Mrs. Jamie Spooner‘s Honors English classes participated in the Great Thanksgiving Listen between the Thanksgiving and Winter Break. This project, developed by NPR and StoryCorps, allowed the students to interview friends, family, and important role models to allow their memory and voice to be saved to the Library of Congress. It helped the students to continue to grow as communicators during their study of American literature.
This year’s District nominee for STEM Sunshine State Scholar is Bailey Magers from Treasure Coast High School.
Bailey, along with his parents and a teacher, who has served as a significant influence to him, will travel to Orlando May 19 – 20, 2016, for an extraordinary two-day program. In addition to bringing together the scholars to be honored, the foundation invites representatives from Florida’s colleges and universities to meet with the students and discuss career and post-secondary opportunities available to them in Florida.

On Monday, January 18, Bayshore students, parents, and staff participated in the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Parade. This year’s theme “Dream Forward: Choose Peace, Equality, and Change” inspired the float design that represented our school.
Northport K-8 School is pleased to present our 2016 Annual Science and Engineering Fair award recipients. Our students competed in numerous fields of science. All awarded scientists based their experimental research on trying to answer and solve real world problems. They showed creativity in scientific thinking and a desire to help mankind by providing solutions to real issues. First, second, and third place awards were given in each category of science.
First place recipients are: Addison Searcy, rosette Garcia, Dana Barcomb, Alicia Morrow, Alexis Bowes, Joseph Jackson, Jaden Rosenberg, Chastine Maharaj, Riley Orr, Taygen Pannella, Estefany Medina, Matthew Pinto and Evence Eliassaint.
Second place recipients are: Jennifer Lugo, Melanie Giachetti, Nixon Adea-Swanston, Dallas Persick, Tristan Castiglia, Jared Lowrie and Illah Sasso.
Third place recipients are: Sierra Molinary, Sasha Levine, Trevor Walk, Brandon Quijada, Kristopher Taylor, Haley Hensley, Justin Forbes and Aaliyah Gutmann.

Third grade students at Bayshore Elementary were visited on Tuesday, Januray 19, by members of the Lions Club. Mr. James Coy and Mrs. Sandra Coy presented our third graders dictionaries as part of a campaign by the local Lions and Rotary Clubs. This year, both clubs have joined to provide all third grades in Saint Lucie County with dictionaries. Our students are very grateful for their generous gesture.
On January 11th, Dyujae (Biko) Gayman scored his 1,000th basketball point as a Lincoln Park Academy Greyhound. The LPA family of students, teachers, staff, and coaches are very proud of his accomplishment. Congratulations Biko!!
Northport K-8 School presented a noteworthy performance at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade held recently in Ft. Pierce. The weather was beautiful and the students, parents, and staff were thrilled to participate in such a wonderful and traditional event to help enhance community relations and mark the day with a flourish. Special thanks to the Northport MLK committee members for working so diligently to make sure that Northport was represented and Martin Luther King’s theme for 2016, “Dream Forward: Choose Peace, Equality, and Change” was uplifted in true Northport fashion. Thanks to Debra Allen, Diane Crumpton, Valerie Hill, Megan Hill, Michelle Kovich, Marie Solide and Christine Davis as well as the Northport Band Director Brian Hoce and everyone else who helped in any way. We had a first-rate float, and the cheerleaders and band students offered a stellar performance. The performance can be viewed on the Northport K-8 School Face Book page. Northport truly promoted the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he said, “We must keep moving. It you can’t fly, run; if you can’t run, walk; if you can’t walk, crawl; but by all means, keep moving!”
A special thanks to Mr. Calhoun, Mr. Smith, and Mr. Lowe from the Rotary Club of Ft. Pierce, who generously presented dictionaries to all third grade students at Frances K. Sweet Elementary Magnet School. They were greatly appreciated!
Ms. Debra Snyder, Principal at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition along with Debborah Estrada, Dean of Discipline and Chairperson of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee proudly accept the Second Place trophy for Kindness Week. Palm Pointe’s school-wide project involved collecting over 840 teddy bears from students and staff . The “Teddies for Tots” were given to Sheriff Mascara to give out to children in crisis throughout the community.

On Monday, January 18, 2016, students and staff at St. Lucie Elementary honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by participating in the MLK Parade. The parade commemorates the life of civil rights leader and icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Students and staff participated in the Parade with signs in hand to celebrate in remembrance of his outstanding achievements and how they changed the course of history. SLE students continue to be active in their community and strive to maintain Dr. King’s vision.
Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition would like to thank all the students and staff who donated the 850 plus teddy bears for the Teddies for Tots Drive. This project was done during Kindness Week. The bears were donated to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department, and Sheriff Mascara came out to Palm Pointe to pick up all the bears. These bears will be given to children in crisis throughout our community. Pictured with administration is Sheriff Mascara and several deputies in his department. Also pictured are students from Alison Perry’s fourth grade class who donated over sixty bears were there to present them all to the Sheriff.
On Friday, January 15, fourth grade students attended a presentation by the Port Saint Lucie Botanical Gardens and the Keep Port Saint Lucie Beautiful about Arbor Day and the Fourth Grade Foresters Program. Students learned about growing a Sabal Palm and received their own Sabal Palm to take and plant at home. The trees were generously donated by Keep Port Saint Lucie Beautiful and Waste Pro.
ST. LUCIE COUNTY – Voluntary pre-kindergarten (VPK) and kindergarten educators from across the District will convene on Fort Pierce Central High School’s campus for the Kaleidoscope of Movement Conference on Saturday, January 30, 2016. A wide array of talent development sessions will target early learning needs for four to six-year-old children with special sessions designed to support important learning opportunities for infants and toddlers. A strong early learning initiative has grown in St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) for the last four years through the District’s partnership with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. When asked why early learning is important to the overall educational needs of children, Early Childhood Coordinator Dr. Huffstetter stated that children who receive high-quality early learning experiences and opportunities experience greater success in kindergarten and in their subsequent school careers. “This is why we feel it is so important to provide on-going opportunities to learn and collaborate with one another. We want the very best for our children.”
SLPS supports 18 Title One VPK classrooms and the District works hand in hand with the Early Learning Coalition and ALPI Head Start to support consistent instructional practices and provide quality resources for teaching and learning. The VPK Program is a free prekindergarten program for four-year-olds who reside in Florida and were born on or before September 1.

Congratulations to Gaines Academy students: Lorena Ramirez-Garcia, Sedre Wright, Brandon Davis, and Nira Troublefield for being selected to the Indian River State College’s Four County Honor Band. The Four County Honor Band is comprised of students from St. Lucie, Indian River, Martin, and Okeechobee Counties. These students will spend roughly 15 hours over the course of three days in rehearsal with guest clinician Dr. Shelby Chipman, Associate Professor of Music at Florida A&M University, and perform a concert at the end of the clinic.
The SLWK-8 4th Grade students recently took a field trip to Ft. Christmas and Alligator World. The students learned about how pioneers lived in early Florida and were able to grind corn and churn butter. Then they traveled to Alligator World where they observed animals in their natural habitats and explored the tools used by native Americans and settlers to survive in Florida.
Northport K-8 School held their annual Spelling Bee recently in the school media center. Students from grades four through eight who won their classroom spelling bees were able to move forward and participate in the school based spelling bee. Parent attendance was plentiful and each spelling bee participant was able to bring one student guest from their class. Students moved through six rounds with Americorp Tutor Azzam Abdur-Rahman calling the words and tutors Barbara Despinos and Tessa Falatovich serving as judges. Students showed an impressive knowledge of spelling this year as they used rules and strategies to make excellent spelling connections. Many students asked for the word in a sentence, the language of origin and the part of speech as well as palm writing to become better bee participants.
The Northport Grand Spelling Champion for 2016 is Jennifer Tufte, a fifth grader, and second place went to Sierra Molinary, an eighth grader. Both girls will represent Northport at the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee at the Civic Center in March. Participants were Julian Moldonado, Samuel Guillen, Honeylette Ricalde, Alex Uy, Skylar Warner, Pierre Dentilus, Diego Lopez, Giovanni Wright, Anthony Serrano, Elijah Yuhas, Ellen Garcia, Dorian Jessee, Jordan Braden, Jesus Gonzalez, Jayden Diago, Jennifer Tufte, Jake Jones, Marilla Cruce, Alexander Hernandez, Matt Pinto, Jared Lowrie, Sierra Molinary, Andrevious Collins, Mya James, Davon Charles, NAthaniel Oliver, Zachary Cummings, Dudley Olibrice and Dakota Davis.
