Second grade students’ behavior in Sherrie McLemore’s class is reinforced through the “Gift Giving Tree.” As the students are following the PBS school-wide expectations of Responsibility, Safety and Respect they receive positive praise and are given a Gator Buck. When they receive two Gator Bucks they may trade them in for a gift ticket which go into a jar and the teacher randomly draws tickets throughout the day. The students are able to choose a gift from off of or under the tree. The tree is loaded with gifts such as books, pens, pencils, candy, stickers, puzzles and much more! The Kindergarten students in Mr. Zakrajsek’s class are shown working hard. They are using a Dr. Spencer Kagan strategy called Rally-Robin to orally communicate the rules and expectations to their friends. The students have also used this strategy to meet their new friends and describe themselves to one another. Throughout the year they will use this strategy to communicate what they have learned throughout each lesson. The students are very excited to be able to discuss what they know with their friends. The students will also learn more valuable Kagan strategies to help facilitate their learning and help their oral communication skills as they work through their challenging year in Kindergarten.
Allapattah Flats kindergartners are becoming super sleuths using Secret Stories. The students learned about what happens when the letters t and h are side by side in a word. Then, they practiced sticking out their tongues to make the “thhhhhh!” sound. Lastly, the students used letter Legos to build words that begin or end with th. Kindergarten students are very eager and motivated to celebrate the winter season. They each labeled a snowflake with a book they are reading from the school library. It is fun to see the enthusiasm as they read books and share them with the class. Students proudly display the number of books they read on the kindergarten hallway bulletin board.
The kindergarten students at Allapattah Flats K8 recently participated in an apple tasting. The students made predictions about which apple they would like best. Then, they tasted green, red, and yellow apples. Lastly, the students made a chart to tell which apple was their first, second and third choice. The tasting activity provided an opportunity to use descriptive language: juicy, sour, sweet, delicious, and crunchy. Kindergarten students enjoyed connecting literature across the curriculum. After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, the students learned sequencing, days of the week, and the butterfly life cycle. Students will proudly display their work on the kindergarten bulletin board. The Allapattah Flats K-8 School kindergartners had a great start of the school year. Students did many activities related to school and classroom rules, took a tour of their new school and met many of the great staff. The students were also asked to bring in items in a small lunch bag that would tell their friends something special about “me”. They were all eager to share their special story using the microphone. Staff and administration team members at Allapattah Flats carved turkeys and the cafeteria staff made homemade sides for a special Thanksgiving meal for the students and staff.
Mary Fuller’s sixth and seventh grade math students from Allapattah Flats K-8 are gearing up for FCAT. Her class project was called “Wrap Your Head Around FCAT”. Mrs. Fuller provided hats for her students to create personalized hats with messages relating to the FCAT Reference Sheet and other mathematical expressions they have learned throughout the year. Students in Marsha Reese’s sixth grade Language Arts classes at Allapatah Flats K-8 read the novel Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. After completing an evaluation of the character relationships and their impact on the conflict in the novel, the students used their character analysis to design projects that would show how the novel ‘s characters (set in 1933 Mississippi) would fare in present day society. Allapattah Flats K-8 middle grades students recently learned how erosion and deposition have formed the landscape around us. Seventh grade students studied plate tectonics, while eighth grade students finished up space. To review and prepare for FCAT over the next couple of weeks, the students are doing labs. Students completed a running lab where they found their speed, velocity, momentum, acceleration, force and work. Students also created simple machines using a few household objects. Stacey Mulder’s sixth grade students at Allapattah Flats are sending out New Year’s letters to friends and family members across the states and many different countries. Students used the correct form to write a friendly letter. Students included words of cheer, encouragement and even expressed holiday wishes. Letters were mailed in hopes of sharing the holiday spirit. At Allapattah Flats K8, students in Melinda Van Der Werff’s creative writing class wrote and illustrated books for Shannon Johnson’s third grade students. The eighth graders read their stories to their third grade buddies over cookies. The third graders loved hearing the books as much as the eighth graders enjoyed making them. Parents of first grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 listen attentively as Craig Perry from Huntington Learning Center gives a “Homework Helper” presentation. Mr. Perry explained the importance of having a special place to do homework, how to handle your child’s frustration with homework, and reinforced the importance of parents working with teachers as partners in their child’s education. Allapattah Flats K8 School congratulates four students who have been recognized as 2011 Florida’s Young Scholars Award Recipients. The noted students join nearly 2500 3rd-8th graders from across Florida that received such acclaim. Hundreds of schools participated in the project to select and honor students who not only excel academically but show that they are well-rounded individuals. The stupendous second graders at Allapattah Flats are going wild! The students recently enjoyed a visit from Miss Tracy of the Hobe Sound Nature Center. While engaged in the program, the students learned about such topics as why protecting the rainforest is important, conservation, and animals and their habitats. Students in Crystal Carrington and Bridget Valinote’s seventh grade classes were excited to attend a field trip to Rave Cinema to see the new movie The Hunger Games. Students had just finished reading the book in their reading class, so they were able to extend their learning by comparing and contrasting elements of the book to the movie. The votes are in that the book was better than the movie and gave so much more detail! Students are now very motivated to read the sequel Catching Fire. Students and teachers at Allapattah Flats K-8 recently participated in the “Stand Out to Stand Up” district event. The whole school turned pink as everyone wore pink shirts to show that they do not tolerate bullying. Students also made posters and short skits to show how to handle bullying and ways to prevent it. Dean Renee Adderly-Clark took the lead on this event, promoting students’ involvement and helping them put together presentations shown throughout lunch periods for students at all grade levels.
Second Grade students, Anthony Smith , Judith Tellez Cruz, Jeilin Hernandez, Corby Henderson, at Allapattah Flats K8 School are engaged in the hands-on learning of animal needs and habitats during their recent STEM Challenge. The students enjoyed the activity of building a sanctuary habitat for a group of displaced sloths. The students were able to explore the challenge of being a zoo builder and architect as they learned about the needs and habitat requirements for a sloth.
Ms. Mellion’s students at Allapattah Flats K-8 were engaged in African American History Month using informational texts about Jackie Robinson. Students worked together in groups to become experts on certain parts of his life. They presented to the class their circle maps as well as shared facts they had researched about him. Second graders loved learning about this important historical figure in American History.
