Young Floridian Scholarship Winners

For 35 years the Young Floridian Scholarship program has honored the most stellar high school seniors in St. Lucie County. Currently run through the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce Foundation, this community-supported program awards scholarships to deserving students with pomp and circumstance at an annual awards ceremony. This year’s winners were announced onstage, the evening of February 20th at Indian River State College’s McAlpin Fine Arts Center. Each winner received a $1,000 scholarship to the college or university of their choice and/or a two-year full scholarship to IRSC. Winners were awarded in 15 categories. 2nd Annual Culinary Cook-Off

Join us for the 2nd Annual Student Culinary Cook-Off, a collaboration of Child Nutrition Services and the Career and Technical Education Culinary Arts Program.  The purpose of the event is for our student chefs in the Middle School and High School Culinary Arts Program to create enticing entrees that their peers would enjoy while following the USDA guidelines for the National School Lunch Program.  The winning entrée will be placed on the menu for the 2019-2020 school year. First Vote Week

Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker requested the Board’s endorsement of the “First Vote Week” Proclamation for March 11-15, 2019, that upholds a non-partisan, classroom-based voter education, registration and citizenship program conducted in Social Studies and American Government classes for high school students. The goal of the Supervisor of Elections is to give every student the opportunity to register to vote at age 18 or pre-register at age 16 and 17.  The Supervisor of Elections and her staff will be on high school campuses to assist students and teachers with voter registration in support of the First Vote program.

Medal of Honor Day

The School Board joins Governor Ron DeSantis in extending greetings and best wishes to all observing March 25, 2019 as Medal of Honor Day in Florida. Lincoln Park Academy Principal Henry Sanabria (former U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant) and Port St. Lucie High School Principal Adrian Ocampo (former U.S. Marine Lance Corporal) read the Proclamation. All grade levels in public schools are encouraged to coordinate instruction that encourages patriotism and commemorates Medal of Honor Day.

Spring Break Reminder!

This is a friendly reminder that Monday, March 18th through Friday, March 22nd is Spring Break. Faculty and staff return on Monday, March 25th for a workday. Students return on Tuesday, March 26th. Please note that 12 month personnel work March 18 – March 22. All students and staff will resume a regular schedule on Tuesday March 26th. The Southport Middle School Cafe staff teamed up with art teacher Brenda Pecora and attendance clerk Linda Nelson in a race to make National School Breakfast Week an enjoyable time for everyone at school. SLWK-8 Odyssey of the Mind Places 1st

St. Lucie West K-8 participated in the Palm Regional Competition for Odyssey of the Mind on Saturday, March 9, 2019. There were five problem-solving categories. On Thursday March 7th, 2019, select cadets from the Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion’s Raider Team went to Southport Middle School. Seven Cadets: Cadet Corporal Mayoliv Hernandez, Cadet Captain Mathew Simmons, Cadet Sergeant First- Class Edward Cook, Cadet Corporal Alexis Wilson, Cadet Sergeant Justin Bennet, Cadet Major Joleen Kalinowski, and Cadet Corporal Emma Lewiston joined Southport’s gym class periods 5, 6, and 7.
