Our community always remembers to teach the whole child. We never forget that each child has their own learning style and each receives messages in their own way.

This year, we closely followed the SLPS Stomp Out Bullying, Change the Culture plan that was a collaboration between the Department of Student Services, Department of Social and Emotional Learning and the Department of Exceptional Student Education. We tailored the plan to fit the needs of our school. We honored “Be A Buddy Week,” “Make New Friends Week,” “Stand Up For Others Week,” and “Inclusion Week.” We utilized quotes on the morning announcements as well as specific conversation starters. We promoted “The Promise” pledge and read books related to bullying. We offered, in coordination with our PTO, real tools to cope and what to do if a child feels bullied. Parents have been involved with our specialized approach to deter bullying.

Many thanks to our resource/elective teachers who were integral in implementing our annual “BULLY WALK” around the school during each class period. Northport is a fascinating study in what a true public Title I school should be and, without exception, we are proud to call Northport “OUR SCHOOL!”

Second grade students at Palm Pointe were working on their summarizing skills this week.  Students were allowed to select a grade appropriate book of their choice and were tasked with retelling the events by giving a thorough summary of the book.  In addition to their summary, students used pumpkins to create a representation of one of the main characters in the book.  The second grade team invited all staff and students to come by and visit their storybook pumpkin display.  How amazing and creative our Palm Pointe students are!

Students came to school all decked out in orange to take a stand against bullying.  They wanted to send a clear message that they don’t support bullying and that they won’t be a bystander.  Way to go, students!  Together, let’s stomp out bullying for good.

What a great day in the Northport cafeteria and on our school patio. Hundreds of parents came to enjoy school lunch with their children. Beverly Yates and her MARVELOUS kitchen staff brought different styles of homemade pizza to the school. It was a special day and the community really enjoyed the different toppings and spending time with their children! Let’s do it again, Mrs. Yates and staff !!!!!!!

With over 5,400 employees, St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) was recognized as one of St. Lucie County’s Best Places to Work.  This is the second year in a row the School District has received this honor in the “Large Employer” (over 200 employees) category.  The announcement was accompanied by cheers from staff members at the 17th Annual Best Places to Work St. Lucie County Awards Ceremony held on October 25th and hosted by the St. Lucie County Human Resources Association and Personnel Dynamics.
 
Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jon Prince accepted the award on behalf of the District and commended the dedicated team of professionals whose mission it is to support students’ and their escalating achievement. He said, “Over the past three years, the District has made unprecedented gains in graduation rates and academic achievement.” He added that the individuals who work with children every day, take to heart the challenge of making school the very best part of each student’s day.
 
Winning the distinction of Best Places to Work enhances the District’s recruitment brand and model which integrate support functions that correlate to its mission and vision.   Determining factors for SLPS’s repeat recognition include robust professional training programs, a valued new teacher induction and support program, unique recruitment and retention efforts, and a retirement program.
