Fort Pierce Central High School Key Club members attended their District Conference for the first time in the club’s history. The Florida District Education and Leadership Conference (DCON) is the culmination of the Key Club year and was held in Daytona, Florida for 4 days. This annual event is attended by over 2,000 students and chaperones from clubs all over Florida and the Caymon Islands. DCON features educational workshops for club members and advisors, caucusing and election of district officers, endorsements of international candidates, motivational speakers, social events, and individual and club awards. Students at Oak Hammock K8 School participated in an after school PBiS event. To participate in this activity, students had to have earned 10 Osprey dollars and have no referrals for an allotted period. Students enjoyed dancing, a tattoo station, arts and crafts, pizza, and cupcakes. A good time was had by all who participated.
Students in 3rd – 5th grade have started a unit entitled What Can AI Do? They will be exploring a variety of AI technologies to establish a strong foundational knowledge about what AI is, how AI works, and how AI technologies might be used to help people. Students will be exploring several examples of AI programs to consider what tasks AI does well and which tasks AI does not do well. Students from Oak Hammock K8 participated in Career and Technical Education (CTE) showcase with students from middle and high schools across St. Lucie Public Schools. The Showcase was all about Entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial mindset. The CTE classroom is a perfect place for teaching these skills, since CTE teachers already cover many lessons and projects in entrepreneurship. The categories were New Food truck concept, E-commerce, 3D Printing, Welding, Artistic creation, and Middle School Entrepreneurship. On Wednesday, April 24th at 6:30 PM, the Port St. Lucie High School JROTC Jaguar Battalion hosted our Annual Change of Command Ceremony, Relinquishing the current Battalion Commander c/LTC Michael Coccaro of his duty and welcoming c/LTC Tamiya Ferguson to command and lead the Jaguar Battalion on a successful path for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. The Change of Command is a simple traditional event that is rich with symbolism and heritage. Congratulations to the Palm Pointe Jazz Band. They participated in the Lakeside Jazz Festival in Port Orange Florida. Out of 19 bands they took home trophies for the Best Overall Rhythm Section, Best Overall Trombone Section as well as Overall Best Band at the festival. They also received a superior rating. The students were pleased to see their hard work pay off and are looking forward to more jazz growth!
On Friday, April 19th, the Cadets from the Fort Pierce Westwood Army JROTC put the lid on a long and demanding year of extracurricular commitments and teamwork-based missions with their Annual Cadet Ball, held at the historical 500 Orange Event Hall in Fort Pierce. On Friday, April 19th, students from St. Lucie West Centennial High School, St. Lucie West K-8, Northport K-8, Westgate K-8, and Rivers Edge Elementary came to the district office to participate in the creation of a permanent art installation on the new Port St. Lucie Library. The students worked with the artist Justin Shea to create Henri Matisse-inspired cut-outs which will be turned into mosaic tiles on the exterior of the new library.
Let’s give a big shout-out to our Army JROTC Cadets who participated in the Port St. Lucie 29th Annual “Caring Community Clean-Up Day” on Saturday, 13 APR. Our Cadets provided a helping hand to the “Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful” organization which strives to improve our quality of life through environmental education, area beautification, urban transformation, and litter control. They worked from 7:30 am until 1 pm in various parts of Port St. Lucie, collecting HUNDREDS of pounds of litter. Students across the county researched historical topics and public policy issues in their secondary social studies classrooms. Schools selected their top projects to advance to the district competitions to represent their schools. February 23rd was the 32nd annual History Day fair in which 93 middle and high school students were invited to the district office to showcase a historical research project. Their topics aligned with this year’s national theme of Turning Points in History and were displayed in either an exhibit, website, documentary, performance, or research paper format. Palm Pointe students got to enjoy a Family Baseball Night at Clover Park! Students watched the baseball game, Assistant Principal Mr.Keelor got to throw the first pitch, our middle school Vocal Vision choir sang the National Anthem, our elementary chorus sang “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” during the 7th inning stretch, and students had the opportunity to the run the bases after the game.
