Night of Family Learning at Oak Hammock K-8

Grade 3 through 8 Oak Hammock K-8 families participated in a collaboratively hosted event by Title 1 and the SLPS Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) department. The event focused on Social and Emotional Learning strategies to enhance the well-being at home during the FSA testing season. Participants learned how Oak Hammock is implementing SEL at school and rotated to different stations so students and their families could practice different strategies for use at home. Pop-Up Museum at Village Green Environmental Studies School

Village Green Media Specialist, Janet Sievers is excited to be hosting the Mel Fisher Maritime Pop-Up Museum again this year. This year the Museum is titled Overcoming Outbreaks. The students can easily relate to the topic on Covid-19 as they have lived through it. They are learning how this is not the first outbreak in history. Through their Media Class, the other topics in the museum included Bubonic Plague, Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Smallpox, Tuberculosis, and Hog Cholera.

Mariposa Elementary Partners with Port Saint Lucie High School Drama Students

Mariposa Elementary 5th graders performed their show of Broadway musicals with the help of their drama coaches from Port St. Lucie High School. For more than 20 years, PSLHS drama students have partnered with Mariposa students to choreograph popular Broadway songs.  The 5th graders shine as they perform the songs for other grade levels as well as their parents.

Nursing Assistant Students Visit Keiser University, Port St. Lucie Campus

Students enrolled in one of the Nursing Assistant programs within St. Lucie Public Schools were at Keiser University (Tradition Campus) for a full day of simulated learning.  All participating students were given a tour of the campus, worked with college professors and nursing students, gained knowledge on the application process, along with financial aid and scholarship opportunities.  The highlight for all participating students was working side-by-side for simulated clinical level training on advanced medical equipment.  Students completed hands-on learning and demonstrations in various programs including Psychology, Dietetics & Nutrition, Exercise Science, Sports Management, Respiratory Therapy, Nursing, Medical Assisting, and Biomedical … Read More

CAST Crystallographers

Sixth Grade students in Mrs. Proctor’s and Mrs. Albers’ classes have been learning about famous female scientists for Woman’s History Month. Rosalind Franklin was a crystallographer who studied the structures of DNA, RNA, coal, and graphite.  The students grew crystals to understand the structure of them and Ms. Franklin’s contribution as a scientist.

Parkway Elementary Hosts a SEL Family Night!

Parkway Elementary, in collaboration with the SEL Department and the 21st Century Afterschool Program hosted a family SEL Night. Lauren Kappler, the district’s Social and Emotional Parent Educator visited and educated parents both in person and virtually. The main goal of the night was for families to learn about the five Social-Emotional competencies and what Social-Emotional Learning looks like at Parkway. K-5 Lawnwood students enjoyed a literacy event. Students and staff enjoyed reading their favorite book while basking in the sunshine. It was a lovely day for outdoor reading.  

Reaching for the Moon at CAST

Our first graders have been having so much fun learning about the sun, moon, and different things we can see during the day and night sky! After reading many stories about the sun and moon, we wrote important key details that we learned on our fun craft!

Oak Hammock K-8 Students Raise Autism Acceptance

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Oak Hammock K-8 students learn during SEL about Autism Awareness and Acceptance. Students in the 7th Grade Raptors team worked collaboratively, applying their SEL skills they have learned throughout the school year, to create an Autism Awareness Mosaic. Students also wrote a fact or a quote to help raise awareness and acceptance for individuals on the Autism Spectrum. The 7th Grade Raptors pod wore blue to help raise awareness and acceptance for individuals on the Autism Spectrum.

Historic Achievement at Florida State Drill Meet

On Saturday, April 2nd, the Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion participated in the Florida State Drill Championship at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland, FL. Our Female and Male team competed against 90+ schools in Unarmed/Armed Squad, Unarmed/Armed Platoon, Color Guard, Solo/Dual, and Squad and Platoon Exhibition Drill for the chance to take home a trophy at the state level. Medal of Honor Day at CAST 

Kindergarteners at CAST learned about the Medal of Honor and discussed all the ways we can be good citizens at school and at home. Students read a variety of literature stories and responded to these texts. We promise to be super citizens! 

Dell Innovator Program at Mariposa Elementary

Mariposa Elementary welcomed the Dell Innovators program led by media specialist, Wendy Munao. In this technology-infused enrichment course, students assembled presentations of various subjects utilizing tools such as email, OneNote, Padlet, Canvas, Sway, PowerPoint, Flipgrid, Forms, and Stream. The mission of this project-based learning program was for students to develop enough fluency with the technology tools to be able to carry on without teacher guidance. This autonomy will help foster students’ self- efficiency and confidence as they prepare for a future that frequently engages with the digital world. SLWK8 8th Grader Headed to State History Fair

A BIG SHARK CONGRATULATIONS goes to 8th grade student, Aiden Triana from St. Lucie West K-8 School for qualifying for his History Fair project. Only eleven students were chosen throughout the District, and Aiden’s documentary about the Bay of Pigs Invasion will now be in the running for a State History Fair Project award. JAWSOME JOB, AIDEN! WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!  

7-Eleven Celebrates Grand Opening with Donation

To celebrate the grand opening of their newest store on Orange Avenue in Ft. Pierce, community partner 7-Eleven gifted a generous donation of $711 to C.A. Moore Elementary. In attendance was SLPS board member Debbie Hawley, who was joined by C.A. Moore principal Dr. Thelma Jackson and assistant principals Alisha Kennedy and Makeda Brome. Thank you to 7-Eleven for their support of our schools!

CAST Fine Art Classes Celebrate Women in Art

Elementary music students learned about Evelyn Glinney, a deaf percussionist who composed music and would take her shoes off to feel the vibrations of her songs. Students played drums to feel vibrations. Middle School visual art students studied works of art by Helen Frakenthaler who was famous for using non-traditional tools in her paintings. Students then explored different techniques to express themselves in this abstract way. Middle school dance students dedicated several dances in their spring show to renowned artist, Janet Jackson.

CAST Fifth-Graders Honor Artistic Women of The Past, Present, and Future

In honor of Women’s History Month, fifth-grade students at CAST collaborated to create a banner honoring women in the arts. Students researched notable women in the fields of visual and performing arts. Their pennants included important life events, life lessons, and traits that led to their success. As a result of studying notable women of our past and present, the students discovered great things can come from adversity when they believe in their own abilities and the abilities of those around them and that they, too, can become notable artists of the future.  

Read Across America at CAST

Students at CAST celebrated Read Across America Day! Kindergartners did an author study on Eric Carle; they are hungry for reading! First graders recognized the amazing diversity in stories and wrote about what makes them special. Third graders went for a reading picnic and read outside.  

CAST Sixth-Graders Create Self Portraits

During Women’s History Month, sixth-graders in Ms. Kenny’s English Language Arts classes learned about and researched female artists known for their self-portraits. Students wrote their own, “I am” poem, and created self-portraits with a unique and artistic twist. The final product was a fusion of language and art materials, creating a unique self-expression.
