Shareef’s Project Ranks as Best in Show

FORT PIERCE, FL – Haniya Shareef, a junior at Lincoln Park Academy, is no stranger to innovation as her ratings at this year’s State Science and Engineering STEM Fair and Competition prove.  Her individual project, “Molecular Characterization and Enhanced Efficacy of a Novel Host-Specified Bioherbicide Candidate for Cyperus Rotundus,” entered in the Plant Sciences Category was awarded First Place and the Division Grand Award.  In addition, Shareef was one of only eight students throughout the entire state of Florida whose project was selected as Best in Show.  The other St. Lucie County students participating in the State Fair also returned to the District laden with accolades for their ingenuity and creativity.

 

Based on the project selection criteria from the Regional Fair, top-ranking students were selected to advance to the State Fair.  Escorted by their chaperones, they ventured from St. Lucie County to Lakeland for the three-day judging event.  Once there, they had the opportunity to network with others, engage in inquiry and problem solving, and glean ideas for future exploration.  According to one of the chaperones and local Science Fair Coordinator Paul Reif, “There were over 875 projects being judged at this year’s event, and I am always fascinated by the culture of positive collaboration as students share their thought processes and reflections with one another.  I look forward to this each year!”

The SLWK-8 Shark Chefs have been working hard all year preparing dishes for the Gridiron Challenge and they have qualified for the 2017 FINAL FOUR! The competition takes place April 22 in Davie FL, at the NFL Training Facility. The Chefs have perfected their Chicken Alfredo with Broccoli recipe and are ready for the competition! They are excited to represent SLWK-8 and St. Lucie Public Schools!

Shelby Durden 2014-15 US Presidential Scholar

St. Lucie Public Schools is proud to announce our 2014-2015 US Presidential Scholar, Ms. Shelby Durden. Shelby is a senior at Fort Pierce Westwood High School.

Each year, we recognize a senior that has displayed leadership and character, been involved in community service and reached high levels of academic achievement while overcoming obstacles.

As a young child of 18 months, Shelby was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis.  She has been through periods of remission and also painful periods requiring hospital homebound services.  Early on, Shelby decided that she would not let this stop her.   She found selfless ways to connect with and help others with their own struggles.

Shelby has dedicated over 200 hours to the local Arthritis Foundation, Harbor Branch and the Oxbow Center.  She has taken mission trips, fed the hungry and homeless, and repaired homes with the Boys & Girls Club.  She is involved in many campus activities and now volunteers at IRSC as well as with the Sheriff’s Explorers.

As a sophomore, Shelby started taking Dual Enrollment classes.  She was invited by IRSC to join the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and selected for their honors college.  She will be graduating with her Associates Degree in Biology on May 2nd.   She plans on pursuing an eventual PhD in Neurobiology.

With all of these academic and extracurricular efforts, Shelby has maintained a weighted GPA of 5.45 ! Consequently, she is Valedictorian of Ft. Pierce Westwood High School.

Shelby credits the ongoing support of her family for helping her to develop a positive outlook on life. 

Wherever the road takes her, this humble and respectful young woman will touch others with her warm attitude and love of life.

Sheriff’s detectives provide internet safety guidance to Floresta Elementary parents

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office detectives spoke to parents at Floresta Elementary School recently about internet safety. Risky internet decisions while utilizing social media include socializing, downloading, posting photos, music, and games were discussed. Parents were made aware of the dangers of unknown friending, posting personal information, embarrassing or harassing people, sending provocative images, sharing passwords, or clicking on pop-ups. Attendees were shown a presentation and videos focusing on internet safety. Warning signs include receiving gifts, making calls to unknown numbers, turning away from friends and family, or exhibiting extreme emotional behavior when they have no access to the internet. These three amazing ladies are the heart of the process when we adopt a new program in SLPS.  They begin the conversations, find out the schematics, and then program to meet our needs.  This tireless effort from Tammy, Sue, and Gloria to ensure students and teachers have access to our many products K-12 should be recognized.  They patiently seek answers, provide insight, and support decisions on how students can best access curriculum.  Without these three dedicated SLPS ITS personnel, we could not achieve all that we do in our Core Subject Areas.

Shirley Helton named Florida Stock Market Challenge teacher of the year

Shirley Helton named Florida Stock Market Challenge teacher of the year

Fairlawn Elementary School fifth grade teacher Shirley Helton has been named the Distinguished Stock Market Challenge Advisor of the Year for the State of Florida for demonstrating excellence in teaching economics skills of free enterprise and financial literacy. Each year, the Florida Council on Economic Education and Publix Super Markets Charities recognize a Distinguished Stock Market Advisor who goes above and beyond in teaching children about how financial markets work, how to invest money, and entrepreneurship.  Helton’s fifth grade students this year won first place in the state Stock Market Challenge Elementary Division in the Fall Competition and second place in the state Spring Competition. Helton has also been nominated for Excellence in Teaching History Award for the State of Florida.  Sponsored by Pearson Prentice Hall, this award is to recognize and celebrate a Florida teacher of history who encourages an appreciation and respect for the discipline of history, involves students in the historical process, and evidences mastery of the subject matter.

Fairlawn Elementary School teacher Shirley Helton was recently presented with the 2012 “Excellence in Teaching History Award” for the state of Florida. This prestigious award is presented by the Florida Council for the Social Studies to recognize a teacher who encourages an appreciation and respect for history, involves students in the historical process, and evidences mastery of the subject matter. Congratulations to Ms. Helton for earning this distinction.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL – St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) bears the distinction of receiving a sizeable federal Magnet School Assistance Program Grant (MSAP) valued at 12.5 million dollars. The District’s winning grant proposal will transform the historic Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts (FPMSA), Samuel S. Gaines Academy (SGA), and Fort Pierce Westwood High School (FPWHS).

 

All three schools will become Magnet Schools offering innovative programs.  FPMSA and SGA will begin their transformation this August for the 2018-2019 school year as the revitalized, all-new Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie (CAST) and Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies respectively.  FPWHS will begin infusing new programs in August with full implementation for the 2019-2020 school year.

 

Students are invited to join the “CAST” of The Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie as the school begins its transformation and is revitalized into a true comprehensive Arts magnet.   Programs will include dance, vocal and instrumental music, drama, musical theatre, and visual and graphic arts. Students will thrive academically and artistically in our performing and visual arts programs.  These programs will develop and enhance the talents of students to realize their full potential as performers and artists.  Student talents will be on full display for the community in many forums in the future.

 

In addition, the CAST campus is undergoing the addition of a new dance studio and a black box theatre along with remodeled classrooms for each art program.  The historic auditorium will be upgraded with new state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment to ensure top quality performances. Portable equipment will allow for lunchtime entertainment as well as outdoor theater and musical events such as monologue and one-act performances in the courtyard.

 

Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies will be a STEM-based K-8 Magnet School, exposing students to skills needed for current and future jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  New courses will expose students to computer coding, gaming, robotics, agri-technology, medicine, and augmented and virtual reality applications.  The Technology, Agri-tech and Science/Medical course pathways promote an inquiry-based approach to learning through Innovation Labs, Design Challenge Studios and the use of emerging technologies made available through grant funds.  Dedicated partnerships with industry leaders such as Microsoft will expose students and teachers to cutting edge-concepts and develop unique skills.

 

FPWHS students will be future ready.  New Course pathways include Pre-med, Pharmacy Tech, and Technology/Computer Programming in addition to the existing Agri-technology, Veterinary Science and award-winning Marine Oceanographic Academy.  Preparation for high demand and emerging careers such as data scientists will be at the forefront in Makerspaces that foster collaboration with immersive learning tools, analytic tools, and other technologies.  A plethora of rigorous pre-collegiate and college level courses will be added and science labs will be upgraded and re-designed to ensure students are prepared for challenging careers in this increasingly digital global economy.  As a 1:1 technology-based high school, it is an ideal candidate for a STEAM college/career program as they continue to build their partnerships with the local scientific community, including Indian River State College and Florida Atlantic University.

 

According to Chief Academic Officer Dr. Helen Wild, “All three schools will feature pre-collegiate course offerings.” She added, “All three will use cutting-edge concepts such as Makerspaces.  Makerspaces bring together science, art, computers and building to allow students to create, experiment, mentor and to invent as they collaborate to solve problems.  This is so exciting for our students. The grant also includes learning opportunities for teacher development through specialized training aligned to new programming and tools.”

Silver Level Recognition for the Worksite Wellness Award

Tad Fisher of the Florida Tobacco Cessation Alliance presented St. Lucie Public Schools with the Silver Level Recognition for the Worksite Wellness Award for Comprehensive Tobacco Cessation Benefits. Stacy Jacobson, Wellness Manager and champion for healthy choices, submitted the application on behalf of SLPS. The award is based upon the Public Health Services Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence to effect cessation treatments.

St. Lucie Public Schools were recognized at the School Board Meeting on October 28th who achieved the Silver School Award for 2013-14. The Silver School Award is presented to recognize secondary schools that provide exemplary services to elementary and secondary schools that meet the following criteria: the sending school must have a school volunteer who provides coordination of the program, placement of students, orientation/training for the receiving staff, student/program evaluation, and student volunteer supervision; student volunteers and the receiving faculty must both receive orientation and training; the composite student volunteer hours must equal at least one half the total number of students (FTE count) in the sending school; and elementary schools are not eligible for this award.

The awards were presented to the following schools: Fort Pierce Central High, Fort Pierce Westwood High, Forest Grove Middle, Lincoln Park Academy, Northport K-8, Oak Hammock K-8, Port St. Lucie High, St. Lucie West Centennial High, St. Lucie West K-8, Southern Oaks Middle, Southport Middle, Treasure Coast High, and West Gate K-8. At PACE Center for Girls, the Speakers Bureau’s first guest speaker of the year was Ms. Denise Sirmons, Treasure Hunter and Kids at Hope Coordinator. She captivated the students with her life story. Although she made several wrong choices as a youth, Ms. Sirmons eventually learned from her mistakes. The most important thing she learned in life was the importance  of surrounding herself with successful people, walking with integrity, and working hard.
