Kids Eat Right Month focuses on the importance of healthy and active lifestyles for children and families. As the new school year starts, Child Nutrition Services wants to help families by providing balanced breakfast and lunch options for the students of St. Lucie Public Schools.
The best way to start the day is with breakfast. Studies have shown students who eat a balanced breakfast tend to be more focused and learn better than students who skip breakfast. Child Nutrition Services offers breakfast with items that include whole grains, lean proteins, whole fruit, and low-fat milk options. Child Nutrition Services understands the significance of breakfast for learning. For the 2018-2019 school year, Child Nutrition Services will be offering Universal Free Breakfast for all students at each of the district schools.
Students eating a balanced lunch will have the energy needed to stay focused through the rest of the school day. Child Nutrition Services offers multiple daily options to satisfy any palate. Each café offers an entrée, sub, chef salad, Grab & Go choices. Sides offered daily at each café include garden salads, hot veggie options, cold veggie options and a variety of fruit choices. Students have the opportunity to take up to three fruit and vegetable options to enjoy with their lunch.

The Student Assignment Office shifted its location to the Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex on Kirby Loop Road in Ft. Pierce from August 1 – August 13. The purpose of the shift was to provide better customer service for parents and guardian registering their children for school.

Leah Scheible, a rising junior at Fort Pierce Central High School, was recognized at the August SLPS Board Meeting because she made a big splash at this year’s Special Olympics 2018 USA Games held in Seattle, Washington.
As one of Florida’s 7-member swim team delegation, Leah took twin silvers in her individual 200 freestyle event and 4X50 freestyle relay, and she scooped a fourth-place finish in her individual 100 freestyle event.
Leah’s swim coach, Heather Gray, who accompanied Leah to the Board meeting, describes her as an outstanding athlete.
Leah participates in swim, track, basketball and cheerleading for St. Lucie County’s Special Olympics. She is equally active on Fort Pierce Central High School’s campus, participating as a varsity athlete on the school’s swim team and track team. She also plays junior varsity ladies basketball.
Mrs. Sheila Cash from Garber Buick GMC presented St. Lucie West Centennial High School’s Principal Andrea Popwell with a check for over $6,000.00 during this month’s School Board Meeting. The money raised came from Garber’s Drive for Education campaign to support our community’s students.
Community partners in education are vital to the overall success of the District. From volunteer support to financial support, the wide array of contributions is greatly appreciated.
The health and wellness of our students is vitally important, and SLPS is proud of its continued partnership with the American Heart Association. This partnership is crucial, as today, nearly one in three American kids and teens are overweight or obese and many children to not get enough physical activity. The link between academic achievement and student health and wellness is well-researched. Healthy students miss fewer days, and physical activity is linked to an increase in student cognitive performance.
Ms. Michelle Mason from the American Heart Association attended the August School Board Meeting to recognize students and staff from Morningside Elementary, Oak Hammock K-8, and Palm Point Research School at Tradition — top fundraisers for the American Heart Association.
National Energy Education Development (NEED) selected Morningside Elementary as THE Florida Elementary School of the Year and National Elementary School Runner-Up.
The award was based on Mrs. Mukhamedov’s 5th grade class portfolio on energy studies. The fifth-grade group was highly engaged as their studies and experiments on the science of energy led them through class activities, energy expos, and community festivals. It was an amazing opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge about energy and share information with others to support a more energy conscious community.
The School Board recognized students and their teacher who attended an awards recognition conference in Washington, D.C.

Dinora Gomez, Josh Sorensen, Pat Christian McFadden, and Yasmin Schmidt, recipients of this month’s STAR Award, were acknowledged for their positive customer service by Superintendent E. Wayne Gent and School Board Members. The District appreciates the fact that each one is committed to excellence and going the extra mile to ensure that needs are met, solutions are sought, and helping hands are extended.
St. Lucie Public Schools received the highly sought-after AdvancEd Accreditation, and all SLPS principals received their AdvancED certificate at the August School Board Meeting.
AdvancED is the largest community of education professionals in the world. They conduct rigorous, on-site reviews of a variety of educational institutions and systems to ensure that all learners realize their full potential.
AdvanceED’s expertise is grounded in more than a hundred years of work in school accreditation. Using a set of rigorous research-based standards and evidence based criteria, an AdvancED Performance Accreditation team came to SLPS as we closed last school year and examined the whole institution – our policies, programs, practices, learning conditions and cultural context – to determine how well the parts work together to carry out SLPS’s vision and meet the needs of every learner.
On Wednesday August 8, 2018, the Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion aided the incoming freshmen at open house, the school’s first event. The cadets of JROTC helped incoming students with finding their classes and enrolled many new cadets into the program. Fifty new eager cadets were assigned that day. Cadets working this event felt encouraged to reach out to young motivated students who want to better themselves and their community. Students already enrolled in the program were thrilled to collaborate with the freshmen.

Peaches are a delicious summer treat. A native of China, peaches traveled to Persia before making their way to the Americas with the Spaniards in the 1700’s. Thomas Jefferson grew peaches at Monticello. It wasn’t until the 1900’s that commercial peach growing began in the United States.
A member of the rose family, and classified as a stone fruit due to the large seed in the middle, peaches have a fuzzy skin, with either yellow or white flesh. Two varieties are available: Freestone (flesh separates from seed) or Clingstone (flesh sticks to seed).
When we think of peaches we usually think of Georgia peaches, but peaches are also grown in South Carolina, New Jersey, California and Florida. Yes, Florida! The University of Florida developed a peach that needs fewer chill hours (amount of cold temperature weather to produce peach blossoms) in the 1960’s. Florida peaches are harvested in the spring between late March and May before Georgia peaches are ripe and ready for market.
Nutritionally, one small peach (4.5 oz) contains approximately 50 calories, 12 grams of carbohydrate, 2 grams of fiber. Peaches are also a great source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin C and A. Fresh, canned or frozen — you just can’t beat a peach for a tasty summer treat! In honor of National Eat a Peach Day, all Child Nutrition Cafeterias will be offering peaches as a fruit selection with student meals (August 22, 2018).
Enjoy this recipe for Peach Salsa adapted from the Pioneer Woman
Prep: 15 minutes Serves: 6
2 – 28 oz. cans peaches in juice, drained, juice reserved
1 medium red onion, diced very fine
1 medium red pepper, seeded, diced very fine
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded, minced
½ bunch cilantro, chopped
¼ tsp chili powder
Dash of salt
Juice of one lime
Chop peaches into small pieces and place into a bowl with all the other ingredients. Stir and add a splash of the reserved juice. Adjust seasonings to taste. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour. Serve with tortilla chips or over grilled fish.

The safety of students and staff on campuses as well as at school-sponsored events such as high school football games remain a priority for St. Lucie Public Schools.
The District’s school security team and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office have announced measures to enhance security protocols at all local football events for the coming season. Effective immediately:
• Additional law enforcement officers at each game including parking lot areas
• No backpacks, totes, or similar items permitted (purses and handbags allowed but subject to search)
• No re-entry into game, and no entry after 3rd quarter
• Stadiums cleared pro
