Northport K-8 School is kicking off Young Author season this year in a big way! Each year, the Northport K-8 media center is decorated to showcase the terrific Young Author books at the school. This year, the theme is “Take Me Out To The Ballgame!” Teachers selected a table or counter space and decorated with items that incorporate the theme. Northport K-8 School Media Services program, under the direction of Lynne Gruszka, along with students, faculty, administration and staff are assisting Northport alumnus Sgt. Xiovani Guanill of the U. S. Army. Sgt. Guanill, who administers Morale, Welfare and Recreation at Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, requested  assistance for the 80 men and women in his company. The Fort Pierce Central High School Fishing Club held its monthly Bass Club Tournament at Lake Okeechobee recently with 10 student anglers entered on five boats. It was a picture postcard morning that proved to be a great day on the lake for the competitors. Eight of the 10 student anglers weighed in, and the total for the day was 20 bass weighing in at 34 lbs 12 oz! the largest catch by a 5.77 pound fish caught by Will McKee, pictured. Students in Kelita Singleton’s third grade class at Windmill Point Elementary created their own comic strip “storyboard” to help them sequence and summarize information for their Young Author’s book. Recently, 31 cadets from St. Lucie West Centennial High School Navy Junior ROTC unit toured the national Navy UDT-SEAL Museum located in Fort Pierce. Upon arrival, cadets viewed multiple Navy patrol craft, two underwater SEAL delivery vehicles, and two Apollo Spacecraft training capsules. After entering the building, the cadets were guided through a World War I exhibit by a tour guide and then toured the rest of the exhibits on their own. West Gate K-8 sponsored the first Autism Walk on the Treasure Coast, Saturday April 27th in Tradition Square. The walk was held to increase public awareness of the needs of autistic children and to raise money for autism research. It was a huge sucess, with over 450 people attending the walk. Over 40 community agencies and local businesses supported and contributed to the walk. Thanks to all the walkers and sponsers, $31,000 dollars was raised for Autism Speaks.

The Port St. Lucie High School JROTC Air Rifle team wong first place at the American Legion Post 318 Invitational Air Rifle Match. Six four-person teams from three schools, including Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce Central, and Fort Pierce Westwood high schools competed for medals in each of the three positions: prone, standing, and kneeling. Port St. Lucie High’s Michael Hutchison scored the highest in the competition. Students and parents from Northport K-8 School participated in the Family Reading Festival held recently at Mets stadium, sponsored by the St. Lucie County Reading Council. The event was a wonderful and authentic testament to the entire school community, and the sharing of literary ideas, and reading and writing possibilities. Some of the events available for families were “Read To A VIP,” Reader’s Theater stage, many authors to visit, Mother Goose Storytime, Scholastic Book Fair, Gently Used book exchange and a Manga drawing contest. Pictured is Northport student Canon LeJeune, who entered a piece of his artwork in the contest.

Officers with the St. Lucie County Fire Department displayed and explained the use of the department’s Air Rescue helicopter to students in Mary Higgins’ First Responder class in the Medical Academy at St. Lucie West Centennial High School during a recent visit to the fire department’s headquarters. In addition to the presentation, students also experienced a one hour practical component with the aircraft. Fairlawn Elementary School’s PTO donated 60 shirts to students in Shirley Helton’s fifth grade class to send to troops stationed in Afghanistan. The students have been sending “goodie boxes” to the troops all year long as part of their “Treats for Troops” project. Northport K-8 School administration, faculty, staff, parents and students participated in a very meaningful way at this year’s Relay For Life 2013! Students from Lorri Rudzinski’s second grade class Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition shared their POINT OF VIEW with Superintendent Michael Lannon during a recent visit to the school. Students responded to the school district’s request for public input about what characteristics they thought the new superintendent should possess, as Mr. Lannon retires at the end of June. Third grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 School are excited about physical attributes! During a review activity students had to reach their hand into a box and describe the object inside using only adjectives. Items included a hair barrette, kaleidoscope and doll shoe. It was determined that all three objects could be identified with 80% accuracy. Three teams from Lincoln Park Academy and one team from Port St. Lucie High School have advanced to the 2013 Odyssey of the Mind World Competition in Lansing, Michigan, next month. The three Lincoln Park teams earned first place in state competition, a first for any school or individual coach. Treasure Coast High School (TCHS) Air Force ROTC students prepare to embark on another Street Cleaning Mission to keep St. Lucie Beautiful. Beginning in 2008, each month approximately 12 students pick up trash from Port St. Lucie Blvd to Tulip along Darwin, for one mile through the “Adopt-A-Road” program. Under the leadership of Lt Col. Cavallaro and SMSgt. Simmons, these students’ service usually equate to over 200 hours of voluntarism annually. The TCHS Community is very proud of its commitment to service as well as the mission to create well rounded citizens who provide leadership and service to their community.
