During Women’s History Month, CAST students in kindergarten, first, and second grade used their creativity to honor artistic women in innovative ways. Kindergarteners researched Frida Kahlo’s life and legacy; they observed her many beautiful self-portraits and how she always wore ornate clothing, jewelry, and flowers in her hair. Morningside Elementary School fifth-grader Amelia Sides has always loved art, and now her art will be displayed on ART (Area Regional Transit)! Amelia’s watercolor painting, “River”, was chosen to adorn a new public transit bus or van in St. Lucie County. She attended a reception at the Civic Center on March 24th where her art was unveiled to the public. Be on the lookout for Amelia’s art moving around the county on a bus!

Three of our Lakewood Park Elementary Falcons were treated to a delicious lunch today courtesy of Texas Roadhouse in St. Lucie West. These fifth-graders were rewarded because they earned a perfect score of 10 on the FSA Writes last year when they were fourth-grade Falcons. Fourth and Fifth graders, stay tuned to find out about what the reward will be for students earning a perfect score on the writing assessment this year! Way to go Falcons!!

Lawnwood students enjoyed guest reader day. Local members of the Daughters of the American Revolution read “If I Had Your Vote” by Dr. Seuss to celebrate reading.

CAST eighth-graders in Mr. Barnes’ class rocked the science fair held at Indian River State College. Their experiments ranged from fertilizer comparisons, hydraulic can dispensers, ice insulators, and natural oil products for hair to just name a few! Eighth-grade students Hannah Rios and Lauryn Rodriguez were awarded 2nd place in their category as well as the Cleveland Clinic Biomedical Award for their outstanding Biomedical project. Sidonie Gordon-Tucker and Amaya Ethridge received 2nd place awards in the Plant category, while Allison Buchmeyer and Marcella Gardini-DaSilva received a special award from SAAVAS Realize for their project in environmental science.  

Second grade teachers Sabrina Faniel from West Gate and Sharline William from Savanna Ridge, collaborated on a multi-month project where their students wrote to one another during literacy centers. Students were paired with a pen pal with whom they would exchange letters. They learned to make new friends while improving their writing skills along the way. They were able to finally meet their pen pals just before spring break. The two classes took a field trip to a local park where they met, exchanged additional letters in person, and played together. Over spring break, Fairlawn Elementary’s Odyssey of the Mind team competed at the state tournament.  The team worked together well and performed amazingly, earning them a 3rd place finish and a trip to the world competition in Iowa in May.  Way to go Patriots!

Mariposa Elementary VPK students are practicing discussing options, how to problem solve, how to use trial and error, and most importantly, how to be cooperative. Mrs. Claudia Bonilla’s VPK students defined the words, provided examples, saw a video, and listened to a Sesame Street song. They cut 5 pieces out of each rectangle to make it look like a puzzle. Then they had to draw, color, and decorate their pieces. Students from Mrs. Hammett’s class and Ms. McGowan’s class are using an incubator to incubate avian embryos growing inside fertile eggs. Through this project, students are learning biology and life science as they eagerly look forward to hatching chicks.

Mrs. Percy’s students created an interactive Kindness Wall with her 1st and 5th graders in hopes to spread more kindness! This interactive wall helps students to remember kind words or demonstrating kind actions. Mrs. Percy has taught her students the difference between kind and nice. Students created a Circle Map to brainstorm ways to show kindness and then watched a video to expound on details. Students reflect weekly to identify one act of kindness (verbal/action) they have demonstrated. Each week, they are given a post-it note(s) to add to our Kindness Board.
