Explosive Volcanoes at Mariposa Elementary

Fifth grade students, Heather Heath, Tuan Tran, Levi Gonzalez, and Sophia Lopez in Carla Bargeron’s Science resource class at Mariposa Elementary recently completed an exciting science unit.  Students first learned about landforms and volcanoes and then worked in teams to design and construct paper mache’ volcanos.  Students also learned about the steps in the scientific process and physical and chemical changes in matter.  Mrs. Sandra Bushby and the fifth grade students were thrilled as they conducted “explosive” experiments with their hand-made volcanoes and gooey “lava”. Aka jello chemical changes can be fun!

St. Lucie Public Schools administrators and school-based teams worked with school climate specialist and author Rick Lewis during a recent Restorative Practices workshop.

Restorative Practices focuses on establishing a culture of working together to bring about positive behavior changes. The educationally focused goal of restorative practices is to create a generation of professionally capable, self-regulating, emotionally-intelligent, and ethically-minded citizens.

St. Lucie Public Schools students participated at the Florida History Fair in Tallahassee.

This year’s theme was Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History.

Next year’s theme is Taking a Stand in History. The students are already discussing possible topics on their bus ride home.

Experiments matter at Allapattah Flats K8

As part of their science curriculum, students in Bethany DiTullio’s fourth grade class at Allapattah Flats K8 recently studied physical and chemical changes of matter. As a culminating activity, the students performed four different experiments using baking soda and vinegar, salt and water, glow sticks, and crumbling paper. Students then decided whether a physical or chemical change occurred in each experiment based on their observations and knowledge. Students filled out their lab sheets with hypotheses, observations, and data as they went. In support of St. Lucie Public Schools’ (SLPS) continuing effort to recruit and retain experienced teachers, SLPS and the St. Lucie Classroom Teachers’ Association/Classified Unit have agreed to remove contract language that limits the years of experience awarded to returning DROP retirees. Previously, returning DROP retirees had a cap of five years on the experience for which they could receive credit. New language removes the cap and now qualified returning retirees can receive credit for all of their verified years of experience.  Current employees who returned from DROP will be credited with all verified years of experience beginning February 1, 2018.

 

Executive Director of Human Resources Dr. Rafael Sanchez said, “It’s a significant step in the right direction to attract and retain experienced, qualified teachers. We are excited about welcoming back these experienced teachers.” Union President Vicki Rodriguez agreed and added, “There is no substitute for experienced, highly effective teachers in the classroom, especially ones who have experience in our county.”

Executive Directors of Schools Announced

St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent Genelle Yost announced today the selection of current school principals, Pam Dampier and Lydia Martin, as Executive Directors of Schools.

Veteran Principal Pam Dampier currently serves as principal of Lincoln Park Academy. She began her service to St. Lucie Public Schools in 1994 as a teacher who held numerous leadership roles prior to moving into administration. Mrs. Dampier worked as the principal of St. Lucie West K-8 School from August 2005 to June 2013 during which time she facilitated the campus’s successful transition from a middle school to a K-8 school. Mrs. Dampier is a visionary who has the ability to foster support and collaborative relationships amongst her staffs for the united purpose of enhancing student achievement.

Lydia Martin, also celebrated as a successful school leader, will join the the district staff after serving as the principal at Southport Middle School for the past four years. Supporting St. Lucie Public Schools since 1994, Mrs. Martin has held successful leadership roles including classroom instructor, assistant principal and principal. She is a practiced instructional leader who will share her skills and talents to build greater capacity amongst District principals in her new role. Her ability to analyze data and communicate strategies for school improvement make her a natural fit for the position of Executive Director.

Exciting Times in the Northport STEaM Lab!

Wonderful job to the Northstar STEaM students, their instructor, Christine Nurse, and ESE Chairpersons Sherri Yacovino and De Green for their great work with our ESE students. The excitement was palpable as students learned new and exciting hands-on information. Northstars STEaM Team students provided a laser and photonics hands-on lab for our wonderful exceptional students. The students designed and created an authentic triangulated laser and photonics security system.

Hobe Sound Nature Center visited the fourth graders at Mariposa Elementary. The center brought an owl for students to study and look at the world of raptors, while examining closely the adaptions of owls. Mrs. Jennifer Scipioni’s students learned about these adaptations through a hands-on activity investigating owl pellets. During this exciting lab activity, the students learned about food chains, ecology, and natural history. The lab activity produced small skeleton parts from rodents, birds, and more. The fourth graders were very excited to be able to take home these discoveries!

Eleven concert bands from throughout St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) participated in the District 13 Concert Band Music Performance Assessments (MPAs) this past weekend.

At this assessment, the ensembles perform on Stage 3 prepared numbers for three judges.  One selection must be a march.  Students leave the stage and go into the Sight Reading room.  They are handed a booklet that resembles the booklet that students receive when taking FSAs.  They are directed to different passages in the booklet.  The director is allotted a small amount of time to give brief directions, and the bands are then expected to “sight read” the selections and reach a high level of mastery.  To do so, they must bring all of the knowledge they have acquired in daily instruction and apply it in that instant setting.

Keep in mind that MPAs are the Music FSAs.

We urge our directors to always bring high quality instruction to their classes so that our students will always be able to demonstrate a high level of proficiency and earn one of the highest two ratings.  It is also important to point out that SLPS had 11 bands participate at the District 13 MPAs.

EVERYONE COUNTS: Census 2020

The 2020 Census will determine congressional representation, inform hundreds of billions in federal funding every year, and provide data that will impact communities for the next decade.

The 2020 Census will provide a snapshot of our nation—who we are, where we live, and so much more.

The results of this once-a-decade count determines the number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives. They are also used to draw congressional and state legislative districts.

Over the next decade, lawmakers, business owners, and many others will use the 2020 Census data to make critical decisions. The results will show where communities need new schools, new clinics, new roads, and more services for families, older adults, and children.

The results will also inform how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding are allocated to more than 100 programs, including Medicaid, Head Start, block grants for community mental health services, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP.
