More than 150 Health Science 10th and 11th grade students at St. Lucie West Centennial High School learned Hands-Only CPR. These students were taught by Mary Higgins, Elizabeth Durkee, and their Certified Nursing Assistant students. Students learned how to recognize the need for CPR, how to call 911, and how to push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the classic disco song “Stayin’ Alive.” The American Heart Association’s Hands-Only CPR method at this beat can more than double a person’s chances of survival. The St. Lucie West Centennial Navy JROTC unit continues its mentoring program with the Boys and Girls Club of St. Lucie West K-8 by educating their students regarding respect when performing Color Guard duties. The students were educated in proper rifleman and flagman procedures as well as shown proper Color Guard drill commands and procedures. The St. Lucie West Centennial Navy JROTC mentor the St. Lucie West K-8 Boys and Girls Club students every Tuesday each week.

The Kids Heart Challenge (formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart) event was held last Friday, February 15th at Palm Pointe K-8. Coach Piscopo and Coach Santoro were amazing volunteers and do so much to support the American Heart Association mission. This year, the students raised $4,431 to help further the mission of the AHA. Great work!
Fort Pierce Westwood High School agriscience students and their instructor Jenna Blankenbaker hosted a virtual field trip for middle schools. Using the virtual meeting platform Skype, classrooms from Northport K-8, Manatee K-8, and Allapattah Flats K-8 connected with the Westwood FFA Officers to see animals, technology, tools, and highlights of the program.

On Saturday February 16, 2019, Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion’s Marksmanship Team attended a competition held at Jupiter High School. The Jaguar Battalion’s “sharpshooters” competed against nine other Army JROTC programs in the area. Cadet Captain Simmons shot an outstanding 207 out of 300 points, scoring the highest out of our nine cadets. Our Marksmanship Team includes: Cadet Sergeant First Class Cook, Cadet Captain Simmons, Cadet Corporal Moad, Cadet Corporal Lewiston, Cadet Private Arrabe, Cadet Private O’Hare, Cadet Private Svoboda, and Cadet Private Funez. On January 24, the school district hosted 18 historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) and Hispanic serving institutions (HSI) at the 3rd Annual HBCU/HSI College Fair. Planning to build a better future! 8th grade Northstars students visited the Robotics and Photonics labs at IRSC on February 15, 2019 for some hands-on learning. Students explored the roles that lasers and robotics play in our lives as well as some possible career choices in those fields.
