Wampler Applauded For Leadership

  St. Lucie West Centennial High School Junior Kaylee Wampler was applauded for her student leadership efforts at May’s School Board Meeting.  She has already started making her mark and lending her voice to causes for which she feels passion. Most recently, she was an eloquent speaker at the League of Women Voters.  In addition, she organized the March for Our Lives in Port St. Lucie. Kaylee is to be admired for her advocacy, self-empowerment, and encouragement to engage others in positive community action.

MSE – Onward to World Finals

Morningside Elementary’s (MSE) Odyssey of the Mind Team is advancing to the World Finals competition slated for May 23 – May 26 in Ames, Iowa. Morningside’s team will convene with approximately 850 other teams for what is deemed to be the largest creative problem-solving competition. Julie Moore is an instructor at MSE and coach for the MSE Odyssey of the Mind Team. She explained that the team, operating on their own were challenged to create a team-operated vehicle. Southport Students Connecting with the Community

The sixth-grade students at Southport Middle School extended their thanks to residents in our Port St. Lucie community with hand-crafted cards, bookmarks and blankets as part of a school-wide service project. The celebration began outside the media center where students welcomed the residents of Harbor Place Assisted Living, residents of Ballentrae and members of Holy Family Church with an “Appreciation Tunnel.”  Once they arrived to their destination, the students enjoyed conversation with their guests and gave their personalized gifts of kindness to them.  Everyone enjoyed the entertainment the students provided through skits and a musical ensemble. Cobras Organize And Make Impact

Our amazing Cobras organized events over the last month to discuss and bring attention to the issue of school shootings. These events included performances by our Louder Than a Bomb Team, Choir, Drama, and culminated with a student panel discussion. On Friday, May 4th, the audience included our Superintendent of Schools, police officers, local judge, commissioners, representatives, and many other community leaders — all listening to our students! We are so proud of our Cobras!

FGMS Visits Medieval Times

Forest Grove Middle School students recently traveled to Medieval Times in Kissimmee, FL for a day of information, entertainment and lunch. Batter Up! St. Lucie County Education Foundation Celebrity Softball Game Benefits Scholarship Fund

Education Foundation, St. Lucie County will be hosting a celebrity softball game to raise money for public school teachers and students. The game will feature an all-star lineup of St. Lucie County firefighters vs. St. Lucie County public school educators. The first annual All-Star Softball game will be at First Data Field on May 12. Activities will begin at 3 p.m. with a variety of sponsors and vendors who support education. PSLHS Army JROTC Change of Command Ceremony

On April 26th at 6PM, the Port Saint Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion hosted their annual Change of Command ceremony. Relieving the current Battalion Commander of his duty c/LTC Travis Cetin welcomes c/LTC Veronika Patti to command and led the Battalion on a successful path. Pictured below is Mr. Jerry Earley as the Commander performing the tradition of “Passing of the Colors.”  The Change of Command is a simple, traditional event that is rich with symbolism and heritage.  The distinguished guest for the ceremony was Assistant Chief Richard Del Toro, of the Port St. Lucie Police Department.

SLWK-8 4th Graders Are Hatching Eggs With 4H

Mrs. Ciufo’s and Ms. Rovendro’s 4th Grade classes are participating in an embryology program with the 4H Club and we are incubating eggs in our classrooms. It will take 21 days for the eggs to hatch. “Candling” the chicken eggs is the way that you visually inspect the development and integrity of each egg using a bright beam of light. In the past, when there was no electricity, farmers used a candle to check the egg. Now we use flashlights!

Southport Middle School Girls on the Run 5K

Southport’s Heart & Sole team had a fabulous time as they completed their 2018 Girls on the Run 5K this past weekend. After completing a 10-week course, you could see the sense of accomplishment as the girls made it through to the finish line alongside their running buddy. Heart & Sole is a transformational physical activity based program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. “The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. Geometry is Life!

Ms. Cirocco’s Geometry Class is creating roller coasters! The students are finally in the building stages of the framework and some are even starting to put the tracks on! . The purpose of the project is to bring science and math from the classroom into the real world. Class discussions have been about how the engineers and builders have to create a design and then build.

Northport Medical Detectives Excel

Seventh and eighth grade students in Northstars STEM class are working on finishing their PLTW Medical Detectives unit ending in a “murder mystery.” Students have calculated time of death, dusted for prints, analyzed hair samples, and compared shoe-print patterns among other things to determine which suspects they would question. Today students interrogated their suspects. Next, students will act as lawyers, judge and jury to determine the guilt of one of the fictitious suspects. Army Ranger Dedicated Jump #53 to Northport Children!

Second Lieutenant, Army Ranger, Xiovani Guanill dedicated his 53rd parachute jump to NPK* students. Xiovani attended school at Northport and graduated from our Landsharks team. He was just a regular funny kid with a sarcastic and witty sense of humor. Xiovani Guanill wanted in some way to make his parents proud because he grew up with his mom in a wheelchair. He floated around a little then joined the United States Army. He served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He even visited Northport children one time and his helmet still had Iraqi sand in it. Harvesting Radishes at Village Green Environmental School

Child Nutrition Services was invited to Village Green Environmental Studies School by the Kindergarten class to assist in the harvesting and cleaning of radishes grown by the students in the school garden. After the harvest, the students participated in a kitchen tour given by Ms. Deanna Kinder, cafeteria manager, including a stop by the freezer! Ms. Dawn Davila showed students how to wash and trim the radishes and explained how the roots bring nutrients to the plant to help it grow into the food we eat.
