On the morning of October 11, some 147 students and their families from Manatee Academy K8 School participated in the third annual International Walk to School Day sponsored and promoted regionally by the South Florida Commuter Services by walking from nearby McChesney park to the school. School staff promoted the activity through morning announcements, PE classes, posters put up at the school, flyers provided were sent home and a message went home to all parents. Participating students were given backpacks, reflectors and bags from the agency. The event is to promote health, wellness and physical activity with children and families … Read More
Recently, sixth graders from Michell Powers’ science class at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition shared their expertise to their second grade “science buddies” from Melissa Bonet’s class. Together, students explored density in a hands-on inquiry activity. Both groups of students enjoyed the experience. Pictured, from left, are second grader Bradley Holtzclaw, with sixth graders Pasquale Giallongo and Giordano Fleuriot.
Students and staff at Dan McCarty School recently showed their support for Breast Cancer Awareness. Many chose to participate and wore something pink, and donations were also collected in designated containers.
Kindergartners in Linda Auciello’s class at Mariposa Elementary used their new knowledge of shapes to create some crazy shape monsters. They were given a brief discussion and example, but then they were required to cut the paper into the shapes by themselves and put the shapes together to form some sort of crazy monster! The students really came up with some fun ideas and every one of them was different because they had to use their own creativity and design! After they finished, students counted how many shapes they used all together to make their monster and how many different shapes … Read More
During literacy centers, Kira Kim and Adrian Perez from Michelle O’Keefe’s kindergarten class at F.K. Sweet Elementary School had a great time cooperating in the puppet center. They worked hard developing a story with their puppets while friends watched and enjoyed the show. Pictured are Kira Kim, left, and Adrian Perez.
Students and staff at Dan McCarty School recently celebrated the school’s first Citizens of the Month at a special breakfast. Each nonored student received a certificate and a goody bag. Citizens of the Month are selected at Dan McCarty for upholding the Eagle Expectations to act responsibly, to give respect, to be ready to learn, so everyone is safe. Families at Parkway Elementary School recently held a fund-raising event for equipment for physical education equipment. During the event, student Barrington Francis won a bicycle! Pictured is Ronald McDonald presenting the bicycle to Barrington.
Parkway Elementary School staff and students recently participated in STOMP Out Bullying! Blue Shirt Day, a worldwide event to stand together against bullying. Pictured is teacher Katya Sussman with students Mariah Herrara, left, and Alex Deal wearing their blue shirts.
Eighth grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition have been working recently on deepening their knowledge of matter and its behavior by interactively looking at the properties and changes of atoms in different types of matter. Students focused their efforts on becoming experts in matter, mass, weight, volume and density. Students worked to calculate and identify the mass, volume and density of all different types of matter during their three days of laboratory investigation. First, students looked at different regular and irregular shaped (dominoes/bell-etc) household objects, and determined the objects mass and volume. Pictured are Criston Wilson, left, and Alberto … Read More
The recent county-wide Bowl for Kids Sake event was great fun for an important cause, as funds raised are used to help support such worthwhile programs as the AmeriCorps volunteer reading program. A big Gaines Academy K8 thank you to, from left pictured, Lisa Bollinger, Traci Wilke, Christen McCray, Mike Clarke and Duane Turner for their support.
Seventh grade students in Dielma Eusebio’s class at Southport Middle School are reading the novel “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, which is set during the 1960s. Students connect with the characters and the era by dressing up as “greasers,” kids who encountered many challenges in their everyday life due to economic and social pressure. Students learn how appearance played a major role in the lives of these students. Pictured, from left, are Anahi Ortega, Sharron Dudash, Brandon Anderson, Johaan Feliciano-Alvarez, Logan Binkley and Blanca Compton.
Students in Christen McCray’s class at Gaines Academy K8 wrapped up a Nature of Science unit in which they investigated airplanes. Students flew airplanes made from various types of paper to see which would fly the farthest. Students applied the scientific method as they developed a hypothesis, collected, recorded, graphed, analyzed data, drew a conclusion and shared the results. Pictured is Johnnie Velasquez.
The WSPM Channel 2 Morning News crew at Southport Middle School brings fun and breaking news to students and staff every school day morning at 9:45. First graders at Allapattah Flats K-8 are investigating about fire safety with the help of retired Indian River County Fire Department Battalion Chief John Freeman. Mr. Freeman read an informational text about firefighters and their responsibilities. He also brought his bunker gear including a helmet, boots, pants, coat, and gloves to show the first graders how firefighters stay safe. Students vigorously asked him questions about his gear, job, and his bravery.
The Jaguar Raider Team competed in their first Raider competition this year at Fort Pierce Westwood High School.
Second graders in Kelsey Schumacher’s class explored apples using the scientific method. As scientists, they posed several questions and generated a hypothesis. After gathering the necessary materials, they went to work in the classroom and the science lab to find out if their work supported their hypothesis. After the investigations were over, the students wrote conclusions and shared their findings with each other. Students in Janet Brewi’s middle school science classes then interviewed the younger scientists about their work.
Students in Joe Kline’s eighth grade science classes at Allapattah Flats K-8 have been recently studying atoms. The students completed a hands-on science lab where they created atoms from clay. Students had to create the protons, neutrons, and electrons. In addition, they are building their own periodic table using their own elements — all while calculating the important parts of the atom. Pictured, from left, are Jordan Williams and Matthew Madera.
As part of their science curriculum, students in Bethany DiTullio’s fourth grade class at Allapattah Flats K8 recently studied physical and chemical changes of matter. As a culminating activity, the students performed four different experiments using baking soda and vinegar, salt and water, glow sticks, and crumbling paper. Students then decided whether a physical or chemical change occurred in each experiment based on their observations and knowledge. Students filled out their lab sheets with hypotheses, observations, and data as they went. Pictured, from left, are Chloe Perlmutter, Kyleigh Reese, and Christopher Daley.
St. Lucie West K-8 eighth grade students have found a unique way to learn about the Pythagorean theorem, by putting their problems down on the sidewalks around school! Not only did the students in Carol Matulonis’ class learn about the mathematical theorem, but students viewing their artwork were able to see how it works. Pictured, from left, are Marie Saint-Fleury, Eli Renteria, Alexis Henke, Kayla Manso, Guerna Lormejuste, Ashley Masabanda, and Brianna O’Day.
