St. Lucie West Centennial High School students from Mrs. Angela Baumgarten and Mr. James Nichols’ Law Academy (Criminal Justice) participated in a live drone demonstration. Members from the St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office Drone team led this demonstration, along with an engaging conversation with students on the use of technology and legalities surrounding the use of unmanned aircraft in law enforcement. Deputies David Leigh (School Resource, Explorers Advisor, Swim instructor, and Drone Pilot) and Trevor Boyce (Drone Pilot and Road Patrol) were the guest speakers and led the presentation. .
Students from Mrs. Hammett’s class and Ms. McGowan’s class are using an incubator to incubate avian embryos growing inside fertile eggs. Through this project, students are learning biology and life science as they eagerly look forward to hatching chicks.
Samuel Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies kindergarten has officially started their March Madness sight word fun!!! For each word a student earns, they will get to take one shot. With every three shots they earn, they move up on the winner’s bracket until we have a sight word champion!
Mrs. Percy’s students created an interactive Kindness Wall with her 1st and 5th graders in hopes to spread more kindness! This interactive wall helps students to remember kind words or demonstrating kind actions. Mrs. Percy has taught her students the difference between kind and nice. Students created a Circle Map to brainstorm ways to show kindness and then watched a video to expound on details. WEST Prep earned straight Superior ratings for the Chorus and Women’s Ensemble in performance and sight reading on their MPAs (Musical Performance Assessments). They are headed to the state competition.
5th grade Mariposa Elementary students participated in a “Day in Court” to argue their opinion papers for writing. Prosecuting attorneys argued against a topic, Defense attorneys argued for and each side had to provide supporting evidence to convince the jury of their reasoning. Jury members followed a rubric for evidence, discussed the outcomes of the arguments, then shared the verdict with the “Judge” of which side provided the strongest case. A great day of learning!
St. Lucie Medical Center’s physicians and medical residents hosted a virtual DEI forum for St. Lucie Public School’s Health Science, Pharmacy Technician, and Veterinarian Assisting students. Students were engaged in a presentation and discussion on steps to take academically in accomplishing their goals to become a physician. Thank you to Dr. Tim McNamara, Dr. Kara Mann, Dr. Josephin Mathai, Dr. David Nguyen, and Dr. Thomas Matese for putting this session together for Career and Technical Education students and being a sustained business partner.
The WEST Prep band received 2 Superiors and 2 Excellents with an overall rating of Superior at their MPAs (Musical Performance Assessments). The band has qualified for State. The WEST Prep Auxiliary also qualified for State. Four solos received Excellent rating and the Group Ensemble received Superior Rating.
Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies 7th grader, Yeilianis Nicol Torres won first place in the Microbiology category of the St. Lucie County STEM Fair! Her project, “Where Are the Germs” investigates where the truly dirtiest locations are in a school. She will be continuing on to the state competition in Lakeland, Florida.
The time and effort our Ag panthers put in each year is impressive and this year it all paid off. While all exhibitors from FFA and 4H from across the area did an incredible job, WEST Prep swept the top awards and we could not be more proud of them. Weatherbee students and staff celebrated Read Across America and Dr. Suess by reading on the morning show. Mariners enjoyed dressing up in their Dr. Suess inspired shirts, hats, and outfits.
