Northport Students Reading For Pleasure!

Third graders from Mrs. Kemp and Miss Schrader’s class visited the Media Center recently. Students selected two or three free books donated by a parent and then selected a library book. Students learned how to use the library and follow the library norms. It was a GREAT visit. 67% of all children from ages 6-17 get their pleasure reading books from the school library. Education Foundation of St. Lucie County

Thom Jones, Executive Director of the Education Foundation of St. Lucie County, provided an end-of-year update to the School Board. The St. Lucie County Education Foundation was founded in 1990 as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization whose purpose is to support the teachers and students of the St. Lucie County School District through programs not funded by tax revenue.

August STAR Awards

Martha Taylor – Job Coach SLPS Martha was nominated for her work with Student Perks, a coffee cart that is at the SLC Board of County Commissioners Building as well as at the Port St. Lucie City Hall Building. She has worked tirelessly to provide this wonderful opportunity for the students to learn job skills.  Taylor has worked closely with the schools, students, county administrators and commissioners to make this enterprise happen.  She continues to look for new opportunities for the students to gain the experience they need to be gainfully employed once they graduate from high school. Partnership with School Board Celebrated

Pete Tesch and Jill Marasa from Economic Development Council (EDC), Rich Kolleda from Workforce Readiness Taskforce (WRT), and Brian Bauer from CareerSource Research Coast thanked the School Board for supporting this summer’s Boot Camps and acknowledged the positive partnership that they have with SLPS. Ready to Work Boot Camps were established at the request of manufacturers and trades seeking employees. The WRT was started in 2015 as a result of the EDC’s 2015-2020 Strategic Plan to explore workforce readiness and education improvements that has grown to 30 plus regional stakeholders.

What a smooth opening day at Northport K-8 School. The teachers greeted their new students and parents with smiles, hugs, and high fives. Many thanks to community partners for coming to Northport to welcome parents and families. Their support is vital for a successful school year. Thanks to Vietnam Veterans, Chapter 566; 1 PSL Baptist Church; First United Methodist Church; Assistant PSLPD Police Chief, Richard Del Toro; and our partners at Step Up America for being those first welcoming faces at our school.

Northport Honored to be on the Missions List for FUMC

Northport is thankful for the love and care offered to students and teachers from the First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie. The church congregation has embraced this Title One school as a mission. Students and teachers are blessed to be the recipients of lunches and breakfasts on teacher planning days and workdays, donations of over 100 fully loaded bookbags, supplies and so much more. The Navigators are thrilled to have so many this organization’s members in place as classroom tutors and adoptive grandparents.
