WEST Prep Class of 2021

Despite the pandemic, the WEST Prep class of 2021 took a class picture. While maintaining safe social distancing, Brick and Mortar and MySchool students were able to connect and capture a memory for their senior year.  It is more important, now more than ever, to promote social connections.

Village Green is United Against Bullying

Students at Village Green took part in Anti Bullying Week by promoting positive anti-bullying messages with a poster contest and participating in a wide range of anti-bullying programs coordinated by school counselor, Nicole Jakubiak. SLWK8 Baby Sharks Show their Vocabulary Knowledge!

This year’s St. Lucie West K-8 School’s Vocabulary Parade was better than ever! Each student was given a word from the academic vocabulary list and created a Frayer Model in the classroom in which they were able to define and use the word in a sentence correctly. Then, each student taught their classmates all about the word! Fa-boo-lous Fifth Grade Music at CAST

Fifth-graders at CAST practiced playing some spooky Halloween music during their Fine Arts classes in October. In Dr. Irwin’s music class, students played hand drums, tambourines, triangles, and claves along with the Silly Symphony Skeleton dance. In Mr. Guess’ instrumental ensemble class, students combined the guitar, keyboard, xylophone, and the Nuvo Dood in an awesome arrangement of “Monster Mash.” Boo-tiful job, Performers!

Homecoming Game Honor Guard

On Friday, October 30, 2020, the Port St. Lucie Jaguar Battalion held its first honor guard to help with the Port St. Luce High School’s homecoming game against Martin County High School. Many cadets showed up to help work the honor guard, resulting in the parking detail working to get cars where they needed to be smoothly and proficiently. Microsoft Showcase School Summit

Samuel Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies Principal, Keith W. Davis, Sr. and Instructional Coach, Michelle Powers virtually attended an international Microsoft Showcase School Summit on November 3rd and 4th. The focus for the summit was on using Microsoft technology tools and applications for enhancing educational practices and the presentation of innovating ideas that could be brought back to the different attendees’ schools.

Leader in Me Community Day

Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies was proud to be the virtual host for a Leader in Me Community Day. The event was attended by school leaders from around our state. The Live Online experience was designed to help navigate this new era of school operations. During the day, attendees learned about the phases of change, how to leverage the 7 Habits in new situations, and collaborate and innovate to find opportunity in these uncommon challenges.

SGAET American History Z-space

While studying the 13 colonies in American History class, Ms. Secrest took her eighth graders to utilize the Z-space lab. The students used the 3D technology to read maps, dissect the colonies into regions, and analyze the climate and geography, in order to predict the economic focus of the region. All of the students really enjoyed the activity, but more importantly, they were able to understand the concepts more deeply and make better predictions about each region.  

SLPS Career and Technical Education and Economic Development Council Host Counselor’s Virtual Healthcare Session

St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) partnered with the Economic Development Council (EDC) as an initiative to continue our goals of communicating employment, post-secondary, and scholarship opportunities for our graduating students in St. Lucie Public Schools.  This virtual session featured Mr. Wayne Gent (SLPS Superintendent), Mr. Pete Tesch (EDC President), CareerSource Research Coast, Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital (Martin Health), Indian River State College, Keiser University, Lawnwood Medical Center & Heart Institute (HCA), and St. Lucie Medical Center (HCA).  The participants included SLPS counselors, graduation coaches, and medical educators.    

Oak Hammock K-8 Kindergarten Students Explore Reading With Nearpod

Students in Ms. Jackson’s Kindergarten class at Oak Hammock K-8, are engaged with a Nearpod lesson with the book Lizzie Little, The Sky is Falling. After interacting with the book, students were able to test what they had learned by competing to win ‘Time to Climb’ while Ms. Jackson helped and checked their sequence questions. Students celebrated and cheered their success’s as they answered the questions while watching their character race to the finish line.

Mariposa Elementary’s Story Book Character Day

Mariposa Elementary School’s teachers and students celebrated Storybook Character Day with a parade. They showcased their favorite storybooks and dressed as their favorite characters. In the classrooms, students read their stories to each other, and enjoyed some treats. Our virtual students, Danna Sooknanan and Amiyah Kokayi participated during this special day. Mr. Logue and Ms. Patton dressed up as their favorite story book character as well. We even had Colonel Sanders (Tyler Rubenstein) come visit Mariposa with his autobiography. It was a great day for literacy fun (and dressing up!) at our school.

Learning Environment Changes for Second Semester

Requests to change from Traditional School to MySchool Online or from MySchool Online to Traditional School for the second semester can be made starting this Friday, November 13th through next Friday, November 20th. If you would like to change your child’s learning environment, please call the school directly. New schedules will go into effect for the second semester, which starts on January 4th, 2021. The last day to request a change for the second semester is November 20th. Any requests made after the window closes will be wait-listed pending availability.

SLPS Names Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year!

Superintendent Gent, joined by School Board Chairman Debbie Hawley, Board Member Troy Ingersoll and Assistant to the Superintendent Dr. Kevin Perry, made surprise visits to two SLPS schools this morning (November 10, 2020). The first stop was at C.A. Moore Elementary where they recognized Ms. Latricia Stubbs as the 2019-2020 Assistant Principal of the Year. Ms. Stubbs is now serving as a Principal at C.A. Moore Elementary. The second stop was at Allapattah Flats K8 School where they surprised Ms. Ana Rodriguez-Oronoz as the 2019-2020 Principal of the Year for SLPS! Congratulations to the two amazing administrators!

Jaguar Battalion’s First Raider Meet

On Saturday, October 24th, 2020, Port Saint Lucie High School’s Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion’s Raider Team participated in its first Raider competition of the season at Fort Pierce Central High School. Two separate Male Mixed Teams participated and competed in each of five events: Relay Race, Sprint/Drag/Carry, Rope Bridge, a PT Test and one mile of Cross-Country Rescue. Each Team member engaged in team-oriented events that required the Cadets to work proficiently and communicate with their teammates.
