Area Three Drill Meet 2017 By: Sarai Narvaez The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion Drill Team hosted the 23rd Annual Area Three Drill Meet. The Best School Overall was determined by the combined scores of the male and female drill teams.  The Jaguar Battalion Drill Team competed against 18 other schools and earned first place overall. The Jaguar Battalion Drill Team was State qualified to compete in the annual State Drill Meet Competition. Shark Chefs in Final 4

The SLWK-8 Shark Chefs have been working hard all year preparing dishes for the Gridiron Challenge and they have qualified for the 2017 FINAL FOUR! The competition takes place April 22 in Davie FL, at the NFL Training Facility. The Chefs have perfected their Chicken Alfredo with Broccoli recipe and are ready for the competition! They are excited to represent SLWK-8 and St. Lucie Public Schools!

FKS Water Conservation Poster Contest Winner

Christopher Gomez at Frances K. Sweet was surprised to find out he won the 2017 Drop Savers Water Conservation Poster Contest for fifth grade. The City of Port St. Lucie Utility Systems, in conjunction with Florida Section American Water Works Association (FSAWWA), held the contest for all St. Lucie County students in order for them to better understand the importance of water conservation. Efficacy Program at Bayshore

Third grade students from Bayshore Elementary School were recently recognized for completing the Efficacy for Students Program.  Throughout the program students learned strategies to empower their learning, such as using data to create meaningful feedback and strategies for success.  They also developed a greater sense of self-confidence by learning to choose their strong side to build character.  Pictured (from left to right) are Katherine Clark, Reese Adams, RJ McWilliams, Mrs. Reid (Bayshore Principal), and Mariah Lewis.

Students’ ceramic art pieces from Art Instructor Katherine Avra’s classes at Fort Pierce Central High School are on their way to the New York City National Art Education Conference this month.  These selections join other entries from across the United States as showcase pieces by Skutt Ceramics. LPA Wins at Fair

Lincoln Park Academy’s 3-dimmensional art classes worked collaboratively to create a red, white, and blue Floridian inspired booth. The students each formed an individual red, white, or blue flower to contribute to a large hanging garden mural. The main focal point of the booth was a large eagle relief that read, “Art can change people and people change the world.” Ms. Duran’s advanced classes produced large “Big Head” sculptures inspired by influential Floridians and characters such as Tim Tebow, Walt Disney, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Duck. Spring Break Camp

Students from C. A. Moore and Lakewood Park Elementary gathered for a Spring Break Tutorial Camp. Working alongside staff, they were able to spend time on reading and math while also enjoying extracurricular activities. During the camp, students were thrilled with the Oxbow Center’s Reptile Show, and many special community guests stopped by to spend time with students including officers from the Fort Pierce Police Department, Mr.Dan Frank, and Dr. Kevin Perry.          

LPA Key Club Shows Support

On Saturday, March 18, the LPA Key Club provided assistance to the Main Street Fort Pierce program by sponsoring and promoting the Coloring Wall during the Taste of the Sea and Sandy Shoes Seafood Festival in downtown Fort Pierce. Designed as a means to recruit festival participants in an entertaining and creative activity, the Coloring Wall was very successful. Throughout the day, several Key Club members were able to entice young and old alike to express themselves with crayons, paints, chalk and markers. The Lincoln Park Academy Adobe CAPE Academy team made it into the final round of judging for another global digital video competition! Kid Witness News (KWN) is a global video education program supported by Panasonic, with the aim of boosting creativity and communication skills and fostering teamwork through video production by children at the elementary and secondary school levels. There are currently 553 schools in 19 countries participating in the program worldwide, of which 53 of those schools are enrolled in the U.S. Although KWN represents students from schools across the country and around the world, the messages in their … Read More

LPA Sends Two Teams to Odyssey of the Mind State Finals

Congratulations to the LPA Odyssey of the Mind teams! On February 26, two teams competed in the Regional Tournament at Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach and both teams are headed to the Florida State Tournament on the campus of the University of Central Florida on April 8. Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from K to 12th grades. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. Leprechaun Traps

Ms. Mellion’s class created Leprechaun Traps for STEAM challenge. They used their critical thinking skills to figure out the best way to catch a leprechaun. The class voted for their top three favorites and they received a prize. All students received Gator Bucks (PBIS) for participation. Can’t wait to see how many leprechauns are caught over break!  

Grace Packs and Pan Florida Challenge

Grace Packs is an organization serving St. Lucie County that provides weekly weekend food for students who lack an ample food supply. Currently, Grace Packs provides service to 20 schools in St. Lucie County, thus relieving the burden many children endure by being hungry. This past weekend, Grace Packs and St. Lucie Public Schools volunteers supported the Pan Florida Challenge — a two-day, 180 mile bike ride to end kids’ hunger — one meal at a time.   The ride started in Naples on March 11th and ended in Fort Pierce on March 12. Mariposa’s Odyssey

Mariposa Elementary’s Award Winning Odyssey of the Mind Team A team of seven creative minds from Mariposa Elementary came together to save creativity through problem solving. Mariposa’s Odyssey of the Mind team went to a regional competition in Riviera Beach, where they won 2nd place! The team members that participated were 5th graders Janellie Alvarez, Sydnee Rubenstein, James Philips, and Samantha Gardner; 4th graders Justin Horton and Mason Mumford; 3rd grader Taylor Wildes. Northport Second Graders Become Researchers and Scientists!

Northport students became researchers and scientists in their classrooms. Hobe Sound Nature Preserve brought live owls to enhance the science lessons learned in school. Students learned about heredity and the difference between owls and red tailed hawks. They learned what owls eat as well as their natural habitats, and they also learned that owls can’t digest foods so they form pellets similar to hairballs. The pellets are filled with bones from their prey. Students were able to dissect sterilized pellets and match bone pieces to figures on a chart. A big thumbs up to this terrific hands-on lesson. Unified Track and Field Meet

With the support of Special Olympics Coordinators from local high schools, St. Lucie Public Schools hosted its first Unified Track and Field Meet on Wednesday, March 8th at Lawnwood Stadium in Fort Pierce. The Meet started out as a practice run, but it soon turned into a full-fledged event that engaged all participants in a spirited day.  The excitement of the track and field events was infectious and everyone left with smiles on their faces.
