Southern Oaks Gives Students a Red-Carpet Welcome

Students at Southern Oaks Middle School received a welcome back to school worthy of celebrities and dignitaries. Teachers and staff rolled out a red carpet for students complete with fanfare, pom-poms, music, lights, and cameras. Yards upon yards of red carpet rolled for lengthy stretches, one from the bus loop and another stretched from the front gate as students took their first step on campus for the 2023-2024 school year. Lakewood Park Elementary Community Partnerships

Lakewood Park was honored to be selected by Big Apple Ministry for their student Back to School supply drive. Supplies were collected at St. Bernadette’s Catholic church during the entire month of July.  Principal Melrose had the honor of speaking at several services to thank Big Apple Ministry for choosing Lakewood Park and to share the great things about Lakewood Park students, teachers, and families. Transportation Support at C.A. Moore

Mrs. Berggren (A.P.), Mr. De La Rosa, and Mr. Joseph (ESOL Paraprofessionals) of Chester A. Moore Elementary assisted parents and families with bus information during Open House. They provided bus routes, bus stops, pick-up and drop-off times, Here Comes the Bus app directions, and other useful information regarding student transportation. If families did not have a bus route yet, they also assisted families with registering for one.

FREE/Low Cost Internet Services Sign-Up Event

Comcast’s “Internet Essentials” is geared to those who have at least one child that receives free school lunches through the National School Lunch Program. Other criteria include being located where Comcast offers Internet service, not having subscribed to Comcast Internet service within the last 90 days, and not having an overdue Comcast bill or unreturned equipment. This sign-up event will be held August 23th, 4-6 PM at the Havert Fenn Center, 2000 Virginia Avenue, Fort Pierce, Florida 34982. Child Nutrition Services Back to School Training

Last week, over 300 of our food service staff attended a back-to-school training at the MidFlorida Event Center. We had break-out sessions for our managers, cooks, bakers, and food service assistants. Leadership, food safety, standardized recipes, and teamwork were the major topics discussed. SLPS Participates in Project ELITE

St. Lucie Public Schools Pre-K – 3rd-grade teachers, paraprofessionals, and staff participated in the University of Central Florida’s Project ELITE – English Learner Infused Training and Experience. Project ELITE  prepares teachers, paraprofessionals, and educational leaders to implement evidence-based English learner instructional strategies and parent, family, and community engagement strategies.

Port St. Lucie High School Marching Jaguars Bond at Band Camp!

The Marching Jaguars had an incredible start to the season with a challenging, productive, and fun band camp!  This time is an opportunity for the band to solely focus on growing musically and as a team, as well as begin working on our 2023 Field Production, “Mythos”.  They had a blast and are looking forward to another stellar season.    

LPA 6th Grade Transition Camp 2023 ~ Simply the Best

On July 27th, Lincoln Park Academy hosted its incoming 6th-grade Transition Camp. Incoming students and parents were welcomed to campus by the proud Principal, Dr. Herrington. Information concerning scheduling, electives, dress code, and cell phone usage was reviewed during the opening session. Students and parents participated in a guided tour of the campus facilitated by the LPA Theater Entourage. Finally, members of the outstanding 6th-grade team provided tips for success as the students transition to middle school. These tips included communication, organization, and grading differences. Southport Welcomes 6th Grade Students

Southport Middle School enthusiastically welcomed its 6th-grade students on July 26th and 27th. Over the course of two days, students participated in a welcoming camp where they engaged in a school scavenger hunt to learn the layout of the land, participated in team-building games, competed in relay races, designed t-shirts, and asked questions to 7th and 8th-grade students to get a better understanding of what to expect in middle school.

The Treasure Coast AFJROTC, POW/MIA Honor Guard was asked to travel to Chicago this past summer by the Folds of Honor National Organization for their gala held in the Aon Grand Ballroom at the Navy Pier. Folds of Honor raises money as a non-profit organization providing thousands of scholarships each year to children of wounded and fallen service members and first responders. Florida International University (Center for Translational Science) Offers Internship for SLPS Students

Florida International University held a summer internship program for students from St. Lucie Public Schools. There were ten students selected. This internship was a 5-week biomedical research training at Florida International University (FIU) Center for Translational Sciences (CTS) from June 5th – July 14th. Students conducted research in areas spanning the biosciences, biomedicine, and data science. They were able to master basic research techniques, develop scientific reading and writing skills, and communicate challenging scientific concepts to general audiences. Parents and 6th Grade Students SOAR at Southern Oaks

Southern Oaks Middle School hosted its 6th-grade transition camp to throngs of parents and students. On Wednesday, July 25th, the SOMS campus hosted two well-attended sessions for welcoming incoming 6th graders and their families, one in the morning and one in the evening. Attendees were able to see the inner workings of their new school. They were also able to meet and spend intimate time with key individuals and the campus. St. Lucie Public Schools’ Office of Teaching and Learning has launched a College and Career Development Workshop Series: What Parents Need to Know.  These workshops are geared for parents of 9th-12th grade students.
