Floresta’s after-school tutorial clubs are off to a great start, thanks to the organized and creative leadership of media teacher Geraldine Wills and math coach Vicki Pease. Twenty eight parents from Title I Schools have finished a Basic Computer class hosted by Ft. Pierce Magnet School of the Arts and Title I. Parents attended classes twice a week for four weeks to learn basic computer skills and learn to use Microsoft Word. The goal of the program is to help parents to have the skills to help their child with their school work and to enhance the parent’s computer skills. Kindergarten students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition celebrated the wedding of letters Q and U. The students learned that Q and U are always together so they had a mock wedding to re-enforce this fact. Students all had a part in the celebration as a member of the wedding party or as helpers with the reception after the ceremony. This was a fun learning experience and one they will always remember. Pictured are Trotter Chaisson, left, as the groom and Madison Parrish as the bride. 

Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently celebrated with its annual Volunteer Appreciation Event. Volunteers and Business Partners were treated to breakfast and Volunteers of the Year were recognized. Students and staff at Dan McCarty School enjoyed participating in Florida’s “Take the Lead and Read!” Literacy Week recently. Activities were held to encourage and celebrate reading. Students decorated classroom doors focusing on the theme. Overall winners included K’Asha Wright (Elementary), Gina Clark (6th Grade) and Patty Mallon (7th/8th). Students contributed 115,256 minutes of reading to Florida’s Million Minutes of Reading goal for one day. A favorite event for all was Guest Reader Day. Windmill Point Elementary students in Sherry Spires’ physical education classes are having fun while engaging in exciting, individual and dual manipulative skills development. The development of these skills prepares students for an introduction to team sports activities.

St. Lucie West Centennial High School NJROTC competition team recently participated at Flanagan High School’s field meet in Pembroke Pines, Florida. This event included 16 of Florida’s finest NJROTC units. Displaying outstanding motivation and skill, the cadets brought home 10 trophies. The cadets took fifth place 200 yard relay, third place team curl ups, fourth place color guard, fifth place unarmed basic, first place armed basic, second place armed exhibition, second place unarmed exhibition, first place personnel inspection, second place overall drill, and third place overall, qualifying for the state championship for the third time this season.

Twelve teams from six Title One Schools competed against each other in a science bowl competition at Westwood High School’s Marine Oceanographic Academy and FAU-Harbor Branch Oceanographic Center on Saturday, February 16th. The competition was a Jeopardy-style competition were two teams competed against each other in each match. Questions in the subjects of physical science, life science, earth and space science and mathematics were asked. As part of the GOMATH program at Allapattah Flats K8, fourth graders have been learning how to calculate the area of two-dimensional shapes. They started out estimating the area of given shapes, then used various strategies like counting, multiplying, and using mathematical formulas to find the area of complex shapes. Students especially loved solving problems that relate to real world situations. To engage the students, they were given an activity that involved drawing their own uniquely, designed robot on grid paper and finding the area. It was a chance for the fourth graders to show both their creativity and understanding of math skills. … Read More

Murals and models of the ocean floor were created by the students in the challenge program at Frances K. Sweet Elementary. Students worked cooperatively on a class mural diagramming features of the ocean floor and the animals that live there. Varsity cheerleaders from Lincoln Park Academy hosted cheer camp at Frances K. Sweet Elementary recently. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade had the opportunity to learn cheers, chants, and enjoy a dance. The students then performed for a packed crowd at an LPA’s boys’ basketball game.

The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion School presented the colors during the National Anthem to open the Jaguar Baseball Team’s first game of the season. Assistant principal April Rogers threw out the first pitch opening the game for the season. The Color Guard was led by Cadet Major Devynn Rhodes, who was accompanied by Cadet Second Lieutenant Tyler Lynn, Cadet Second Lieutenant Ashlee Seipel, and Cadet Staff Sergeant Allison Miakisz. The Samuel S. Gaines Academy Soccer Team went 3-2 at the District Winter Tournament. Lead by captains Manuel Esquivel #20, and Jean Saintable #10, the team advanced to the semi-finals. The leading scorer for the day was Luis Gil #4, who had six goals, beating the team record of 5 goals set a year earlier by his cousin Jesus Gil. While Luis was the leading offensive player, the star of the day was the goalie, Jose Villalta, who made save after save. Port St. Lucie High School culinary arts students Krista Ventola, right, and Kendrick Quintao and their classmates recently celebrated and served lunch to faculty with students and teachers who had the highest attendance on campus. The culinary students prepared spicy Italian chicken, homemade macaroni and cheese, yummy green beans and several other tasty dishes. To top it off, culinary instructor Chef Peter Suneson and culinary students served mouth watering desserts such as warm apple pie, lemon bars, and pumpkin pie.
