Florida International University (Center for Translational Science) Offers Internship for SLPS Students

Florida International University held a summer internship program for students from St. Lucie Public Schools. There were ten students selected. This internship was a 5-week biomedical research training at Florida International University (FIU) Center for Translational Sciences (CTS) from June 5th – July 14th. Students conducted research in areas spanning the biosciences, biomedicine, and data science. They were able to master basic research techniques, develop scientific reading and writing skills, and communicate challenging scientific concepts to general audiences. Parents and 6th Grade Students SOAR at Southern Oaks

Southern Oaks Middle School hosted its 6th-grade transition camp to throngs of parents and students. On Wednesday, July 25th, the SOMS campus hosted two well-attended sessions for welcoming incoming 6th graders and their families, one in the morning and one in the evening. Attendees were able to see the inner workings of their new school. They were also able to meet and spend intimate time with key individuals and the campus. College and Career Development Workshop Series: What Parents Need to Know

St. Lucie Public Schools’ Office of Teaching and Learning has launched a College and Career Development Workshop Series: What Parents Need to Know.  These workshops are geared for parents of 9th-12th grade students. Sailing into Kindergarten at WBE

Weatherbee Elementary welcomed their incoming Kindergarten Mariners during a “Sailing into Kindergarten” themed event.  Parents and students met their teachers, new Principal, and other staff members.  After learning about the school’s expectations, schedules, curriculum, and much more, each student received a Take Home Learning Kit for Literacy and Math.  The students were so excited, and the parents were thankful for these free tools to help them support their children’s learning at home.  Finally, they visited their classrooms and made a sailboat craft.

SLW Centennial Student Spends the Day with The Bug Bite Thing CEO to Learn About Entrepreneurship

During the Career Connect Conference, SLW Centennial High School student Janelle Palmer won a day with Kelley Higney, CEO of The Bug Bite Thing, a $40 million St. Lucie company that appeared on Shark Tank. Janelle took advantage of the opportunity over the summer and had the opportunity to spend the day learning firsthand about entrepreneurship and running a multi-million dollar business.

Lakewood Park Summer Visits

Lakewood Park staff made some very special summer visits. Staff members hopped on a school bus and dropped off backpacks with summer supplies and food, as well as celebrated all students scoring a level 5! A huge shoutout to Transportation for supplying a school bus to transport our staff members, supplies, and yard signs!  Congrats to all our Falcons for their hard work this year preparing for state testing. We are so proud of you!

Child Nutrition Services Baker’s Training

Did you know that each of our school’s cafeterias has a dedicated baker to make fresh baked menu items for our students? Last week our bakers were hard at work training to ensure the highest quality products are served at each of our schools. All of our bakeries are made with whole wheat and comply with the National School Lunch Program guidelines.

Fort Pierce Central Alumni & Criminal Justice Academy Completer Giving Back to Community

Ms. Hanson, a Fort Pierce Central High School graduate and Criminal Justice Academy program completer is now giving back to her community.  While in high school, Ms. Hanson earned her Accredited Legal Professional (ALP) industry certification.  Ms. Hanson then went on to Keiser University and earned her degree in Paralegal Studies.  She also became a certified Paralegal.  Working now on the Treasure Coast, she is also a member of the Keiser University Advisory Board committee under the leadership of Dr. Record, where she is giving back to the community and schools.  

FPWA Hosts Special Olympic Events

Students in Mr. Norcia’s & Mrs. Cooper’s class competed in the Special Olympics! They utilized teamwork, sportsmanship and lots of effort. Teachers and students had a great time. Thank you to Mr. Norcia for organizing this wonderful event and the student volunteers who also participated!

Congratulations to the Class of 2023! Last week, Superintendent Dr. Jon R. Prince, joined by Board Chairman Troy Ingersoll, Board Vice Chairman Debbie Hawley, Board Member Jack Kelly, Board Member Jennifer Richardson, Board Member Dr. Donna Mills, and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Helen Wild celebrated the graduating classes of 2023 at Lawnwood Stadium this year with over 3,000 students walking across the stage to receive their diplomas. Graduation is the culminating event that celebrates and recognizes the achievement of each graduate. FPWA JROTC Students Honor Fallen Service Members

The FPWA JROTC Program worked with members from Fort Pierce VFW Post 8058 to place approximately 500 American Flags on the graves of past service members at Riverview Memorial Park in Fort Pierce. It was such an honor to be a part of this mission, in recognizing those who sacrificed so much in defense of our Nation. FPWA JROTC Cadets Partner with Lakewood Park Elementary for Scavenger Hunt

Cadets from the FPWA JROTC program traveled to Lakewood Park Elementary to work with Ms. Witkamp’s 3rd grade class on another Skills Enhancement Activity. Our Cadets were put into teams with the students, then they participated in a 10-Station “Mental and Physical Scavenger Hunt” designed to promote teamwork and improve problem-solving skills by making it fun. Teams had to complete a physical exercise and mental activity at each station before advancing to the next event. FPWA Celebrates Seniors with Graduation Walks

Graduating seniors participated in our first Graduation Walks to our local elementary schools. We celebrated and shared their success of reaching this amazing achievement of receiving their high school diploma. We went to White City Elementary, St. Lucie Elementary, Lakewood Park Elementary, and Chester A. Moore Elementary. It was especially wonderful to revisit the schools that they went to when they were younger. Thank you to the students and staff for cheering on our Panthers as they reach this huge milestone! 🎓
