F K Sweet’s annual art fair to raise money for the art program was a huge success. Students had more than 10 crafts to chose from and some did them all. First grade students at F. K. Sweet Elementary School have been learning about colors. They started with a black piece of paper and created the center of a sunflower with the neutral brown. Students in Donna Hellums’ first grade class at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school with a day full of fun and engaging activities. Students in Kristin Griffin’s kindergarten class at F. K. Sweet Elementary love learning about different cultures. After learning about the Chinese New Year celebrations, the students were able to try some authentic Chinese dumplings. After trying out their chopsticks on Fruit Loops, Janya Baptiste, left, and Alex Sgouris were ready for the delicious dumplings.
Students in Mrs. Julia Melville’s second grade class have been studying the human body. As a culminating activity to this unit, students created a model of the human skeleton, identifying the bones and their basic functions in relation to the human body. Students in Kasey Ascani’s second grade class at Frances K. Sweet Magnet School were able to explore deeper into story structure during a recent field trip to LEGOLAND. Students in Mr. Donald Logue’s fifth grade class were marine biologists for the week studying sea turtles. Thanks to the Inwater Research Group’s Traveling Turtle Trunk, they measured, weighed, and inspected “captured” sea turtles for signs of distress.
