Students and staff at Morningside Elementary dressed in “glow” from head to toe and participated in a variety of activities on Glow Day in order to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters through the Bowl for Kid’s Sake Fundraiser. Students raised over$700.
St. Lucie Elementary students in Joseph Richardson’s 5th grade class used Nearpod to discover how to find the volume of an object. Mr. Richardson was using Nearpod to launch the newest unit in math. The students had to draw a fish tank, label the dimensions, and then find the volume of their tanks. They were then tasked with finding the volume of different rectangular prisms using the quiz mode in Nearpod. Students had a blast and can’t wait for the next Nearpod lesson!

Ms. Anderson’s 2nd grade class at Fairlawn Elementary are studying the states of matter. They used the different components of a root beer float to represent the different states of matter and see the effect that they play on one another.
Students and adults alike are actively searching for a positive way to manage the stressors that come with a new school year. Through art, specifically a process modernly referred to as Zentangling, students can learn to be more mindful of the present moment. Zentangling, the act of doodling or tangling various lines and patterns, began in Ancient India and has been widely adopted into art practices and therapy today. After a year of dormancy, Oak Hammock’s Butterfly Garden is sprouting back to life and is available for learning experiences. Ms. Campbell, 6th Grade ELA teacher, nurtured and cultivated a learning environment for students. The garden also provides a park-like atmosphere where students and staff alike can go to de-stress or meditate, and it is frequently used during SEL for students to have discussions and complete exploratory writing. On Unity Day, Mariposa students and staff wore orange to show that they are together against bullying, and united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Kindergartner, Nia Johnson, is pointing out our United for Kindness, Acceptance, and Inclusion Sign. Mariposa students worked on Project Connect which connects orange strips of paper to create a chain. Project Connect joins students, schools, and communities to make a powerful statement about uniting against bullying. The Project Connect chains are showcased in the cafeteria. On Saturday, October 10th, cadets from Port St. Lucie High School participated in a car wash fundraising event at O’Reilly’s Auto Parts. The generosity of O’Reillys enabled the cadets to raise money by washing cars, all within the safety guidelines taking COVID-19 into consideration. The fundraiser was a success due to the abundance of cars the cadets were able to wash. Everything flowed smoothly as the cadets established a system of getting cars through the washing and drying stations. Oak Hammock K8 students participated in Anti-Bullying Month activities during October. Pictured are students displaying links from the Unity Chain assembled by Kindergarteners through Fourth graders. The chain represents their pledge to use kind words and UNITE as ONE to stomp out bullying.
The Career and Technical Education (CTE) department has been taking its advisory board meetings to the next level. The advisory board members include Educators from the CTE programs, business partners and post-secondary institutions (Indian River State College and Keiser University). The various groups discussed pivoting to the virtual arena for meetings as well as volunteering during the Covid19 pandemic. Level up, CTE! St. Lucie Public Schools Awarded the STOP School Violence Grant for $496,311 ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL – St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) was just awarded the STOP School Violence grant in the full amount requested, $496,311. This coveted Grant Award, follows other recently obtained, large dollar federal grants. This time, the grant award will fund the Helping Every Adolescent Recover from Trauma Project (The H.E.A.R.T. Bayshore Elementary took the time to recognize their bus drivers with a special “drive-thru breakfast!” The school wanted to take a few minutes to show their appreciation for the drivers’ hard work and dedication keeping their Bayshore students safe. Way to go!

At Mariposa Elementary, students in second grade got a chance to try out their observation skills by taking a trip to the school garden. Students used tools such as rulers and measuring tapes to measure the new sprouts. Then, they recorded their observations in their science journals. Great job Monarchs!!
The following pictures are from Mr Lewis’ 5th grade Science Class. They observed 10 changes together and had to decipher whether it was a physical or chemical change, then elaborate on what evidence they found that supports their reasoning. In the pictures, you can see students mixing glue and activator to make slime. Students discussed two liquids coming together to make a solid and identified it as a chemical change. Mrs. Schettini’s 3rd-grade class practiced their multiplication strategies outside with chalk. They drew arrays, made equal groups, skip counted and more! The weather was beautiful, and it was a perfect opportunity for some outside math fun! Engaging fun! Way to go Sharks!
