3rd Annual HBCU/HSI College Fair

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) continues to bring opportunities to students for college and career success. On January 24, the school district hosted 18 historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) and Hispanic serving institutions (HSI) at the 3rd Annual HBCU/HSI College Fair. LUCIE COUNTY, FL — In a live broadcast from Lincoln Park Academy on Saturday, February 9, 2019, St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) and the Education Foundation of St. Lucie County announced this year’s line-up of educational superstars. Makeda-Ione Brome took top honors as St. Lucie County’s Teacher of the Year. Many thanks to SLPS School Board Member, Dr. Donna Mills and her husband, Pastor Kenneth Mills. The Mills hold a very special place in the heart and soul of all that makes up Northport K-8. Northport K-8 Represents at Project Citizen

Excellence in education has been given a big thumbs up at Northport K-8 School. Two seventh grade teams led the school in a spectacular showing at the Project Citizen Showcase. Many thanks to Thomas McDonald and the teachers who brought out the very best in our student teams! Job well done!

The Future Looks Bright Northport K-8

Planning to build a better future! 8th grade Northstars students visited the Robotics and Photonics labs at IRSC on February 15, 2019 for some hands-on learning. Students explored the roles that lasers and robotics play in our lives as well as some possible career choices in those fields.

Palm Pointe Rockets Love Reading!

Palm Pointe 1st Graders held a “Read to Your Sweetheart” event on February 13th.  Parents and families were invited to  celebrate all of the reading accomplishments that their first graders have made.  Boys and girls shared their love of reading with those that mean the most to them.

CTE Students Tour Keiser University

St. Lucie Public Schools Criminal Justice students from Fort Pierce Westwood High School, Fort Pierce Central High School, St. Lucie West Centennial High School, and Treasure Coast High School were invited to Keiser University.  Students were afforded the opportunity to partake in guided tours, hands-on demonstrations, and an informational session on college scholarships and planning.  Thank you Keiser University for providing this experience to our students!

CTE Student Visit Federal Courtroom

Students from Fort Pierce Westwood High School, Performance Based Academy, and Treasure Coast High School attended a Civil Discourse and Teen Decision Making session at the Federal Courthouse.  U.S. Magistrate Judge Maynard and U.S. District Court Judge Rosenberg invited the students to this unique opportunity to have a Federal Courtroom tour and simulation of a civil case.  The students enjoyed this special experience!

Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie (CAST) Teacher Honored

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL – Andrew Gekoskie, Instrumental Music Teacher at Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie (CAST) was recently selected as a Conn-Selmer VIP by the Conn-Selmer Education Division as one of the leading music educators in the country.  The six music educators selected from throughout the country collaborated regarding methods and current music education practices.  In addition, the VIP’s were able to tour the factories of Conn-Selmer which make brass, percussion, and woodwind instruments, all still handmade to this day.  The artisans making the instruments shared their techniques and displayed their pride in making exceptional musical instruments for … Read More

Forest Grove Honors Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, Forest Grove Middle School hosted a Black History Wax Museum. Selected students researched an African-American historical figure, created a poster, and gave oral presentations. Sixth-grade history students were afforded the opportunity to participate in a scavenger hunt and win prizes based on their knowledge of the historical figures presented to them. Figures included: Louis Armstrong, Mae Jemison, Whitney Houston, Mary McLeod Bethune, and many more!

Students Save Time and Money with Dual Enrollment

Parents of high school students are often concerned about the cost of college. Dual Enrollment at Indian River State College (IRSC) provides an opportunity for high school students to begin work on their college degree for free while finishing high school, saving time and thousands of dollars in college tuition. Courses such as College Algebra and English Composition, which cost approximately $600 at a state university can be completed with no tuition charge. Courses are offered at convenient times and weighted the same as Honors, Advanced Placement, Advanced International Certificate of Education and International Baccalaureate courses. SLWCHS NAVY JROTC Mentors at West Gate K-8

The SLW Centennial High School NAVY JROTC continues to mentor the West Gate K-8 middle school students through a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club.  This week, the Centennial Black Talon Cadets demonstrated physical training stretches and exercises and had the Boys and Girls Club children participate as well. Part of the mentoring process for the Centennial Black Talon unit is not only instilling principles of leadership, but showing the students the importance of physical fitness.

White City Elementary students participated in a vocabulary parade. WCE students enjoyed this visually amusing event.  Students are using their creative skills and learning new words!

PSLHS JROTC Accreditation Inspection

The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion achieved a score of 98.25% on its JPA inspection, allowing them to maintain Honor Unit with Distinction Award, represented with a yellow star worn above the name plate on the right-hand side. The day began with a Continuous Improvement and Service Learning briefing. Directly after each briefing, the Platoon and Color Guard drill evaluation was conducted followed by Cadet and Instructor Portfolios. FK Sweet Hosts Superintendent Gent at SAC Meeting

Frances K. Sweet Magnet School was pleased to host Mr. E. Wayne Gent at our School Advisory Council Meeting on February 12, 2019.  Parents, teachers, students, staff, and community members received important information regarding the proposed referendum directly from our Superintendent.  They had the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback. After the meeting, Mr. Gent visited the music suite and performed a solo piano exhibition that was impressive to students and educators alike!  Thank you Mr. Gent for your belief in our students, teachers, and community.

Growing CTE Program Holds Bus Tours to Visit Local Businesses

The Career and Technical Education (CTE) department collaborated with the Economic Development Council, Treasure Coast Manufacturer’s Association, and Treasure Coast Builder’s Association to host the School Counselor Bus Tour.  The bus tours included CTE teachers, guidance counselors, and graduation coaches from our high schools, who toured various businesses in our county including: Ross Mixing, Dragonfly Graphics, St. Lucie Battery and Tire, Radical Cosmetics, and Premier Fabricators.  This event creates awareness of the employment opportunities available to our students and graduating seniors, as we work to close the skills gap.
