On Saturday November 5th, Caleb Pottorff won the 2A Cross Country State Meet.  Caleb ran the fastest 5K of the 728 male and female runners who participated.  Congratulations to Caleb! Your Lincoln Park Academy family is very proud of you.

Lincoln Park Academy’s Middle School Student Council is grateful to be assisting the effort to eliminate hunger within the community.  With the tremendous outpouring of effort from students and staff, LPA was able to donate    2 1/2 wagons of non-perishable food items to the Mustard Seed Ministry.        

During the November 22nd Organizational Meeting of the School Board, School Board Attorney Daniel B. Harrell administered the Oath of Office to School Board Member Carol A. Hilson (residing in District No. 2) and School Board Member Kathryn Hensley (residing in District No. 4). Both were re-elected to four year terms and will continue to proudly serve the students, staff, and community of St. Lucie County.

The School Board of St. Lucie County held an Organizational Meeting on November 22, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. in the School Board Room. During this meeting, Mr. Troy Ingersoll was elected Chairman and Dr. Donna Mills was elected Vice Chairman.

It was the pleasure of the Northport administration, teachers, and staff to host our monthly Speakers Bureau in partnership with Dr. Donna Mills, SLPS School Board Member recently. Each month, Northport along with several other schools, hosts guest speakers who encourage and motivate students to pull themselves up by the boot straps, make good choices, use positive role models and learn to find their passion and purpose in life. All White City Elementary families were invited to participate in student-led conference night.  Students shared their academic goals, assignments, and discussed their overall progress with their families. White City Wildcats are held accountable for their own learning.

In the course of just one day, we can find many things to be thankful for…if we only take the time. The students and staff in Mrs. Hill’s ASD room at Samuel Gaines Academy have adopted and set aside the month of November to display an attitude of gratitude. To show their thankfulness, the students (under the artistic direction of Ms. Pattie Morse) created a wall of gratitude which is on display outside their classroom. The wall is adorned with “Give Thanks” wreaths and a hand-made patchwork quilt depicting what the students are thankful for.

In a recent Medal of Heroism Ceremony hosted by Westwood High School Panther Battalion, Cadet First Sergeant Unique Rosario received the prestigious Medal of Heroism award. Unique leaped into a river after Hurricane Hermine to save a young boy who had fallen out of his family’s raft. She risked her life thinking only of that young boy and his safety. Unique Rosario is the epitome of heroism, and the Panther Battalion was proud to honor her with this award.

The Morningside Elementary Title I Superhero Literacy Night was a huge success! Students and families were encouraged to wear superhero costumes or shirts when they attended the fun-filled event. Families rotated through superhero stations that featured reading skills while integrating science, math, and writing.  The attendees also were treated to delicious pizza from Little Caesars and all students received a superhero-themed prize at the end of the event! 

The Fort Pierce Westwood High School JROTC recently competed in the Academic JLAB competition. JLAB (Junior Leadership and Academic Bowl) is a program within JROTC sponsored by the College Options Foundation. Cadets have the opportunity to improve their ACT/SAT scores, increase interest in college admission, gain leadership skills, and advance hands-on learning. During the JLab competition, the team completed an academic test composed of three sections: verbal, math, and science. On October 20th in the Lincoln Park Academy gymnasium, the Lady Greyhounds captured another volleyball district title against Clewiston High School.  This is the forth consecutive district title for for LPA.  Congratulations to the players and coaches!!

On October 10th at the Fairwinds Golf Course, our Lady Greyhounds captured their second consecutive district title.  The girls went on to compete at the regional level.  Congratulations to the players and Coach Williams.

The Panther Battalion was invited to attend a Veterans Ceremony at Frances K. Sweet Elementary. The Color Guard presented the national colors. The Color Guard consisted of C/SGT Barnhill, C/SGT Scanlan, C/PFC Flores, and C/PVT Lifhrid, commanded by C/MSG Tavernia. The Battalion Commander, C/LTC Hardecia Williams, gave a speech commemorating all veterans on this special day. The purpose of the event was to give respect and attention to all veterans, both alive and deceased. The Panther Battalion’s Bravo Company also started the “push-ups for veterans.”

Chester A. Moore teachers, staff, families, friends and community leaders came together for an evening of fun. Harvest Fest 2016 was put together to bring our families together, show our students a great time, and was 100% free to all.      

Parents, students, and families who attended Southport’s annual Family Literacy Night enjoyed a great night of music, games, food, and fun. Literacy teachers planned activities like Reading Rocks, Beat the Clock, and Musical Literacy while others served pizza and popcorn — all to provide families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encourage kids to read. School Resource Deputy Greene from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department was there to provide bicycle safety information and fit students with brand new helmets. On October 29th, Fort Pierce Westwood hosted its Annual Raider Meet. This was the second competition of the year for Westwood’s Raider Team. Eight teams competed, each having sub-teams for a total of  fifteen teams. These teams represented area high schools ranging from Okeechobee to Santaluces. There were three categories, each one stacked with heavy competition. Westwood itself was in the mixed category, also the largest. The Westwood Raider team pushed themselves to compete with other schools. Westwood was able to secure two second place spots and showed great improvement over recent years. The Panther Battalion Color Guard was invited to present the colors at the “Lights on After School Event.” The purpose of the event was to inform parents and students about various after school activities in the area. C/SGT Barnhill, C/SGT Scanlan, C/PFC Flores, C/PVT Warner, and C/PVT Clayton all attended the event. Various other organizations were at the event, such as Boy Scouts of America, U.S. National Guard, and Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County. The goal of the program is to get students engaged in after school activities.

To help celebrate Fire Safety Month, Smokey Bear came to visit Oak Hammock Kindergartners. Students had the chance to see all of the equipment used to help put out forest fires. Smokey talked to the students about wildfire prevention and ways to be safe around and with fire. After the presentation, students had the chance to read their Scholastic reader on Fire Safety.

At Mariposa Elementary’s book fair, many students benefited from a special donation from two brothers, Antonio Delatorre and Alejandro Delatorre. The brothers each donated $10 along with a letter they individually wrote indicating that they would like the money to benefit students who cannot afford a book. It was a very special donation indeed and many students went home with books because of their generous donation! Also, the book fair hosted a “Books and Bubbly” event for teachers and staff. Northport welcomed twelve local veterans into the school media center recently to honor Veterans Day and to teach students about words with very important meanings like service, sacrifice, integrity, grit, and commitment. The group of veterans are an integral part of the fabric of Northport and they bring their very important message to the children of the school regularly. Students in Jennifer Lusardi’s and Kristin Schrader’s second grade classes, Michelle Kemp’s third grade class, and middle grades students from the seventh and eighth grade Stingray and Dolphins team were engaged and asked important questions.
