ST. LUCIE  COUNTY – Ecstatic and astonished were the common reactions from St. Lucie Public Schools’ (SLPS) Outstanding Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year nominees as Superintendent E. Wayne Gent and an entourage of well-wishers surprised the school leaders with the news this week.

Mrs. Latricia Woulard, principal of St. Lucie Elementary, and Mrs. Michelle Herrington, assistant principal of Windmill Point Elementary, are this year’s nominees. While the two school leaders serve different schools this academic year, they served together last year as a dynamic duo at Windmill Point Elementary.  “Both ladies are exemplary in their dedication to helping their students excel.  Their innovation in leadership is fueled by their passion to see each and every child succeed,” said Gent.

The Principal and Assistant Principal Achievement Awards for Outstanding Leadership were established by the state to recognize exemplary school leaders for their contributions to their schools and communities. The program honors those who have utilized teamwork and leadership skills to spearhead initiatives to increase student performance, promote safe learning environments, and establish partnerships with parents and community members.  “I am truly honored to be recognized for doing what I dearly love,” said Woulard amid hugs and cheers.

Woulard and Herrington are veteran educators in St. Lucie Public Schools and have been recognized for stellar achievement throughout their careers. Both were celebrated as Teachers of the Year, both have held positions in which they led talent development as leaders of leaders, and both are voracious in their desire to bring to light the quality educational programs provided to students in St. Lucie County.  As one who benefited first-hand from SLPS, Herrington stated, “I am always proud that I am a product of St. Lucie Public Schools, LPA class of 1997!”

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – Wide eyes, smiles and tributes to the efforts of school staffs were the common threads that bound Principal Traci Wilke and Assistant Principal Marcy Luckey as they were surprised with the news that they are this year’s Outstanding Principal and Assistant Principal for St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS). Superintendent E. Wayne Gent and an entourage of well-wishers visited Wilke at Lawnwood Elementary and Luckey at St. Lucie Elementary to share the accolades.

“Outstanding school leaders set the pace for school achievement,” said Superintendent Gent.  “They are definitely focused on creating learning environments in which every child succeeds.”

Wilke and Luckey are both veteran educators in St. Lucie Public Schools and have been recognized for outstanding achievement and service throughout their careers. They are also not strangers to professional learning as they have a passion for being on the forefront of the latest educational research and best practices.

Both nominations from St. Lucie Public Schools will be shared with the Florida Department of Education’s statewide pool of nominees.  State winners will be announced later this year.   The Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership was established in 1988 to recognize Florida principals for their contributions to their schools and communities. The Outstanding Assistant Principal Achievement Award was established in 1997 to honor assistant principals that have utilized teamwork and leadership to increase student achievement and greatly improved school environments.

St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent E. Wayne Gent and Board Members recognized this month’s Star Award recipients and honored their outstanding service to students and staff.

Congratulations are extended to Mr. Thomas Giananni from Facilities and Maintenance, Mr. Artavious Carter from Forest Grove Middle Middle, and Ms. Melanie Tate from Lawnwood Elementary.

Each year, the Florida Council for the Social Studies honors educators across the state at their annual conference. Joe Curatolo (Treasure Coast High School), Heather Prince (Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition), and Jacqueline Baptiste-Harris (Village Green Environmental Studies School) were recognized at the 61st annual conference as the Outstanding Social Studies Teachers of the Year for St. Lucie County.
Administrators across the district nominated teachers from their schools to be considered for this honor.  Leadership and drive to bring quality lessons were qualities shared of these educators, and all are well deserving of this recognition.
Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Awards

Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Awards

Martha Underwood, District Volunteer Coordinator, announced the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award Recipients at the school board meeting on March 10, 2015. The Outstanding School Volunteer of the Year for the Youth category went to Sara Ramadan, a 12th grade student from St. Lucie West Centennial High School, who volunteers at Northport K-8 School with the band class. The total number of hours Sara has contributed is 850 hours as of now and more to come.
The Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award for the Adult category went to Jessica Lind from Northport K-8 School. Miss Lind has volunteered in the Little Light House Library and also in the Pre-Engineering Lab. The total number of hours Jessica has contributed is 1200 as of now and more to come.

The Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award for the Senior Category is Maryann Umile from Bayshore Elementary. Maryann arrives at school 45 minutes before school begins to assist Mrs. Hawkins and the other kindergarten teachers as they prepare for the day. When students are at resource, she can be found organizing and filing papers and preparing materials for the next activity. Maryann has volunteered over the past 15 years at Bayshore Elementary School with over 15,000 hours and more to come.

Thank you to all of school volunteers for everything you do for our children in St. Lucie County. It does not matter how much time you can give, it matters that you take the time to give.

The district winners in three categories — Youth, Adult, and Senior — volunteers for the year were honored at the February 14, 2012 St. Lucie County School Board meeting. Oxbow Kicks Off Summer Camps with Biology Bootcamp June 24

PORT ST. LUCIE – Spots are filling up at the Oxbow Eco-Center’s Summer Nature Camps, but there are still some spaces left, starting with the Wildlife Biology Bootcamp, beginning June 24.

Designed for students ages 10-14, the Biology Bootcamp run June 24-28 focusing on science in nature. Campers will conduct their very own wildlife field studies on the Oxbow’s 225 acres of diverse Florida habitat. Throughout the week, they’ll have the opportunity to meet and learn from local biologists, ecologists and nature lovers. 

The Oxbow’s Summer Camp registration is now open. All camps will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the cost is $200 per session.

Campers will participate in activities such as discovery hikes, wetland studies, animal programs, nature inspired S.T.E.M. projects, nature related games, art projects, insect collecting and more. Registration is filling up fast. Other Oxbow camps include:

·        Ecosystem Explorers: July 8 – 12 (ages 6-9)

·        Lego Robotics and Coding Adventure: July 15-19 (ages 8-12) – This camp is currently full, but there is a waiting list.

·        Archery Adventure Camp:  July 22-26 (ages 10-14)

·        The Art of Puppetry:  July 29 – Aug. 2 (ages 8-12)

Students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition participated in a Mismatch Day sponsored by the P.B.I.S. (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) program. Students used their earned rocket fuel for good behavior in the classroom to be able to dress mismatched. Students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently participated in a school wide P.B.I.S. (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) fundraising event.  Students were able to come outside by grade level and participate in Olympic type games.  There were different areas set up with an obstacle course, football toss and field goal kick, soccer, kickball, basketball, flag football and a dance area.  The students went around to each area during the hour.  At the end of the event, all students received a snack, drink, and small trinket with the United States red, white and blue theme.  It was a great turn out and a fun event for all students that participated.

Students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently participated in a P.B.I.S. (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) Raffle.  Students that earned rocket fuel for positive behavior selected what items they wanted to try for in the raffle.

The prizes were McDonald’s Gift Cards, Walmart Gift Cards, a variety of sports balls, pizza parties for the whole class in every grade level and Kindle Fires.  The students pictured below were the winners of the Kindle Fires.  Way to go Rockets!

The Palm Point Educational Research School at Tradition Rocket Jazz Band was recently invited to play at the St. Lucie West Elks Lodge during a luncheon held in honor of the visiting state president of The Elks Association. Palm Point Principal Debra Snyder and assistant principal Latricia Thompson joined members of the community as guests at the special event. The band consists of current and former students who now play in local high school bands. The musical selections consisted of jazz, blues,swing,funk and rock selections. After the performance, the president presented a $500 donation to the Rocket Jazz Band. Palm Pointe First Grade students celebrated their love for reading and learning new vocabulary words by making their assigned word come to life during a vocabulary parade! Students came dressed in a costume that exemplified their word.  They had an opportunity to share their word with family members and other students by marching across the stage and presenting their word to everyone.  We can’t wait to see our rockets use these new words in their speaking and writing.

Recently, Palm Pointe school finalists in the 2015 History Fair from grades six and eight celebrated their achievements in a special ceremony and exhibit gallery.  This year’s theme – Leadership and Legacy – challenged the students to research an individual in history who demonstrated extraordinary leadership in his/her respective field, and left a legacy which impacted future generations.  Students selected one of five project options to showcase their research and historical analysis.  Each finalist’s project was then judged using the National History Day criteria, and a maximum of three students were selected from each category to advance to the district competition.  The St. Lucie County Schools District History Fair will be held at Palm Pointe on Saturday, February 21st from 8:00am to 1:00pm.

Palm Pointe 4th Graders Write in their E”LAB”Oration Stations

On Friday, March 29th, Palm Pointe fourth graders participated in an exciting day of writing e”lab” oration stations.  Students had an opportunity to travel to different stations and refine their writing through various mini-lessons and practice.  They were thrilled to show what they know after working hard all year on the writing process.  Towards the end of the day, students got to participate in a balloon drop that included balloons with positive messages to let them know they can do it.  Students will take their FSA Writing Assessment on Tuesday, April 2nd.

Recently at the Florida Music Educators convention in Tampa the Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition Band was given the state enrollment award. This award recognized them for achieving over 43 percent of the 7th and 8th grade students enrolled in a music course. This award will be held for three years. Congratulations to the Palm Pointe music program!

The Palm Pointe Band received all Superior ratings at the Jazz Band District 13 Florida Bandmasters Association Festival on February 6th.  These ratings are the highest that can be awarded in the state of Florida.  Way to go Rockets, you ROCK!
