St. Lucie Elementary – Successful Campus Beautification Project!

On Saturday March 12th, St. Lucie Elementary held its first beautification session, “Redress for School Progress” campaign. It was a success, not only because of the work done, but because of the combined efforts of the community to see this campaign through. Present were community leaders, caring parents, supportive students, and a believing administration and staff. St. Lucie County’s Commissioner, Kim Johnson, an advocate of this movement, has played an important role in the planning with administration. We are grateful for his input, presence, and due diligence of the “Redress for School Progress” campaign.

St. Lucie Elementary desires to build on this experience and remain hopeful in gaining positive attention throughout this campaign.

Food and Nutrition Services school staff recently attended the Florida School Nutrition Association Conference to receive training in all areas of its Child Nutrition Program. St. Lucie Mets baseball team pitchers Adam Kolareck and Chase Huchingson and team mascot Slider recently visited WestGate K8 to read to students in first and second grade classes.  The Mets program “Slide Into Reading” rewards students who read a required number of books by giving them two free passes to a summer ball game.  This year at WestGate students scored a grand slam home run!  WestGate is grateful to the Mets for their support of literacy in St. Lucie County.

St. Lucie Monitoring, Preparing For Tropical Storm Erika

FORT PIERCE – St. Lucie County’s Public Safety Department continues to work with local and state government agencies to monitor the potential impacts of Tropical Storm Erika. Because of the uncertainty of the storm’s path and potential strength, decisions regarding closures of schools and government buildings won’t be made until Saturday afternoon.

St. Lucie County Public Safety staff has been and will continue to participate in daily conference calls with the National Hurricane Center, Florida Division of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service in Melbourne. Staff is holding daily meetings with officials from the schools (St. Lucie Public Schools and Indian River State College, local government agencies (City of Fort Pierce, City of Port St. Lucie and South Florida Water Management District) as well as first responders (St. Lucie County Sheriff, St. Lucie County Fire District, Fort Pierce Police Department and Port St. Lucie Department) and the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County.

U.S. Congressman Patrick E. Murphy is scheduled to visit the Douglas M. Anderson Emergency Operations Center to talk with St. Lucie County Commissioners, Public Safety staff and other key decision makers about the projected path of Tropical Storm Erika Saturday, Aug. 29 at 9:30 a.m. The Emergency Operations Center is located at 15305 E. Midway Road.

As for the 11 a.m. update Friday, St. Lucie County is not expected to have hurricane strength winds. However, there is still the potential for Tropical Storm force winds arriving late Sunday through Tuesday.

St. Lucie County and other agencies have already begun making preparations for tropical storm activity, including staging pumps and heavy equipment in key locations around the county. State and local officials encourage residents and businesses to take precautions and follow any protective actions that are issued. The St. Lucie County Code Compliance meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 2 has been canceled. St Lucie Principals Graduate from Prestigious Commissioner’s Leadership Academy

The saying success breeds success holds true for Lydia Martin, principal of Southport Middle, and Debra Snyder, principal of Palm Pointe Research School, who are both recent graduates of the Florida Department of Education’s (FLDOE) Commissioner’s Leadership Academy. The principals were selected to participate in the Academy in recognition of their leadership skills and for being among Florida’s 50 highest performing principals.

In partnership with the FLDOE, the Council for Educational Change has designed the prestigious Commissioner’s Leadership Academy to enhance participants’ strengths and leadership and continue their professional growth. The yearlong experience enabled the principals to build on their successes and influence the leadership of colleagues at the district and state levels.

These principals have demonstrated outstanding leadership and are now in a position to share their experience and expertise with their peers in the district and across the state.” said the President and Executive Director of the Council Dr. Elaine Liftin.

As a result of the experience, Martin was promoted to Executive Director of Schools for Saint Lucie County.

On June 11, 2014, Florida’s Commissioner of Education, Pamela Stewart, and the Council for Educational Change President and Executive Director, Dr. Elaine Liftin, recognized members of the graduating class and encouraged them to continue to share their talents to build instructional leadership capacity by serving as a statewide and district resource.

The Commissioner’s Leadership Academy, sponsored by Carnival Cruise Lines, Florida Blue and Publix Super Markets Charities, has impacted nearly 750 principals and aspiring school leaders, and an estimated 300,000 students over the past two years.

St. Lucie Public Schools Launches New STEAM and Emerging Technology Programs with LEGO®…

St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) is proud to announce the launch of new science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) and emerging technology programs and makerspaces using LEGO Education solutions, which include curriculum and professional development, in two of the district’s new magnet schools: Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie (CAST) and Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies (SGAET). Nearly 3,000 kindergarten through high school students will participate in the programs, bringing first-of-its-kind hands-on learning opportunities to students, including those from minority and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The new programs officially launched today with two ribbon cutting ceremonies attended by esteemed members of the St. Lucie community, including Fort Pierce Mayor Linda Hudson and St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent E. Wayne Gent at CAST and SGAET. Community leaders and school officials are thrilled to launch these new programs, which offer customized learning opportunities for all students. “These new programs in collaboration with LEGO Education represent a monumental turning point in the education we’re able to provide our students,” said Gent. “Each program is purposefully built to address minority isolation, address equity and access to STEAM learning pathways, and offer students exceptional hands-on experiences that will help them master STEAM skills to prepare them for college and future careers.”

Two of St. Lucie’s three new magnet schools opened this year after the SLPS was awarded a $12.5 million multi-year federal grant. CAST and SGAET began their transformation in August for the 2018-2019 school year with CAST focusing on the arts, and SGAET focusing on STEM. Fort Pierce Westwood High School will begin infusing new programs with full implementation expected for the 2019-2020 school year, focusing on pre-medical, pharmacy, agri-technology, veterinary and oceanography programs.

“This first-ever district approach to STEAM learning is an incredible opportunity for the students of St. Lucie and LEGO Education will offer a variety of hands-on learning solutions, lessons and professional development to match the diverse curriculums – from fine arts to emerging technologies – of each school,” said Silver McDonald, Head of LEGO Education North America. “Through our partnership, LEGO Education developed custom curriculum for St. Lucie educators and administrators to enrich their students’ education through the skills our solutions help teach: collaboration, critical thinking, communication and creativity.”

LEGO Education created showcase makerspaces at both magnet schools and worked closely with school leadership to develop custom, standard aligned makerspaces that match the curriculum and pacing of each grade level at each school. In preparation to develop these makerspaces, the team held intensive trainings with teachers and administrators to flesh out the skills, projects, and visions that they had for their classrooms and explored ways they can take the lessons even further to make them more hands-on with LEGO Education solutions. In addition, LEGO Education created a unique form of professional development that included month-long shoulder-to-shoulder training sessions that ensured St. Lucie educators become experts in using LEGO Education solutions to ensure comfortability and success. The LEGO Education solutions being used at each school include a custom Maker and STEAM curriculum along with LEGO Education’s Coding Express, WeDo 2.0 and MINDSTORMS® Education EV3.

St. Lucie Public School Leaders Have Strong Skill Sets

ST. LUCIE COUNTY: Dr. Jonathan Prince will serve as St. Lucie Public Schools’ Deputy Superintendent. As a twenty-three year public education veteran, he brings with him vast teaching and leadership experiences including recognition as one of the state’s Turnaround Principals of the Year. Superintendent E. Wayne Gent, lauded Prince for his history of building cultures of academic excellence and achievement stating, “Among his many accomplishments as a leader, Dr. Prince has supported accelerated growth in writing, reading, and most importantly increased graduation rates for students.”

Superintendent Gent cited the rich talent among the current pool of District leaders as well and highlighted several principal appointments. Susan Seal, an experienced school principal will lead Treasure Coast High School Titans for the coming year, Eldrique Gardner will bring his expertise to the campus of St. Lucie West K-8, Ucola Barrett-Baxter will turn her focus to Village Green Elementary School, and John Lynch will bring his legacy of enhancing school performance to Fort Pierce Westwood High School as an Executive Director on Special Assignment. “We have the very best leadership team in place and will continue to build a strong culture of academic excellence as we focus our teaching and learning efforts on the standards deemed appropriate for students to be successful in their choices for college and the world of work,” added Gent.

With a clear vision for configuring a strong infrastructure, Gent is also aware of the imperative to reduce the number of senior level positions. Therefore, additional leadership shifts respect talent and honor a balanced organization. ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL – Growing by leaps and bounds is the best way to describe St. Lucie Public Schools’ (SLPS) graduation rate and industry certification ascent over the last few years. Projections for this year’s graduating class indicate the upward trend will continue. This holds true for industry certification trends as well. The number of students passing industry certification tests through SLPS Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs is projected to surpass 2,300.  That’s an increase of 140 percent over a two-year spread.

While the District currently has the fifth highest graduation rate in the state, this year’s projected rate increase of one to two percent, will result in an overall District graduation rate of 91 to 92 percent, helping to maintain a top spot for SLPS. Focusing on its six comprehensive high schools, the data indicates that all will increase or maintain their current graduation rate, and all will boast rates of more than 91 percent. In fact, projections for SLPS’s six comprehensive high schools will exceed 95%.  “Meeting Florida’s high bar for graduation is a challenge for our students.  Our success in this area reflects the work of all our K -12 teachers and staff.  Everyone has a hand in a child’s success,” said Deputy Superintendent Jon Prince.

What does this mean for graduates of SLPS?  “Our mission is to equip all students with the knowledge, skills, and desire to succeed so they are prepared for college and the world of work.  Graduating with a high school diploma is a critical first step for our students,” explained Superintendent E. Wayne Gent. He added that CTE programs offer students the opportunity to achieve industry-recognized certifications, work-based learning experiences, and articulated college credits that provide technical skills, rigorous academic foundations, and real-world experiences needed for post-secondary education and high-skill, high-wage, high-demand careers. Passing the industry certification tests means students have an immediate employability edge.

Gent pointed out that with the continued surge in graduation rates and industry certification passing rates, he is also pleased to see the continued growth among all demographic groups.  “We are committed to serve all students as we help them achieve their goals. I am very proud of the dedication our teachers and administrators have to support each child every day, said the Superintendent.”

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL — Growth continues in St. Lucie Public Schools according to the Florida Department of Education’s release of Grade 3 ELA Scores.  The District saw a four-percentage point increase over last year’s benchmark; furthermore, 62% of the County’s traditional schools increased in the number of students who scored at proficiency levels (Levels 3, 4, and 5).

Bayshore Elementary showed the greatest gain in the District over last year with a 21% gain. Other schools with large increases include Floresta Elementary with a 16% increase; Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies with a 15% increase; and St. Lucie West K-8 with a 12% increase. In addition, C. A. Moore Elementary, Lakewood Park Elementary, Manatee Academy K-8, and Rivers Edge Elementary increased by nine percentage points.

Fairlawn Elementary led the performance among our schools on the Grade 3 FSA ELA Reading with 75% of their students scoring proficient on the assessment.  West Gate K-8 and Palm Pointe had 71% of their students scoring proficient on the assessment.  Several other schools exceeded the District average of 50% including:  St. Lucie West K-8 and Morningside at (69%), Manatee K-8 (66%), Bayshore (59%), Allapattah Flats K-8 (58%), Rivers Edge and Mariposa (57%), Floresta (56%), F.K. Sweet (55%), and Village Green scoring at the District Level of 50%.

Superintendent E. Wayne Gent stated that early literacy is a high priority and part of the District’s strategic plan for continued improvement.  “We see momentum and celebrate the growth that has occurred.  At the same time, we are analyzing instructional strategies and resources in order to accelerate future growth for our boys and girls.”

St. Lucie Public Schools: A Winning Mindset

In each of the St. Lucie Public Schools, a Statue of Liberty replica serves as a constant reminder that public schools were created to strengthen democracy, and our public schools remain the main channel through which our country makes good on its fundamental promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As such, St. Lucie Public Schools’ (SLPS) commitment first and foremost is to ensure that all of our students have equal access to a high quality and rigorous education and graduate college and/or career ready, as informed and engaged citizens.

Every child who walks onto any of our campuses deserves the same opportunities to learn and experience success despite the burdens placed upon our educators by misguided political reforms and policies from special interest groups or from those who seek to make a profit off of our children.  Our dedicated team of teachers, administrators, and support staff forge forward with a vengeance to figure out where links need to be soldered, fences mended, and bridges built in order to support our students so they may accomplish their goals and dreams.  When their goals and dreams become their reality, our communities are strengthened, our nation is bonded, and our democracy is fortified.

Our efforts are paying off.  SLPS’s 2015-2016 graduation rate is record-setting at 86.8%, and this has catapulted our county from 45th to 13th in the State. Landmark achievement such as this does not happen by accident, nor does it happen without focusing on the individual needs of each student. The graduation rate for African American students increased 14.1%; that’s 10% above the State average.  Hispanic students saw a 9.8% increase, rising above the State average by 8%; and white students realized a 10.5% increase, moving 3.9% beyond the State average.  Our ESE students’ graduation rate skyrocketed 17.88%, surpassing the State average by 13.3%.

The gauge is moving in the right direction for early literacy as well.  In a year where State trends in reading scores remained somewhat lackluster, our students showed growth.  Clearly, this is a priority area for progress and the outpouring of community support is most welcome in our efforts to engage young readers and establish literacy-rich environments.

And while it is a fact that a child’s socioeconomic status can create unique obstacles affecting reading proficiency and vocabulary development, we’re not standing behind them as excuses.  On the contrary, we’re tackling them head on. Politicians and policymakers cannot fix these challenges.  SLPS educators are in the midst of cultural shift, altering long-held assumptions, beliefs, expectations, and approaches to learning.

We are solution-seekers.  For example, to support Internet access, SLPS is leveraging low cost solutions through Comcast for nearly 3,000 of our families with students in kindergarten through twelfth grade.  Next year, our can-do action broadens access to even more families through our Sprint partnership.

This year alone, there are almost 7,500 high school student course enrollments in Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge (AICE), and Dual Enrollment (DE).  Middle school students also participate in pre-AP courses as a jump start to success. The AP exam participation rate increased by 30% with AP performance increasing by nearly the same rate.

In addition, SLPS provided every eleventh grade student with the opportunity to take the SAT assessment during the school day at no cost – a great enhancement to equity and accessibility for college and/or career choices.

Also important in determining viable and marketable career choices is the close relationship the District has with the Economic Development Council, CareerSource, and community based organizations.  Positive partnerships such as these have led to active participation in the Skills Gap Study which addresses the workforce needs in our community – important information to inform program decisions for our Career and Technical Education Programs (CTE).

And just how are we doing in regard to engaging our students in CTE?  Fifty-one percent of our students are exposed to at least one CTE class through 62 Career Academies offered.  Industry certifications have increased by 61%.  This means students are graduating prepared with industry credentials, ready to enter the world of work, with skills that align to predicted areas of major economic growth.

Allied Health, Culinary, Manufacturing, Aerospace Technologies, Agritechnology, Finance, Cybersecurity, Promotional Enterprise, and Carpentry – these are among the CTE offerings afforded to students.  SLPS welcomes our community members to join us for our educational tours and serve as mentors or volunteers.

As a community, we all want what is best for our children.  Our teachers model that expectation.  To each of them, I say thank you. Research shows that teachers are more passionate and mission driven than those in other professions; they teach because they want to make a difference in the world one child at a time.   A child’s first and best teacher should be their parent.  Unfortunately, that is not the case for far too many of our children. Educators are not only asked to teach children but raise many of them as well.  Teachers don’t seek fame and recognition but are driven by a moral purpose, and they come to work day after day prepared and determined to make a difference.

That difference will not come about by policymakers mandating change.  Change will only happen through local will and capacity.  There must be an end to the culture of blame; we must have a community culture that values risk-taking, recognition, and shared accountability.  Through our work together, we need to identify key challenges, verify them with data, and unite to explore strategies leading to a remedy we all can rally to support.

In SLPS, business as usual is not acceptable.  We are in the business of continuous improvement.  Therefore, I am looking forward to what tomorrow holds in store, because I know our best days are ahead of us.

 

St. Lucie Public Schools and CWA Union Reach Agreement

Through collaborative bargaining efforts, St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) and Communication Workers of America (CWA), Local 3181 reached an agreement for compensation. “I commend our teams for working diligently to reach an agreement prior to the start of our school year. We appreciate all of our staff members for the contributions they make to the safe and caring learning environments for our students,” said Superintendent E. Wayne Gent.

The value of the compensation package for employees who are represented by the CWA is estimated at $663,000.00. The new contract also includes the continued Board contribution of $750.00 to a Health Savings Account (HSA) for employees enrolled in the Blue Options Plan 5180/5181. In addition to this, SLPS’s Chief Negotiator Kathy McGinn explained that an additional top step has been added to all CWA salary schedules, and all bargaining unit members will receive a step increase on the salary schedule. The collaborative bargaining teams also agreed that all CWA bargaining unit members will receive an additional $345.00 which will be reflected in the salary schedule as well.

CWA represents transportation, security, maintenance, custodial, and school meals program employees. The agreement is retroactive to July 1, 2015, but must first be ratified by the Board.

An entourage of St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) administrators surprised the three finalists for School Related Employee of the Year on Tuesday. Cheers and sounds of glee filled the classrooms, offices, and hallways as Delores “Annie” Jones (Lakewood Park Elementary), Emily Siangco (Student Services Department), and Charles Pilson (Manatee Academy) were made aware of this recognition.

Superintendent E. Wayne Gent stated that he was humbled by the honorees’ tremendous contributions to the District’s education system. “Our support staff team members are paramount to the success of our schools. These individuals represent the dedication, innovation, and teamwork we are so proud of in our network of SLPS professionals. The service they provide to our students and community is exceptional.”

Honoring school related employees is a program that is supported by the Florida Department of Education in which outstanding education support personnel are recognized for the significant impact they make on their schools and district school systems. Locally, one individual will be selected to represent SLPS at the state level during the Night of the Stars gala scheduled for February 20, 2016.

About the Finalists

Delores “Annie” Jones

The nominee from Lakewood Park Elementary is Delores “Annie” Jones — “Ms. Annie” as she is known by staff and students alike. She is the school clerk but her contributions to students, staff, and the community far exceed her job title.

In April of 2015, Jones joined the staff at Lakewood Park as a clerk. According to her principal, she is so much more than the school clerk; students love the attention she gives them. Many stop by to show her their planners and point sheets; she takes delight in rejoicing and reaffirming their success with them. Her days at Lakewood Park are full ones, but her commitment to her family and community are not limited by the hours in a day. Jones volunteers with the 4-H Club, Treasure Coast Food Bank, and Parents Guild Committee among other benevolent organizations.

Charles Pilson

Charles Pilson is the School Related Employee of the Year for Manatee Academy. For the past four years, Pilson has served as the school’s Behavior Intervention Classroom Monitor. He is very aware of the challenges many students face each day and he supports and encourages their success in the classroom and in the educational environment. He always lends an ear and a supportive word to those students who seek his counsel.

His normal work day ends and his dedication hours begin. He serves as the school’s track coach, business partner liaison, and advisor to the Student Council and Honor Society. Pilson works with the Guardian Ad Litem program as well. He is a humanitarian who seeks the good in each and every student every day.

Emily Siangco

Emily Siangco represents the Student Services Department. She has an extensive background in pediatric physical therapy and has supported students in St. Lucie County since 2002 and continues to enhance her skills through professional seminars and trainings, taking advantage of each opportunity for growth. She has received training in pediatric brain neuroanatomy and the sensory system including the necessary treatment applications. Siangco is also skilled in using visual supports in occupational and physical therapy applications.

Siangco works with students from pre-kindergarten classes to those in high school and spends time with parents helping them navigate the paperwork required to secure equipment in their own homes for their child’s needs. This equipment assures that the family can be involved in their child’s treatment. Santiago is described as a team player willing to lend a hand at any time. Her very real reward is the progress made by the students she serves.

St. Lucie Public Schools Announces Finalists for School Related Employee of the Year

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – In the spirit of the season, students and staff made a joyful noise filling the hallways and classrooms of St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) as the Education Foundation of St. Lucie County and SLPS administrators surprised the three finalists for School Related Employee of the Year on Friday.  Juana Garcia (Mariposa Elementary), Dawn Parker (Dan McCarty Middle School), and Natasha Ramos (Oak Hammock K-8) will represent the District as this year’s finalists.

Superintendent E. Wayne Gent stated that he is inspired by the commitment to service and volunteerism that each finalist represents.  “Our staff care deeply about our students and our community. They spend countless hours volunteering in their schools and in our community.  Their actions speak volumes to their commitment,” said Gent.

Education Foundation President Thom Jones said, “This is one of my favorite days of the year because the Education Foundation exists to promote, encourage, and recognize excellence in public education.”

About the Finalists

Juana Garcia

Juana Garcia is the nominee from Mariposa Elementary.  She is a paraprofessional for English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and over the last four years her contributions to the school have proved to be far reaching.  She provides support in the classroom, assists in the ESOL lab, works as a liaison with parents, serves as research support for ESOL data with the guidance team, and is committed to helping with school events to support parent involvement.

In addition to this, Garcia facilitates Mariposa’s evening adult English language classes for Hispanic and Haitian parents.  According to Principal Logue, she has committed two evenings per week for the last year and a half to this program.  He said, “Because of Juana’s commitment, our lab program for our parents has continued to grow.  She provides the time, instruction, energy, and care to help our parents acquire the English language skills they desire.”

Dawn Parker

Dawn Parker represents Dan McCarty Middle School.  She serves as the school’s executive secretary responsible for maintaining the administrative schedule of the school’s principal as well as organizing events and serving as an ambassador to parents and community members who visit the school.

As a 12-year St. Lucie Public Schools employee, Parker has been on Dan McCarty’s campus for most of those years.  She is extremely involved in campus and community activities beyond her office responsibilities.  She supports students as a mentor, step coach, and Kids at Hope Treasure Hunter.  In the community, she actively pursues committee work in her church and volunteers at Matthews Café.

Natasha Ramos

Natasha Ramos is the School Related Employee of the Year for Oak Hammock K-8.  For more than nine years, Ramos has called Oak Hammock her school home serving first as an ESOL paraprofessional and currently as a school clerk.  Her keen awareness of campus activities helps her manage the many responsibilities associated with supporting her principal, teachers, and administrative staff in order to maintain a smooth flow of communication, schedules, and activities such as honor roll ceremonies.

While Ramos makes certain the teachers at Oak Hammock are provided the attention they need, she also supports the next generation of teachers by facilitating the schedule for IRSC teacher interns who are observing classes and working on credentials to complete their education programs.  She also extends herself beyond the school campus into the community as an organizer and leader for her church and Relay for Life.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Amid cheers from colleagues, a band of educational prize patrol leaders made surprise visits to announce the three School Related Employee of the Year finalists on Tuesday, December 5th. Adela DellaCroce (Treasure Coast High School), Ja’Mia Gibson (Fairlawn Elementary School), and Jonathan Marcelin (Dan McCarty Middle School) are all contenders to represent the District at the State level. St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) administrators, School Board Members, Education Foundation Board Members, and major teacher recognition sponsors from MIDFLORIDA CREDIT Union were among those on the day’s announcement tour.

Superintendent E. Wayne Gent is proud to honor the commitment of these dedicated employees.  He said, “The individuals we recognized today are all deserving.  Each plays an integral role in supporting the positive climate and continued academic success that our schools experience.  Their service on campus and off campus is superior and has a positive impact to the overall well-being of our community.”

The Night of the Stars event is an annual event sponsored the Education Foundation of St. Lucie County.  President Thom Jones emphasized the importance of the Foundation in advancing K-12 public education in St. Lucie County by increasing the capacity and resources of the district in partnership with key stakeholders.  According to Jones, “Our local Education Foundation serves as the conduit for private sector investment and community involvement in our public schools.  It also serves as the primary link between local education and regional, statewide and national donors; and it leverages these relationships for the benefit of local education, creating partnerships with businesses and organizations that impact students in the classroom and strengthen cooperation between the private sector and our public schools.”

 

About the Finalists

Adela DellaCroce

Adela DellaCroce, a 13-year SLPS veteran, serves as a clerk managing meeting schedules, student attendance, and paperwork for the 700 strong junior class at Treasure Coast High School. In addition, she assists with maintaining discipline records, supporting honor roll recognitions, organizing school assemblies, and coordinating faculty meetings.  She handles each of these responsibilities with grace and passion.  She truly sees the entire school as an organization and understands the different roles that are necessary for it to function effectively.

 

Her colleagues appreciate the fact that she has a mindset that is constantly focused on how the school can improve services and opportunities for students. With her support, the school has established a campaign for aiding students in need of basic toiletries through Nick’s Necessities and for those who are food insecure, a healthy partnership with the Treasure Coast Food Bank is now viable on campus.

 

With her ability to network, communicate, and advocate for Treasure Coast High School, Mrs. DellaCroce was a natural for the Volunteer Coordinator and Community Business Partner Liaison.  Last year, she coordinated efforts with the Titan’s International Business Academy to create BizCom, an annual showcase for the academies within Treasure Coast High School specifically designed to inform area businesses of the skills and training students develop prior to entering the local workforce.

Ja’Mia Gibson

Ja’Mia Gibson is a caring and dedicated health paraprofessional who is committed to maintaining a safe environment for all students and staff. Having worked in the District for over six years, staff and students count on Ms. Gibson for positive health care including daily TLC along with routine vision and health screenings, maintenance of student health records, follow-up health care, on-campus emergency care, and positive campus support.  Her smile is something that is always welcome, especially the first thing in the morning as students arrive on campus.

 

She also extends herself beyond her required duties and responsibilities by taking on initiatives that support activities such as the Martin Luther King Jr. parade float creation and parade march.  Off campus, her good deeds continue.  For over six years, Ms. Gibson has volunteered at Daily Bread Storehouse Ministries preparing over 200 meals on Saturdays to help feed those in need.  She helps plan, prep, prepare, and serve meals; pass out flyers; and fundraise for the organization. To those with whom she works, they see her as a ray of sunshine – someone who brightens a room.  Whether on campus or off campus, her spirit of good will and service to others is a common thread.

Jonathan Marcelin

Mr. Jonathan Marcelin joined the SLPS team two years ago and serves as the Dan McCarty campus monitor responsible for maintaining a positive environment.  As a cornerstone of the school, members of the campus find it hard not to get caught up in his enthusiasm for children, enveloped in his warmth, his smile, his constant cheer.  He is tireless in his commitment to the well–being of the overall Eagles population, and he wants to ensure that all are soaring to greater heights.  On any given day, Mr. Marcelin finds himself serving a variety of roles to assist students.  They seek his guidance as a positive and caring adult on campus, ask for his assistance in problem solving, and use him as a sounding board to share progress toward their goals.

 

Mr. Marcelin also takes part in before- and after- school activities in order to facilitate parent and business partnerships.  His fresh and energetic appeal to the community has been the catalyst for recruiting additional members to the school’s PTO and SAC organizations.  Once he completes his responsibilities on campus, he continues his service walk in the community through organizations that support youth mentorship and leadership.  He dedicates both his professional and personal time to making Dan McCarty as well as St. Lucie County a great place to learn and grow.

St. Lucie Public Schools Announces Kindergarten Online Open Enrollment

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL – St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) Kindergarten open enrollment is scheduled to re-open with 24/7 online access.  The registration window will begin on May 20, 2019 and remain open until June 21, 2019.  Students entering kindergarten must be five years on or before September 1, 2019.

 

According to SLPS Student Assignment Director Michelle Jerger, “We understand that selecting a school for a child is a very important decision. Access to online enrollment provides our parents and guardians with more flexibility in the process.  All they need to do is visit our online enrollment site (https://www.stlucie.k12.fl.us/departments/student-assignment/) any time or any day of the week.  Step-by-step directions will help guide them through the process.”  She added that staff members are also available to help with the application process.

 

To enroll a new kindergarten student, parents and/or guardians must present the following:

  • Original birth certificate
  • Social Security Card (if available)
  • Proof of custody (if the child is not living with both natural parents)
  • Name and address of last school attended
  • Copy of Individual Education Plan (IEP) if your child is in an Exceptional Education Program
  • 2 Primary Proofs of Address (NAME and ADDRESS must be printed on document)
    • Electric, Water, or Land Line Telephone Bill – within 30 days
    • Signed Lease Agreement – within 60 days
