Cinco de Mayo is not going unnoticed here at Samuel Gaines Academy. Students in Mr. Plowden’s 8th grade History spent some time researching different Hispanic leaders who has made significant contributions to their culture by creating Thinking Maps, taking Cornell notes, and using technology resources.  This is a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage and is warmly embraced at Gaines Academy.

First grade students in Michelle Smith’s First Grade Class at Mariposa Elementary each have their individual goal folders. Inside their goal folders are sight words, math concepts (numbers, 3D shapes, etc.) and chunks (digraphs/blends/word families). The students pair up each week to practice their goals and congratulate one another when they reach their goals. Northport K-8 students, teachers and parents united recently to complete the Young Author’s program. The Author’s program is a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate that they have learned the writing process effectively. The entire school completes the book as a community program using common language in a commitment to engaged learning. Students learn to flesh out their characters and setting with concrete vocabulary words and phrases. Singer, dancers, karate, gymnastics, and football moves were only a few of the dozens of talented teachers and students who took the Lawnwood Elementary stage. The annual Talent Show Night was presented to over 300 friends and parents who excitedly packed the auditorium. Third grade students from Mrs. Eleanor Baker’s, Mrs. Lisa McGuire’s and Mrs. Barbara Bennett’s classes enjoyed a field trip to IRSC’s Hallstrom Planetarium. At the planetarium students enjoyed the show narrated by Mr. Jon Bell.  The new projector is amazing and made the whole experience even more exciting!  The students have a better understanding of the phases of the moon and about why we have four seasons, the planets and the conditions on each planet, and how stars and black holes are formed. The visit proved to be an interesting experience for the students.

Forest Grove was on hand April 30, 2014, to assist with the ribbon cutting at the new Cumberland Farms on Midway Road and 25th Street.  Cumberland Farms has partnered with Forest Grove Middle School as a business partner.  During the month of May, Cumberland Farms will donate 10 cents for every fountain beverage or coffee purchased from that location.  Thank you Cumberland Farms for supporting education.

Mariposa Elementary has been extremely fortunate to have Ms. Marjorie Ovsiovitch as our Americorps volunteer this year. Ms. Ovsiovitch has helped numerous children close their learning gaps while enjoying time with her. She is kind, dedicated, and loyal to our Monarchs. “The Right to Vote” was this year’s theme for The Friends of the Rupert J. Law Library’s Annual Law Day Celebration student art and essay contest. Southport’s Graciela Pardo, 3rd place Middle School winner, is pictured with Southport’s art teacher Katherine Avra.  Grace’s work featured an abstract American Flag with this year’s theme showcased in the foreground.

Northport K-8 School kindergarten students in Melody Nieves hosted Port St. Lucie mayor, Joanne Faiella recently. Mayor Faiella graciously accepted the invitation by Big Brothers, Big Sisters AmeriCorps tutor, Alex Neelan who tutors several of the kindergarten students. Mrs. Nieves prepared the students by having them make welcome signs in the front office, on the classroom door and in the classroom. Students in Ms. Seaton’s 7th grade science class spent some time using different tools which simulate the various possible beaks that birds on the Galapagus Islands have. Students made hypotheses then tested the efficiency of each beak, and then went on to do increased competition as resources dwindled. They were able to make the connection between their hands on experience and how adaptations and competition affects survival of the fittest. Every year, local students fill out an application, write two essays and are interviewed to compete for a spot to go to Tallahassee for a chance to experience and participate in our states government. Lawnwood Elementary Media Specialist, Mrs. Schaeperkoetter, represented her faculty team in April’s PBS challenge. The teachers joined a team of kindergarteners in  a game of dodge ball during the annual and popular award event.  The students worked for several weeks collecting “Lawnwood loot ” behavior rewards to participate in the friendly challenge, which included PE coaches, resource, and kindergarten teachers.
